Brett, since you are in such a giving mood lately, such as just giving the sacks record to Strahan, I would like to inform you that should you meet the Bears again, there are some records that the Bears are interested in.

For example, if you could just lay down so that the Bears could break a team record for most sacks in a game, that would be great. And how about giving Urlacher the individual award. And what about interception records?! If you could throw some balls in Mike Brown's or Walt Harris's direction, you could become a very popular man in Chicago. But we are not selfish. So while you are it, break a record for yourself. Hey, the most fumbles in a game record hasn't been threaten in a while, so that would be a good one for you!

It could hurt your integrity, but as you showed Sunday, you are not too worried about integrity anyway.

Best of luck to you against San Francisco.

Not any more so than just giving away a sack.

I don't see the difference between Bret Favre letting Strahan get the sack and a team like Tampa not playing it's starters last night against Philly. In both cases, the givers (Tampa Bay, Favre) had nothing left to play for (Green Bay had the game locked up at that point), so what is the harm? I guess the Eagles' win Sunday night should be taken away because the Bucs didn't play most of their starters?

I don't think that is quite the same. I wouldn't have had a problem if Green Bay had pulled its starters, and therefore Strahan was able to get a sack on them. At least he still would have had players trying to prevent him from getting it, so the sack would have been earned in a competitive environment (such as the Eagles/Bucs game, that game was still won in a competitive environment, the Bucs on the field were not letting the Eagles win).

It would be no different than had at the point Walter Payton needed just 3 yards to break the all-time rushing record, the defense just went over to the sidelines and allowed Walter to bust a long run against no one for a touchdown.

Besides, Strahan had time. Who's to say he wouldn't have gotten the sack anyway. Now, we will never know. Walter didn't need ANY help to get his record, nor would he have wanted any.

I dunno, it looked to me like Favre saw it coming, knew he would get demolished if he stayed up, so he just started to go down for the guy to make it easier on both of them.

It's like when a guy is caught in a run-down in baseball... if he knows he's out, you know he's out, EVERYONE knows he's out, why be a dick and possibly hurt someone, just take the easy tag.

No harm no foul. He would have had the sack, Favre didnt get hurt. What's to dislike? A sack merely means QB caught for a loss of yards - it doesn't need the guy to be demolished for it to count.

I don't mind it at all.

First off, the play looked (at least to me) like a half-broken play; it might have originally intended to be a run. If that was the case, then he knew Strahan was probably going to get to him anyway; why risk injury?

It really strikes me as somewhat of a shame that anytime a record is broken, we almost automatically assume that it wasn't gotten a fair way. Everybody can screw up at any given point. He could've slipped, for all we know.

I haven't seen the play, I'm just going by press accounts (which admittedly, is probably a mistake). If it was a broken play, the media should have reported as such. My understanding was that Farve audibled to a naked boot-leg (which is a pretty questionable thing to do unless it was short-yardage), and then made a half-assed effort, fell, and allowed Strahan to touch him down.

There may not be so much suspicion if Farve hadn't said before the game that 'he might just give him the sack'.

Now what was written was he gave Strahan the sack. If he didn't intentionally call a naked boot-leg to Stranhan's side, instead there was a broken play, and he did just go down to avoid a hit, then that is not an illegitmate sack as everyone is reporting.

No, I only have a problem if the play was called with the intended pre-determined result of a sack for Strahan. If that was not intended, then it doesn't matter if Farve went down to avoid a hit. Quarterbacks slide all the time to avoid hits (Farve usually doesn't, but they didn't need a big play as much as him staying healthy at that point of the game).

Well, I didn't watch the game.. I had to be at a 1 year olds first birthday party. I saw the reply on the news when they were discussing the record, and they didn't come right out and report it as a gimme play.

If he audibled it then its more shady than I was making it out to be. From the 10 second clip I saw it didnt look that bad, but maybe in context it was worse.

Seeing the replay a few times, I can understand why they would claim it was just set up. However, instinct tells me it wasn't that way. If anything, Strahan might've just blown past the tight end and was headed straight for Farve, so he decided to avoid an easy hit and just took it.

Just keep in mind the media seems to enjoy conspiracy theories almost as much as they do run-ins with the law.

The only thing that strikes me as odd is that no one else on the Packers heard the audible that Brett claimed he did at the line of scrimmage. Bubba Franks went into run block mode at the snap of the ball. The whole offensive line started to drive forward upon the ball snap instead of dropping back for any sort of pocket or pulling to the side for the bootleg. And after many painful years of watching Favre, I've never seen him drop as fast as he did in front of Strahan. I don't much care one way or the other whether Favre meant to give Strahan the sack or not, but it sure does look that way to me.

There, I feel better now.

I would like to think that all was on the up-and-up with the play, but 2 things trouble me...

1> Favre and Strahan being good friends
2> Favre's comments about giving him the sack before the game.

Now, if it were me in Brett's shoes on a bootleg with Strahan bearing down on me, I would've flopped to the ground too.... The playoffs are next week, I have a game to play, and I would like to stay healthy for that.

I have been trying to find an on-line reply of the play, so I can look at it again. Does anyone know where to look? I have tried nfl.com and cnnsi.com with no luck.

The thing is, the previous record holder most likely didn't have anyone lay down for them, but we want records to be broken so bad that it's okay to give it up when someone's "close enough."

Remember when Nikesha Sales parked under the basket -- while she was wearing a cast on her leg -- and was given an uncontested layup so she could be UConn's leading scorer? The girl who had the record before had to score her points against opposition, so why does Nikesha get a free gift?

If Emmitt Smith is three yards short of Payton's record and he doesn't get it ... to damn bad. I don't care how great a guy he is, he needs to earn the record.

everyone is calling it a gimme because brett was talking to mike just before the play...and then after the sack, all the giants were patting him on the head, sorta like a thanks for giving it to mike...

Haz, may want to try espn.com - they might have it, although you'd have to do a little searching at this date, most likely - if it's still up. There was an article printed up here about it, and it seemed to take a neutral stance on it, maybe favoring that it wasn't intended slightly, so I tentatively rescend what I had said earlier about media bias.... don't expect it to hold too long, though.

Geez Brett, you really took this memo to heart. I didn't much think you read this message board, and even so, didn't think you would take action on this post. You must have missed the part where I said 'should you meet the Bears again.' But it's the thought that counts, so way to go Brett!

BTW, for those that no joke is too obvious, this is also a joke (just like the memo).
