I'm sure most of you have heard this news already, but for those who haven't: http://www.aintitcool.com/display.cgi?id=17971

A light comedy in the style of The Mask?? Now, I've never really been a huge comics or Green Lantern mark, but how hasn't DC learned how to do a comic book movie? How haven't they learned from Spiderman and X-Men about how fans want these movies to be made?

Like I said, I'm not a huge mark for comics or the Green Lantern, but I know about comic books and the history of comic book characters and the Green Lantern. If they were going for a "light hearted comedy like The Mask", why does it have to be The Green Lantern? Make it completely different. Why attach a loved comic book character with this project.

A Jack Black comedy where he gets mysterious magical/super powers from a magic ring could sell itself without the Green Lantern name attached. But a Jack Black comedy labelled as The Green Lantern will just turn people away.

Ok, this is why Marvel rules and DC sucks. So what you want about Daredevil, Hulk and Punisher, but at least they never totally changed a character's origin. Man, this reeks of bad.

When you look at CINO and Constantine, its obvious that WB has learned nothing. There is no guy from DC comics overseeing all the adaptations of their properties like Avi Arad. WB owns DC, so they have no creative say in what gets put on screen.

If this is true and I hope it isn't, why not just make a second sequel to the mask since that's what they want it to be? This is not Green Lantern. And if Jack Black does this, then fuck him. He should go ahead and play G'nort instead of Hal Jordan, Alan Scott, Guy Gardener, John Stewart, or even Kyle Rayner. This is the kind of crap that made comic book movies bad and unwatchable in the first place. If Jack Black has any remote amount of respect for Green Lantern, he will not do this movie.

Who said Black has any respect for Green Lantern? Maybe he doesn't even know who Green Lantern is. If he liked the script and the payday, I see no reason to hold him accountable for Warner Brothers ruining another potentially blockbuster DC property.

Anyone care to put a positive spin on this like for the Fantastic Four movie?

'kay!

A guy who makes shapes out of energy with a magical ring and has a horrible, debilitating allergy to the color yellow has plenty of comedy potential, and Jack Black can be really funny.

I'd rather see a Green Lantern movie with a lighter tone and a good combination of story/effects than none at all, and I honestly can't see too many people getting excited about a movie based on, say, something similar to the Justice League cartoon incarnation of the character. It'd most likely wind up being a disappointment on the level of Daredevil - not interesting enough to really make non-comic fans care, not canon enough to satisfy the geeks.

Well you can continue to think that. And Hollywood will continue to make abominations like Catwoman and Constantine. I think this could very well be worse than Catwoman considering that Green Lantern is a character I actually care about. That DC comics is seriously upset about this prospect should send a message to at least some people.

Here's what Green Lantern is all about:

In brightest day,
In darkest night,
No Evil shall escape my sight.
All those who worship evil's might,
Beware my power,
GREEN LANTERN'S LIGHT!

Or it could be "Super Fuzz" with an eight-figure budget. (Actually, I'd go see that.)

Dear WB:

Please adapt Emerald Dawn, Emerald Twilight and Final Night and rewrite them (especially Final Night) as Green Lantern stories.

And please cast the kid from Clockstoppers as Kyle Rayner.

That is all.

Love,

Ryan

P.S. Identity Crisis rules.

Let's see. Marvel, in recent years, has had outstanding adaptions of some of their books, such as Spider-Man 1 & 2, X-Men 1 & 2, and Blade 1 & 2. Even some of their lesser films (Daredevil, Hulk, Punisher) are still enjoyable, especially to fans of the particular character.

DC this month shows up with the godawful-looking Catwoman, totally throwing away the Batman portion of her story (which wouldn't necessarily be bad if they made a decent film), and now this Jack Black bullshit.

I admit I'm partial to Marvel's stuff anyway, but I really hope the DC side can get it together for the upcoming Superman and Batman movies.

Superman is apparantly the ONE THING DC & Warner are agreed upon: It HAS to be good. Christopher Nolan only signed on to do Batman Begins with the caveat that he gets reasonably complete creative control and stays within the budget. That's why it'll work. For Superman, they need to get 3 things: A good story, a good actor, and a good director. And DC & Warner need to decide just how tied into Smallville the movie will be, because if they manage to do a clever enough tie-in...the ratings and the box office will be HUGE.

This is the kind of hypersensitivity that gives both movie AND comic geeks a bad name. The film's not being made exclusively for you. Get over it. And as for this being "the kind of crap that made comic book movies bad and unwatchable in the first place"? Gimme a break. That title belongs to Superman IV and Batman And Robin, two films that DC didn't seem to get all riled up about at the time.

"But a Jack Black comedy labelled as The Green Lantern will just turn people away."

Err....why? You make a straight adaptation of a comic that, whether the fans like it or not, is barely a blip on the radar for mainstream viewers, and you have a likely-costly bomb on your hands thanks to mass unfamiliarity with the source material. You pep it up, make it more comedic, throw in the hot new thing of Jack Black and sell it as something different from the tens of superhero movies already cluttering the landscape, and there's a good chance that the millions and millions of people who DON'T read the comics will give it a look.

"And Hollywood will continue to make abominations like Catwoman and Constantine."

Catwoman I'll grant you, but Constantine is, according to Big Harry's spies, turning out to be surprisingly not bad. I mean, I'm sure there are going to be thousands of little faults for obsessives to work themselve sinto a frenzy about, but I repeat: THESE MOVIES ARE NOT MADE JUST FOR YOU.

"For Superman, they need to get 3 things: A good story, a good actor, and a good director. And DC & Warner need to decide just how tied into Smallville the movie will be, because if they manage to do a clever enough tie-in...the ratings and the box office will be HUGE."

Gaaaaah no no no. Tying in a TV program which a large portion of the movie-going public may not watch is a TERRIBLE idea for a franchise with this kind of name value. I fail to see how making clever connections to what amounts to a cult TV show would get huge box office. I mean, I'm sure it would satisfy fans of the series, but a)They don't number *that* many in the States, and b)Smallville ain't actually shown in many countries, and where it is (ie. here) it's not even looked up as hit cult TV. Making movies-especially one which will end up as costly as this-for a minority audience is a bad bad bad idea. That's why comic book flicks are such a Catch 22. The built-in audience is there, but you *can't* just cater to them because you'll ruin the accessibility of the project under so much insider bullcrap.

Once upon a time in China, some believe, around the year one double-ought three, head priest of the White Lotus Clan, Pai Mei was walking down the road, contemplating whatever it is that a man of Pai Mei's infinite power contemplates - which is another way of saying "who knows" - when a Shaolin monk appeared, traveling in the opposite direction. As the monk and the priest crossed paths, Pai Mei, in a practically unfathomable display of generosity, gave the monk the slightest of nods. The nod was not returned. Now was it the intention of the Shaolin monk to insult Pai Mei or did he just fail to see the generous social gesture? The motives of the monk remain unknown. What is known, are the consequences. The next morning Pai Mei appeared at the Shaolin Temple and demanded of the Temple's head abbot that he offer Pai Mei his neck to repay the insult. The Abbot at first tried to console Pai Mei, only to find Pai Mei was inconsolable. So began the massacre of the Shaolin Temple and all 60 of the monks inside at the fists of the White Lotus. And so began the legend of Pai Mei's five point palm exploding heart technique.

After your post, I'm simply gonna say this:

Ask the average person who the heck comics are about, and usually you'll get some (or all) of Batman, Superman, Spider-Man & Captain America. Maybe the X-Men, too, but they've just gotten popular (compared to the others).

Most other comic properties you need to sell to a wide audience, and sometimes that means changing it to make it more marketable.

(edited by oldschoolhero on 17.7.04 0020)

I'm going to tell you right now oldschoolhero. A "zany comedy" version of Green Lantern starring Jack Black as Kyle Rayner will be the equivalent to CINO, Superman IV, and Batman and Robin.

Look at this way. Look at the GOOD comic book or superhero movies. The reason they are GOOD films at all is because they treat their source material with RESPECT and they take the themes, subjects, and characters SERIOUSLY! This started happening with movies like Blade, X-men, then the Spider-man films. Batman Begins looks like its moving in a similar direction. Catwoman totally craps on its source material and characters turning it into this grotesque bloated piece of Hollywood shit. I mean its not just that the movie totally disrespects its origins, it looks god awful as well.

Harry and his spies can spew all the bullsh!t they want about Constantine, but it will still be a disaster. Keanu Reeves is a bad actor, and if there is one person you would never want to play John Constantine, The Hellblazer, its Keanu. Note this dialogue for the teaser:

"I don't believe in the devil."

"Well you should...he believes in you!"

Ok, well you kind of had to see it, but it was really lame and stupid and very Non-Constantinian. If it was Constantine, he would've told Rachel Weisz to piss off.

Look at other things. King Arthur. King Arthur sucked and tanked at the box office because they tried to make a popular legend and mythological tale into some sorry excuse for a history lesson. They tried to make the story of Arthur, something it wasn't. Green Lantern isn't supposed to be a zany comedy, though I suppose you can argue how stupid, valid, or cheesy the original concept is. And again, DC IS riled up about this if you say they weren't about Batman and Robin or SIV, so that tells me this is bad news.

Or rather than that, how about a take on the Kyle Raynor GL - that being, a struggling artist who's not nearly as responsible as he should be suddenly has this ring dropped into his lap. The ring is the most powerful tool in the universe, and is able to make all his artistic visions come true. Then, powerful people start coming after him for the ring, viewing it as the most powerful weapon in the universe. Also, people start popping up in Kyle's life that can only be helped by his use of the ring - people Kyle never would've noticed before. Kyle slowly starts realizing the scope of this ring and that, just maybe, he's not just a struggling artist anymore.

You'd have to do a good part of the movie as CGI for the full effects for the ring, but I think you could do a serious take on it with a story that people would care about.

As of a Jack Black fan as I am, this idea really turns my stomach. I'm not what you call a "comic book guru", but the Super Friends/Super Powers were my fave as a kid, both the show & the action figures (well, next to my massive Star Wars toy collection, but anyway). And for some reason, Green Lantern was my favorite.

I wanna see a kick ass Hollywood actor portray the Hal Jordan Green Lantern ...
