Just heard the Marlins/Dodgers deal on SportsCenter. The dilly:
Marlins get: P Guillermo Mota, OF Juan Encarnacion, C Paul Lo Duca
Dodgers get: P Brad Penny, 1B Hee-Seop Choi, P Bill Murphy
A Marlins fan's thoughts: Tough seeing Penny leave- one of our most consistent starters all year and now it leaves a hole in the rotation (possibly two if Beckett doesn't come back healthy). Of course, we wouldn't be able to sign him and Pavano in the off-season, so now we don't have to make that decision. I was never a big fan of Choi- not a fan of players who strike out a lot, but I'm not sure Conine (who'll move from LF to 1B) is that much of an upgrade. Murphy was a prospect, of which we have few all of a sudden.
The Marlins were DESPERATE for middle relief, and they got a good one in Mota. They had Encarnacion last year and he's a huge upgrade defensively in right over Cabrera. His offense seems to have dropped off this year. Lo Duca is an upgrade at the catcher position, but he has no power, which will hurt.
Overall: I'm not sure what to think yet....I'm just glad it wasn't Ishii instead of Enc or Mota, as had been rumored.

The rumor is the Dodgers made this deal to get either Randy Johnson or Steve Finley. This deal makes absolutely no sense for the Dodgers without getting either player from the D'backs. If the Dodgers don't get one of them, they are dead.

And the rumor is the Marlins are going to use Encarnacion to get Walker from the Rockies.

He has hit 6 HR and 20 RBI in the last month and hit 25 HR in the 2001 season. He's not exactly a slugging machine, but he's a billion percent better than Redmond.

I looked up his homers and he has 9 this year. For some reason, (maybe last year's HR numbers which I'm too lazy to look up?) I thought he was a singles guy. Maybe I got him and Kendall mixed up.

This trade has already helped my NL-Only team where I'm chasing down TheCow, Encarnacion getting dealt to the Rockies would only help that effort even more.
//edit: The Dodgers had better get RJ out of this, they could have had Beltran earlier in the year had they been willing to trade Mota.
ESPN just reported that the Dodgers will not get Randy Johnson. LA wouldn't part with the players AZ wanted. The Backs wanted Penny plus either Chad Billingsley or Chuck Tiffany, two of the Dodgers top pitching prospects, and other prosepcts. It looks like they may get Finley though.

Looks like the Marlins just traded for starting pitcher Ismael Valdez from the Padres and relief pitcher Rudy Seanez from the Royals, only giving up a minor-league pitcher and benchwarming outfielder Abraham Nuņez. I'm gonna miss Penny and Choi, but I LOVE how management has filled all our major holes and shown the community we're still out to win.
Yo, it's me, it's me, it's (points to self) P-A-B!
Is there any way we can get Randy through a waivers deal?

The city of San Diego, it's fans, and the Padres.
First, even if he is put on waivers, Johnson still has the no trade clause in effect. Second, to get to the Padres, Johnson would have to pass by all N.L. teams with a worse record than the Padres. Its a safe bet that a Giants or Mets or Phillies or even Cubs would put in a claim on Johnson in order to block. Padres hit the skids, they could drop behind a few of those teams in order to jump them in waiver claim order, but that would only make them less attractive to Johnson in order to waive his no trade. Third, will Padres management commit $16 million to a pitcher for another over 40 pitcher for next season?

Because the context of the joke has ALWAYS been around the team itself, not anything outside of it.
"We" has always indicated the team in any context I've ever heard it. If you're not on that team, then the "we" reference doesn't work. It sounds self-centered and over-aggrandizing.

I'll agree there. I especially like how we didn't throw away our farm system this year (only Murphy gone). However, if we don't make the playoffs, it could be a messy offseason. Will Lo Duca and Encarnacion stay around?
I'm scratching my head on your pickup of Valdez. Sure, he's 9-5, but he won most of those games much earlier in the season, and his arm is gone.
He's also old.
I just don't see how anyone thinks this is the final piece for their team.
//edit: And his era is over 5 at this point

The way the Marlins schedule is, they only really need a 5th starter 5 or 6 more times, and if they make the playoffs, he won't be on the roster. They just needed a body to make it through 5 or 6 games. The guys the Marlins have used to replace Beckett when he was injured were AWFUL, many times not being able to get out of the 3 or 4th inning. As long as Valdes keeps the Fish in the games, that's all they're looking for. Plus, it didn't cost them much.
