I haven't bought this one since I really can't afford to plunk down $54.99 on a game right now, but I played it at someone else's place for a while today. A few random things...

*Pros*

Great atmosphere. Where I was, he had a 5.1 setup on his PC and they really takes advantage of it. There's always stuff "creeping around you" so to speak.

Best PC graphics ever? If not, it's darn close. I'm running a fairly high end card on a pretty fast PC (9800 Pro, 2.53 ghz P4) and it looks outstanding. I've heard other people saying that even on lower end machines it looks great.

It has a really unnerving feel to it. It's not so much that it's "scary" because there are giant monsters coming after you, it's just the fact that there is constant radio chatter coming in over your com-link where other marines are screaming for help and dying, etc. You always have a feeling that something is going to burst out of the wall or drop down from the ceiling. I noticed when I was playing it that I'd work on it for a 20-30 minutes, then have to take a break because you always feel like you're on your toes, even when it turns out there are no enemies around.

*Cons*

Gameplay nitpicks. Obviously this will vary from person to person, but I can pick up and play something like Halo or UT2k4 or a Half-Life mod and be comfortable with it pretty quickly. The Doom 3 gameplay isn't really BAD, it just seems overly simplified to me. Heck, the second mouse button is bound to jump by default, since there's no alt-fire. I couldn't even find a mouse sensitivity adjustment, so every time I looked around in game it felt really slow to me. And this may be by design, but whenever I got into a shootout with something in a dark area, I could never tell if I hit it or not. Seems scary on paper, but it's just kind of frustrating in execution.

Multiplayer. If there's one thing that shortens the Doom 3 lifespan, it'll be this. Just the most basic deathmatch-and-variant modes...there's not even a capture the flag mode. Plus you're apparently limited to 4 people on one server and there are only a few maps. Obviously the community will jump on this pretty quickly and release more maps and probably a few mods, but with UT2k4 going strong and HL2 right around the corner with both being established favorites of mod teams (yeah HL2 isn't out, but you know that people will be going mod crazy with it), I don't know how long Doom 3 will be at the forefront.

So I'd say pick it up if you've been waiting for an outstanding singleplayer FPS, which I haven't seen since Halo. Just don't expect to get 5+ years out of it through add-ons and mods like people have with the original Half-Life.

All I can say is... hot damn. Amazing game.

I'm running it on an AthlonXP 2500 at 1.9ghz, with a Radeon 9500. Visually, it's still awesome. Obviously it could be even more mind-blowing, but I'm not at all disappointed in it. Even at 80x600, it looks great. Both ATI and nVidia are reportedly working on updated graphics drivers to improve Doom 3 performance.

The atmosphere, like you said, KR, is terrific. I've got the 5.1 setup here myself, and it's terrific. It's like playing a horror movie.

The 4 to a server limit is pretty disappointing; this isn't Doom 2, after all. Who knows what the reasons were for that. Regardless, I think the point of Doom 3 was its incredible sinple-player experience.

Also, I don't think you looked very hard if you can't find the mouse sensitivity settings. It's right there in the game play menu. :)

Yeah, I saw it in the options menu. It makes no sense that they put it there instead of in the controls menu, but I'm glad it's there at least.

*Edit*

It has come to my attention that people have already figured out a workaround for the 4-player limit in online games and have knocked it up to 16. That's good news, although I'm wondering if 16 people would make it too crowded. I haven't played online that much yet so I'm not sure.

I found myself really enjoying the game more when I turned up the brightness. I am impressed with the graphics and will really be blown away when I put my computer back togather this weekend (playing on my wife's) but I am underwhelmed with the story. I guess I am spoiled by games like Far Cry, COR, Halo etc... I am actually looking forward to user made mods. I find myself enjoying mods more then the actually game lately.

The graphics are amazing (although they seem jerky on our system, but I'm looking into that), but I think that goes without saying.

I haven't played too far, but the fact that you have to choose between using a flashlight and holding a pistol at times is just EVIL!!! Plus, I miss the ability to overlay the automap and the little face of the guy looking back at you from the middle of your ui. I also miss the clear level breaks, where you would get a report of how you had performed for that stage.

It is wacky to look at the designs, and think "yeah, this looks like what I would have imagined the old Doom designs looking like if someone actually made them."

The only thing that really bothers me about the game is that with the old one, you could start a game, and immediately you had a gun and there were demons. No cut-scenes and the plot was simple enough to understand without any great explanation. (Your on Mars. Everyone else is dead. There are demons. Kill.) While I appreciate the story they are trying to tell, I think something has been lost w/o that simplicity.

Funny that we're talking about perhaps the most incredible FPS ever made, and there's nostalgia for its decade-old predecessor.

(Have you played Super Turbo Turkey Puncher Three?)

Part of the Doom 3 experience is scaring the bejeezus out of you; the old one was just about shooting two-dimensional demons. But, as I think someone has said, this is what Doom would have looked like, had they had the technology ten years ago. The game is less about the actual blowing up of things and creatures, I think, than it is about being an immersive experience. The sound, the atmosphere, the graphics... it's downright creepy playing this game in the dark.

As far as multiplayer: The more I play it, the more pleasantly surprised I am with it. They kept some of the shadows from single player in the DM maps, and I think it could stand to have even more, if only to differentiate it from UT or Quake, and retain some of that Doom feel to it.

Having played a little more of the game, I'm getting into it more. I totally agree with you that this is what the game would/should have been like, although what's wrong with missing stuff like the guys face?

The game is downright amazing though. My girlfriend can't play this game for more than 20 minutes at a time, because it gets so intense she can't handle it. IGN has a review up where they basically say that the gameplay itself isn't anything special, but the atmosphere, with the graphics and especially the sound, is just downright creepy, and makes it such a great game. I have to agree.

As for having to decide between a weapon and a flashlight, someone found some duct tape (ducttape.glenmurphy.com).

It all depends what your looking for. If you want great graphics, sound, and atmosphere, then Doom 3 is the game for you.

If your looking for something more Half-Lifeish or Haloish... this isn't the game for you.

Its a pity the duct tape was only used on the pistol and machine gun... so far.

I have seen a screenshot of Super Turbo Turkey Puncher Three.

I REALLY need to play Super Turbo Turkey Puncher Three.

Unfortunately, I have an Athlon 1300 with 384MB RAM and 98SE, so I will sit out in the hall and suck my thumb.

I haven't played it yet, since my machine can't handle it. But a couple of us were sitting on a futon watching our friend play it, and WE were getting all jittery. That sir, is a success.

And man, my friend punched turkeys for like 10min. I wonder if something else ever happens. Also, see how long you can watch the news on the tv in the cafeteria.

I don't like Doom 3 because its too dark, I hate the flashlight, and there's no alternate fire.

Lots of the Doom 3 people at gamefaqs would say this to you-

TROLL

Its dark, so what? ITS SUPPOSE TO BE. Get used to it. Either that, or get a mod.

None of the original Doom weapons had alternate fire, so seeing as how Doom 3 is escentially Doom w/ graphics on steriods, it fits.

Honestly, you should see the arguements that fanboys of D3 and other games have arguements over...

I agree, it's supposed to be. But the more I play through this game, the more weary I become of it. Just seems really repetitive to me. Just because it's "supposed to be that way" doesn't mean it was a wise gameplay decision.
