Source: Payton Traded To Celtics
The breakup of the Lakers continues. Gary Payton was dealt to Boston on Friday in a multi-player and draft picks trade, a source told ESPN.com. Rick Fox also was shipped out out of L.A., with the Lakers getting big man Chris Mihm and two others in return.

EDIT: Naturally, it took Bill Simmons about 4 seconds to write a column on it.

I get the feeling this was to get some trading chips so they can go after Jason Kidd. Even though I think Cupcake is better off building with a young team rather than have no cap space until 2010.

Of course, the Sports Guy loves Payton now.

Here's an interesting query: Will Karl Malone pick Kobe, Shaq or his couch?

The other players are Chucky Atkins and Marcus Banks and a 2nd round pick to L.A. with Boston getting in addition a lottery protected 1 and cash. Payton, Pierce and Davis? There won't be much problem with guys wanting shots. I wonder how long it will take Tommy Heinsohn to have an epiphany and change his stated opinion of Payton. The Atlantic Division is so bad this team could actually be around .500 and win the division.

They will be >.500 and win the Atlantic.

I hated to give up on Banks (I loved his defense), but they still have West, who many say is more of a "true" PG than Banks. As for Atkins, he was great as a distributor and had a great outside shot, but defensively, I think all of us who post on the Wienerboard could play better defense than him.

The Lakers pick is lotto protected next draft, top 10 the following year, top 3 the year after that, then unprotected. Plus Payton and Fox's deal come off the cap next ofseason. Who knows what that could turn into.

What the frig is Danny Ainge smoking?

Rick Fox sucked the first time he played with the Celts. Gary Payton is one of my least favorite players of all time.

I have been a Celts fan for my entire life - yes, I know that's a long time. Recently, I have just been apathetic about the Celts, but I may now have to actively dislike them.

Lakers fans must be rejoicing. Can I hear from any, please?

Fox might retire and Payton is a rental who'll probably be traded mid-season anyway. This was a total "Gimme some cap space" move.

I would be rejoicing...if we still had Derek Fisher, which we DON'T! As it is, there's no one competent playing the point guard. I mean, I hated GP as much as the next guy (he showed absolutely NO passion in the Finals), but he's better than nothing and he was the best option with Fish heading to Golden State.

Just got off the phone with a fellow Lakers fan. She's swearing off the Lakers for good. Other than Kobe, the championship dynasty has been completely dismantled.

Seriously, someone's head needs to roll for this offseason.

Well *she* needs to take note of pieman's undying love for his crappy Celtics. Just because your team loses all/most of it's stars, doesnt mean it's time to abandon ship right away. Same goes for you, Mr. "Heads-need-to-roll-for-this". The Lakers are not the Salami's (R.I.P.) Mavs or Kawshen's Knicks, signing & trading players left & right for no apparent reason. I believe the Lakers have a plan & know what they're doing.

But speaking of pieman's sorry Celtics, they sure do suck. They sucked last year too, so picking up a couple of guys who also suck* probably isnt going to make much difference anyway.

*Besides, not only are both guys in the final year of their contracts, Fox was on the verge of retirement anyway & I bet he does before the month is over.

As fas as Payton goes, I fully expect him to return to the talented player he used to be (pre-Lakers) after being freed from the confines of the evil Triangle.

And finally, wouldnt it be insanely AWESOME if the Lakers could trade all these nobodies they've picked up this summer & get Fisher back now that Payton's gone? AWESOME, I SAY!

Will someone please tell me what the hell is going on? David Stern, wiser than an owl, is having the whole fucking LEAGUE play musical chairs, just so the NBA can be a "year round" event. There is such a thing as an off season, but damned if he doesn't want NBA front and center every day...this, of course, makes it impossible to place any kind of early bet as my whole seedings and odds just got flushed down the toilet - I don't even know why I tried. I should have not even got into Bball until at least the end of August, but maybe Stern is onto something - all this action is like a good car wreck...or crack buzz

And not that I care a little about GP, but, as pieman said, wave goodbye to Beantown - if GP, by the grace of God, plays 10x as good as he did for the Lakers, Ainge will make a call to Greg Kite and BEG him to come back, just so he can bench that useless bastard Payton.

Kidd is next, and going West, which will ruin what I had booked for the Suns anyway you look at it (go ahead and start crowing JayJayDean). Kobe's about to beat the rap, Shaq is looking to get unmotivated, spending $20 million on a Miami house that I guarantee won't be used for intense "get in shape for basketball" workouts, Isaiah is schizophrenic and I just read the other day that the Mavs sent A.Walker to the HAWKS! for basically a future non-lottery pick. All of this still leaves Detroit at the top of the heap. Great. But it will be fun watching Larry Brown lose his marbles coaching the Olympic team - hopefully we all agree that it's pretty embarrassing that our PAID professionals get schooled by a bunch of Europeans who play "team" basketball. My ass. If they are serious about just giving up and fielding an "Olympic Only" team, I suggest the yahoos from Streetball. Shove the "fun" in fundamentals down their throats...

Oh yeah - I'm supposed to plug insidepulse.com. 9.8.04 (or next Monday by everyone's calendars except CRZ's.) The message board has already gone to shit, but the main site should be alright.

Kite was the epitomy of the word stiff, but at least he could throw an elbow underneath. And, compared to the legendary Stoijko Vrankovic, Kite was the second coming of Bill Walton.

I was lovin' life in the Payton/Kemp era, but sadly Payton has become the modern day Kenny Anderson and Kemp isn't even Derrick Coleman. Payton should put up good numbers as a Celtic while playing totally out of whatever system they are running. I agree that he probably won't last a whole season in Beantown which is fine, but for Christ's sake Ainge needs to settle down and find an identity for this team.

I'm starting to wonder how much Stern really knows with half the teams trading away for expiring contracts. I remember when the NBA was thought of as the ideal for franchises, but at least the NFL can cut their contracts.

This move was done mainly to get cap space after next year. Between Payton's, Fox's, and Stewart's deals coming off the books that is around $15M reduction in payroll. As for Payton, yeah he sucked in the playoffs but during the regular season he put up 14ppg and over 5 apg, which if he does that next season for the c's they will win more than most people expect.

Oh, and DJ...if you thought Payton's defense was bad, wait till you get a look at Atkins.

Huh? If Payton plays BETTER than he did in LA, that will make Ainge upset? I'm confused.

Kidd is next, and going West, which will ruin what I had booked for the Suns anyway you look at it (go ahead and start crowing JayJayDean).

I would NEVER do THAT.

Kobe's about to beat the rap, Shaq is looking to get unmotivated, spending $20 million on a Miami house that I guarantee won't be used for intense "get in shape for basketball" workouts

You may be right about the Shaq in, say 2006, but in '04-'05 I'd lay the big money on a lean(er), mean Diesel ready to shove it up the Lakers' and everyone's ass. He's got to be in shape early because on Christmas Day he has to go to staples and drop 40-20 on the "new-look" Lakers.

But it will be fun watching Larry Brown lose his marbles coaching the Olympic team - hopefully we all agree that it's pretty embarrassing that our PAID professionals get schooled by a bunch of Europeans who play "team" basketball. My ass.

Looks like GP is a tad upset at ol' Cupcake.

http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/page2/story?page=simmons/morecowbell/040810

One more NBA note: There's a reason you haven't seen the "Gary Payton is joining the Celtics!" press conference yet. It's because he hasn't decided if "Gary Payton is joining the Celtics!" yet. He's still furious about the trade -- not about playing in Boston, but at Mitch Kupchak for lying to him (that he would retire as a Laker) and not telling him about the deal ahead of time. (He found out from a media member.) Apparently, GP just moved his family from Seattle to Los Angeles this summer and planned on setting up shop there, even enrolling his oldest daughter in an L.A. school. Now his life has been turned upside down.

Anyway, the Celtics have been actively working on backup deals in case A.) GP decides to retire, or B.) GP refuses to accept the trade. Nobody sees him walking away from a guaranteed $5.5 million, and the Celtics front office certainly isn't budging on this. They also have Paul Pierce and Doc Rivers lobbying him heavily behind the scenes. But just in case, they're sniffing around. So stay tuned. Could be an interesting week.

There seems to something going on after all. Wyc Grousbeck, one of the C's owners was on 1510 The Zone in Boston around 4 PM ET. He said that there was going to be a "Tweak" in the Payton trade and that they might be close to signing a FA over the weekend.

Later on this afternoon, Bill Simmons posted this info on the SOSH board. Scroll down to his 2nd message, his name there is "sptguy33".

Over on the c's ESPN board, supposedly what Simmons posted was confirmed on 1510 not long after. What the "tweak" was is the C's get Banks and their 2nd rounder back and send Jumaine Jones to LA instead.

If this is all true, the trade ends up as....

C's get: Payton, Fox, protected #1
Lakers get: Mihm, Atkins, Jones

And if it is true, LA is now home to the 2 worst GM's in the NBA; Elgin and Cupcake.

EDIT: Celtic's website confirms it.

Seems like this trade is looking a whole lot better to Celtics fans now; geez, the Lakers really got screwed over here ...

Couple in the fact that the C's are ready to announce the signing of a big man free agent (even if it is "only" someone like Rebraca or Googs, but still) AND this clears the way for another blockbuster trade (now that Banks is back, perhaps the Cs will see fit to grant Payton's wish and send him back West in a deal for Abdur-Rahim) and things could get very interesting next season in Boston ...

Bah... if Payton never shows up, and Rick Fox retires, the Celtics basically gave away three guys for a future first-round draft pick.

Mihm was a restricted free agent who probably wasn't going to stay in Boston after they gave Blount 7 years/$41 million.
Atkins was someone they made available in the expansion draft because he had 2 years/$8 million left on his deal, and he screwed up the franchise by providing a spark that kept them from tanking and going into the lottery last season.
And Jumaine Jones was below the ballboy on the depth chart, so losing him won't cause anyone to miss a moment of sleep.
Thus, if Payton doesn't show, they get a first round pick, pick up money, and don't lose anyone of long term value.

Exactly RSN. although by what some are saying about the draft picks the c's got this year, they didn't need to go into the lottery to get some good players.

Mihm at best might be the next Greg Ostertag.

Atkins was a decent PG. After the Lakers fans watch him play defense though, they'll be wishing they still had Payton.

Jumaine Jones is what? The 6th or 7th SF on LA's roster now?

I think if Eke could get rid of Croshere and Anthony Johnson for cap space and a future #1 he'd do it.
