Is anyone else in the world as sick as I am of first person shooters? There are more of these now than there are of any genre combined. The last game I got was Painkiller, and that rocks! The thing is I go into my local Gamestop or EB and I hate all the FPS's I see there.
I'm not even excited anymore over when I play them because it's the most played out genre there is. I plan on getting Doom 3 and Half Life 2, and that's it until another Unreal or something. After these two come out, there shouldn't be any new FPS's for a few months.
The only game coming out that I'm excited to play is MGS3 : SE.
Developers need to make new games, not just another bland FPS (I'M NOT CALLING DOOM OR HALF-LIFE BLAND, I'M JUST STATING IN GENERAL).
P.S. Halo 2 is not included because I don't own an X-Box.
It's no big deal to me. It was the same thing this time 10 years ago with 2D fighting games...you buy the two or three good ones and don't give the rest a second thought. It's just the hot thing, it won't last forever.
I kind of suspect HL2/Doom 3/Halo 2 are "blowing the load" for FPS games...I don't really see many coming out after that that are noteworthy anytime soon.
Tribes 2 is a free stragety FPS. Tribes 3 is coming out soon, so sierra released this 3 year old game for free. It takes a good team to do any CTF's or Assults. Unlike Doom/Quake/UT, you can't go in like a One Man Gang. There are turrets that will eat you up unless someone in a vehicle runs you over or does a fly by.
Think a old version of UT2004's Onslaught mode.
Hey, it's free, so give it a shot. It doesn't have the fanciest graphics, but it has solid gameplay.
Having said that, I can't wait for The Matrix Online. It will be my first MMORPG.
I figured the MMOs have ruled the gaming world. I know people that are STILL playing Eversuck. Since day one. I haven't touched Doom, Quake, or Unreal 1 in YEARS (but I do have UT 2003)

People don't play Doom and Quake because they are near/over 10 years old. Hell, it's questionable if they would even run on an XP machine without some config-knowhow. Everquest is from 1999. A more fair comparison would be Half-Life/CS, which are "old FPS games" that a ton of people still play.

All the sites that have the full Tribes 2 download that i've visited said that access to download them had been closed. You know where I can actually DOWNLOAD one?
The gaming industry in general wavers. It has its ups and downs. Dont worry about there being bad FPS's as you say. Its all part of the cycle. Some good looking ones (Halo 2, Half-Life 2, Doom 3, F.E.A.R., I could go on and name 3-4 more) are coming up. Of course, hype isnt everything...

Doom Legacy is your friend. Although I'm not sure if Quake'll run well. Wolfenstein 3D even has a port for XP, although it's not so good.

Then why even waste time going on a tirade against FPS games? It seems like you're not even interested in puzzle, fighter, simulation, sports, RPG, or educational games seeing as how MGS3 is the ONLY game you're excited about; why single out the FPS's?

I love all types of games, it's just that there are too many FPS's. I can name a ton of games I want (Metal Gear is the most, though), and all of them don't have to be FPS's (but because there are so many, it's really hard to pick the others).
You want online fighitng games? Get the new Dead or Alive Ultimate when it comes out. Your wish will be granted. Its basically all the Dead or Alive games w/multiplayer capibility.
I actually see the large ammount of FPS games as a very good thing. Competition can only keep the best FPS games on their toes and improving, if everybody wasnt trying to outdo every other competing product on the market we would be playing a DOOM 3 that would not look or be much better from the first installment, see what I mean?
With competitors always trying to outdo each other advancement is a sure thing; all you have to do is buy the games you personally like and ignore the rest of the crappy ripoffs.

Good point. They want more money, so in turn, try to create a better product than their competitors. Just cause there are lots of FPS games in the market (and in development) doesnt mean they're all crap.
