So, seriously... When did Batista look in the mirror and decide he could run with the gimmick owned by Mr. Scott Simpson of Robbindale Minnesota?

Don't see the parallels?

Batista: Big, strong, limited grasp of the English language, affiliation with a strong stable in early career, sick running clostheline.

Nikita Koloff: Big, strong, limited grasp of the English language, affiliation with a strong stable in early career, , sick running clostheline.

Besides the tattoos, hair (and the fact that he uses more roids in one week than Koloff did in a year) and different onstage relationship w/ Ric Flair (Koloff was an enemy, Batista is a stablemate) They are pretty much the same guy.

Eh, just a brainfart that occured with watching Raw. But a bit eerie nonetheless...

Two hours later they decided to stop at a diner
Because they loved the smell of eggs and coffee
I just had to smoke a cigarette and wear a hat
By the time that they set off again, the sun was starting to set
It made the sky look red like a nuclear ray
One of them said "what do you want more than anything
in this whole wide world
Do you want money, do you want sex, or do you want all that success?"
I thought about that one myself
(Then they came upon the thing)

I don't know about Batista using roids...he could just be using weight gain powders...steroids might be a bit extreme...

You know, it's an understandable assumption, but in this day in age I think people should be careful about throwing around the "roid head" label. I've known guys very close to Batista's size who never took a steroid in their lives. As for the comparisons...well, it could be said of a LOT of guys who were pushed as monsters or strongmen.

Does this mean that Batista will write a crappy self-help book years from now?

Batista is about 5 times as good as Nikita ever was. Nikita made Goldberg look like Steamboat.

That is the comparison I would be making, Goldberg and Batista. Im a huge Batista mark, and I think sometime in the future they should give Batista the WCW Goldberg gimmick, and just have him start destroying everyone. That was suposed to be Kanes gimmick, but when was the last time Kane won a match that meant anything? Batista definatly has the right build for it, and I think that he could be good on his own, with like him saying that Evolution had just been holding him back.

I was gonna say ten times better. Nikita was a HORRIBLE seller, and I think Batista got much more flexibility for a guy that size. He HURLED himself out of the ring when Eugene made the save at the end of the Iron Man match, and his match with Edge was MILES better than Nikita could've had with anyone except mid-'80s Flair or Sting.

(I was a HUGE Nikita mark, too. Of course, I was also 14 with a 9-year old brother who was the perfect size for a Russian Sickle.)

Speaking of Nikita, him, or someone who was using his name showed up on a local youth orientate tele-ministry, Crossfire. Though... um he was speaking unaccented English, and I am a bit too young to know much about Koloff.

Well, like ECA said in the first post, Nikita's real name is Scott Simpson and he's from Minnesota. He's about as Russian as the Undertaker is from the afterlife.

I know he speaks often at different religious sites as a born-again Christian. A few years back he was delivering the sermons in character, claiming to rise up from a harsh life in the Ukraine. Very weird.

Koloff was a big star only because of the company he kept.

Ivan Koloff did for Nikita what Ole Anderson did for Arn. He took a young guy with some potential and developed him to continue his name in wrestling. Ole was a little better judge of talent in picking Arn.

Nikita had a good career going, until Magnum TA, The next Hulk Hogan, got into his car wreck. Nikita was a big and powerful heel, but Magnum's wreck forced him into being a face. Nikita had no other choice, but to turn face after Magnum was gone.

The face turn killed him. He was stuck with Dusty Rhodes as his partner and Flair as his enemy. The biggest problem with that at that time was, they were the two bookers and Nikita was used as a pawn.

Batista is in a much better spot, he works with the elder statesman of wrestling and the son-in-law.

Until the day that Batista throws a clothesline on Jim Ross
that makes his feet fly into the frame, Nikita will still be the better man.

Ah, David Crockett leaning into the batter's box and taking one for the team. Good times, good times.

My favorite part of that was watching it as it happened when I was a kid with one of my cousins (who was college-aged at the time) and him immediately going "KICK HIM LIKE A DOG, NIKITA!!"

If you remember David Crockett: Announcer at all, you'll know why that was funny. :P

For ages, that was my favorite old NWA memory! I had taped it because I was out playing hockey, and came back to watch it. I nearly crapped myself! Had to rewind it and see it on slow motion like 30 times. Laughing harder every time.

And yes, Mr Crockett did indeed deserve it!

I was in Tennessee last year for the UT-UGA football game. I stayed in a little town called LaFollette. Koloff was giving a sermon. He had hair and looked much smaller. From what people said who went, he spoke to his old fans after and he seemed nice.

Damn, y'all brought up some great Nikita memories. Yup, i was a total mark for him until about the age of 16 (the same time he grew hair, shrunk a bit and feuded with Flair). Not the most technically gifted, and definitely put in a bad position after Magnum TA's accident (though Magnum DEFINITELY got the sharp end of that stick!) but I still have fond memories of the guy. Then again, I'm a Dynamite Kid mark also (and by extension, Chris Benoit and Jushin Lyger) so your mileage may vary!

Hey here is a stupid question. Where any of the "Russians" from Russia? I have heard that Nikoli Volkoff was Russian but I am not sure and don't really care enough to look.

The thing was, they didn't need to turn Nikita due to Magnum's injury. Luger and Windham were close to jumping up from Florida, they easily could have slipped Windham into the role of 'I Came Here to Defend the Honor of Magnum T.A. spot' and had him feud with a heel Koloff and Flair (and actually, that is almost what they did). I still think part of the reason Crockett turned Nikita was to prevent him from jumping to the WWF as an evil Russian challenger to Hogan who could pose a credible threat. The Orndorff feud had just passed its peak, and who would have guessed Andre would face Hogan at Mania III? The Russian Nightmare burying Hogan under the Soviet flag in February of '87 could have provided Vince with a match to fill the Silverdome.

Damn that would of been pretty awesome. I was always a fan of Nikita and I remember in 98 on WCW Live they were saying stuff about him possibly coming out of retirement which would of been great...I'm an old school mark and who wouldn't of loved seeing him come back to defend the honor of WCW against The NWO.

We know it wouldn't of happened because of the politics in the back...but it's fun to imagine what if.

My favorite Nikita moment though is him at Superbrawl 1 sneaking down the ramp with the chain around his arm ready to ambush Luger when Sting shoved him out of the way and took the bullet. It was one of the few times Sting bled in the ring that I ever saw.

Nikita runs off to the back and Tony catches up with him and Nikita in his accent says "BLAH...STING WAS IN THE WRONG PLACE AT THE WRONG TIME...THATS WHAT HAPPENED TO STING"

Then Sting comes running back and they brawl to the outside of the building.

I missed out though on Crockett getting the Sickle. That has to worm it's way onto a WWE DVD some day.

No offense, but that is the most far fetched idea I have ever read. This time frame in wrestling had very few cross promotional jumps between NWA and WWF. I think the last place WWF would look for an opponent for Hulk Hogan is in the NWA, a promotion that WWF was surpassing daily. Vince back then would not have relied on Koloff's NWA bad ass persona, he would have created a new persona for him.

As for Nikita having to go good, for Magnum's sake..

Windham and Luger were well on their way, but neither were ready for the responsibility of becoming the company's top baby face (the position Magnum was in) at that time. When they came in they took the positions that fit them, seconds to a big star. Nikita had the built in story with Magnum, the only other guys that could have done it was Blanchard or Flair, and they were riding the Horseman wagon. Nikita was the right choice, but it hurt his career in the long run.
