Looks like Cena is throwing his hat into the acting ring as well ...

Cena has a military background, right? He could probably pull off the role convincingly, and he's certainly got the charisma.

Problem is, I highly doubt the script or the direction will be anything more than staple action movie nonsense, so look for this gem in your video store one month after it makes no impact theatrically...

I'm not expecting the next Thin Red Line here, but I don't have faith in Vinnie Mac lining up any real talent when he thinks the WWE marketing machine can pull the weight. Just like they did for that Smackdown Records band, Neurotica, which got outsold by Fozzy by a factor of 3!

And what a great idea it is to take one of your biggest draws out of action for a few months. And how does this sit with Hunter now that his movie vehicle has been dropped? Or postponed?

Aren't WWE Films just basically releasing movies into the straight to video market? I think that was the plan based on information I seem to remember reading at some point. Of course, I have nothing to back this up other than my feeble memory, so I could be wrong there.

Nevertheless, with Cena starring and the movie titled "The Marine", I think they'll have a large gay following with this movie just from people renting it thinking it's a gay porn.

LOL ...

I think Vince is trying too hard to find someone to duplicate the success of the Rock ... Cena might do well, but I see this being rushed to DVD after a horrible 2 week run in theaters.

With its probable short life on the screen, we'll all be left to say ... I can't see him *waves hand in front of face*.

Sounds like another "Assault on Devil's Mountain." Might be nice if they hire Jesse Ventura to work with him.

John Cena has acting experience. In 2001 he was in a short-lived TV series called Manhunt for UPN. This new role shouldn't be too much of a stretch from what he's used to.

His work on that show barely meets the defintion of acting.

$15 million (as mentioned in the article) is low budget, but maybe not an unreasonable amount to make back? That's before the money they spend on hype.

I'd guess this means the Triple H picture is being pushed back? There doesn't seem to be much of a window unless they were to have their first two films filming at the same time.

Nope.

John's had some acting experience besides "Manhunt". Mostly in short films. One was essentially a precursor to "Punk'd" where he was portraying an a wrestling trainer pranking somebody, and scaring the hell out of them.

Almost, he was playing a roided up actor, freaking out people auditioning for the part opposite him in a B Film

Obviously, somebody remembers it better than I. Hell, last time I saw it, John still wrestled here regularly.

Shouldn't McMahon wait to see if Rock can continue to be taken seriously as an actor before he starts throwing money at dumb B or C-level action movies that make the average Brian Bosworth flick look like Citizen Kane? Rock's last couple movies haven't really done all that much, and aside from a respectable showing in The Scorpion King (I don't take The Mummy 2 seriously since he's basically got a cameo in it), he really hasn't proven himself to be a big Hollywood draw.

Even if WWE does go with a movie vehicle for a wrestler, they should just say "screw it" and throw Booker T and Shawn Michaels in one of those formulaic buddy-cop movies where we find out once again that yes, a mild-mannered African-American cop and a wide-eyed-party-boy Caucasian can make quite the crimefighting duo.

If the WWE wants to branch out into films and sell its performers as viable film stars, why not just commission an ensemble story, populate the entire film with wrestlers and show that film to agents and producers? Kill two birds with one stone. Also you get to create a resume for everyone involved, allowing to claim some film credit and experience. They travel the world every year; imagine the settings they could use for a global mystery/action picture. "Tales of the Golden Monkey Flip!"

I think a film version of "Rob and Lance Are Friends: Chasing the Jade Gopher" would break all kinds of records.

Wow! Talk about a heat machine! I've never seen a film get so many negative reviews before it was filmed, scripted, or even casted beyond its star!

Facts:
-the movie is planned to be released into theatres with 20th Century Fox handling marketing & distribution.
-Bonito's work is highly-tauted.
-Bonito has plenty of A-level experience in production.
-A director doesn't have to be known to the general public in order to be good.
-Directing commercials/music videos often pays comparitively to directing feature films, which is why many directors work exclusively in commercials now.
-The WWE won't be the only company involved during the film's production, as is the case with most feature films.

And in case anyone wants to scoff at Bonito being a director of commercials, that's how most of today's best directors and producers got their start. Nobody had heard of Guy Ritchie, McG, Brett Ratner, Spike Jonze, or Michael Bay before they started directing large-scale movies.

I guess what I'm saying is there seems to be a blanket-stereotyping of this project already, without reason. Educate yourself before saying something foolish, that's all. Unless you've read the script (which hasn't been written at this point), in which case, please give us the low-down. Otherwise, I don't see how anyone can say this project will suck... until I see a headline saying Hogan has been cast as a villain. ;P

With a budget of $15 million, one thing looks very likely: the WWE should profit quite a bit after all the write-offs.

My own opinion so far is that it looks like a smart move by the WWE to push this as their first feature film, as opposed to the HHH and Kane movies. I also see more potential in Cena's acting abilities than most other superstars. Hopefully, the script will turn out strong...but only time will tell.

p.s. Any hope of a "Movies" section opening on the W?

What do you mean he is not a full-time wrestler? He wrestles about every week on Raw or at least is there. I'd say he wrestles more than the average champion does. I know he wrestles some house shows too..
