Clippers decline to match Suns' offer for Richardson (sports.espn.go.com)

Yeah, I know, who saw that one coming? Q's now going to the Suns - 6 years, $42.6 million.

His replacement? Kerry Kittles.

Crazy. Clippers GM Elgin Baylow was on ESPN Radio here in Los Angeles today. I was only half paying attention, but I heard him defend the choice of Kittles over Quentin by saying something about Kittles being "such an awesome defensive weapon". I guess. Kittles isnt getting any younger, and from what I saw, Richardson had nowhere to go but up (and was well on his way getting there).

The hosts asked Baylor about the Clippers' history of drafting & signing hot young players, then when their contracts run out, getting rid of them/letting them go instead of resigning them and trying to build up the team. I missed what he said in response. I wish I hadnt, but the guy I was talking to on the phone wouldnt shut-up.

Meanwhile, it looks like the Suns are really getting their ish together.

Kittles only cost the Clips a 2nd round draft choice next year and I believe he is the final year of his $10.3M contract - guess the Clips are positioning themselves for next year's free agents already.

Aren't they ALWAYS positioning themselves for next year's free agents?

Yeah, the Clippers are always clearing cap space to sign players who don't want anything to do with 'em.

I think that Clippers redefine the axiom "Wait 'til next year" myself. It's one thing when your fans say that, but to make this a policy of business? Do they even sell season tickets?

The worst part is that "next year" never comes.

That's why I love the Clippers, because they don't dissuade the notion that ANYONE could be an NBA General Manager.

DJ FROSTY: Meanwhile, it looks like the Suns are really getting their ish together.

You got that right. Including the pickup of Nash, I like the Suns as good as anyone in the West now that Shaq is gone. If it would boil down T'Wolves v. Suns, I'm taking the Suns - Cotton croaked at the right time to influence the "win one for him!" motivation.

Speaking of which, I might as well announce that I am switching my allegiance from Magic to Heat this year, and at least until Shaq retires. Hey, it's Shaq and I want to see him beat the hell out of people...I just hope he is motivated. Besides, I'm moving further south this weekend and will no longer have the Orlando crowd to make me care about "rebuilding"...

Hey Frosty - your Avatar - it appears to be afoul. Just in case you ain't noticed

You mean that "as a fan" and not "to win the West", right? Unless the Suns get a big man they'll just be a better version of the Sonics.

I'm talking betting. Barring injuries to all parties, T'wolves walk easily, with the Suns probably two seed, maybe three. As good as Duncan is, he can't carry that team without everyone else playing like God, but they will most likely give everyone a run for their money until the playoffs start.

"Big Man" is out like a light in the West. Garnett, of course. But from there...Duncan needs help, Vlade is old, Camby is overrated, Mavs have that Russian kid who can't play a little, Yao is tough, but you have to take the odds that he and T'Mac ain't going to get along....Portland sucks and Ostertag has always been suspicious. So that leaves the Suns and T'wolves. I just realized if Shaq doesn't destroy, Detroit wins again. All respect to the Pistons, but I would rather watch the grass grow.

You are INSANE.

The Suns won TWENTY-NINE games last year, add Nash and Q and they're suddenly going to win the Pacific?! Over the Lakers?! I hate Kobe as much as anyone, but with all the talk about Shaq-this and Shaq-that, and with Odom, Grant, and Butler (who would've been the 3rd-5th best Lakers had they been on last year's team) you're telling me that Kobe's not going to come out blazing next year? The Suns have NO BIGS, except Amare, and he can't do it by himself. They're going to be a running, gunning team that will beat you if they shoot the lights out but have very little interior presence and rebounding, just like the Sonics.

Look at the West:

Spurs: Add Brent Barry, lose Hedo Turkoglu = BETTER
Jazz: Add Boozer, Okur, lose Ostertag = BETTER
Nuggets: Add Kenyon Martin = BETTER
Rockets: Add T-Mac and Juwan Howard, lose Francis and Mobley = BETTER
Hornets: Add noboby, lose nobody + change conference = SAME
T-Wolves: Add nobody, lost nobody = SAME
Lakers: Lose Shaq, add Grant, Butler, Odom = WORSE BUT NOT HORRIBLE
Kings: Lose Vlade, add Ostertag and a healthy C-Webb (?) = SLIGHTLY WORSE
Mavs: Add Stackhouse, lose Nash and Jamison = WORSE BUT NOT HORRIBLE
Grizzlies: Add Brian Cardinal, lose nobody = SAME

ALL of those teams had AT LEAST FORTY wins last year, and the Suns are suddenly leapfrogging all of them except Minnesota, with quite a few of them having improved significantly?

I see the Suns where the Jazz were last year at BEST, going for about 40 wins, keeping it interesting playoffs-wise until the last couple of weeks then missing them.

Yeah, that what I'm going for...and to save Cubs and F'N Shaprio some time, I'll discuss more in PM or AIM, the latter preferably.
