VH1 started showing the "I Love the 90's" episodes this week. (Hurry, you only have 723 more chances to see it in repeats!) For those who haven't seen it so far, it's pretty much the same format as the 70's and 80's shows. They give even more unfunny airtime to Michael Ian Black and Hal Sparks, who must be under contract with VH1 or something. Chris Jericho seems to have a lot of quotes this time around, and seeing the Hulkster doing a brief cameo wearing the Digital Underground "Humpty Dance" schnozz was pretty damn funny.
Anyway, it's mostly crap but I still Tivo every episode. And man, that Claudia from Party of Five turned out lookin' Olsen Hot.
I think that the "I Love the..." series may have jumped the shark. Ashamedly, I have tended to laugh at things Black and Sparks said in the first three editions. This time(and I have only see '90 and '91 to date) it's been more "enh". Hell, I had never even heard of the movie Lambada before that episode.
Incidentally, how did we gloss over the Gulf War except for the brief mention when talking about Super Bowl XXV?
What's disturbing about Bowling for Columbine and Fahrenheit 9/11 is that both are classic propaganda. Events are shown out of order, suggesting conspiracy by confusing audiences about the sequence of events; events are shown out of context, edited to create an appearance differing from actual events; scenes of horror are intermixed with scenes of normalcy, suggesting all is horror; viewers are given no way of knowing what is fact, what is opinion, and what is made up. - Noted Warmonger Greg Easterbrook

*Gasp* Lambada, the forbidden dance!* Never seen the movie, but here in Europe lambada music and related stuff was the big hype for about a summer..
They probably skipped the war because they try to stay clear from what goes on right now?
Oh, and Claudia, is that Lacey Chabert? Damn she annoyed me back then..I changed my mind in the last couple of years though.
(edited by dMp on 14.7.04 2157) *sigh* Why bother?
I've never been bothered by Hal Sparks. He's not above telling an embarassing personal story to get a laugh. He seems interested in the subject matter, and generally enthusiastic to be there. That's pretty refreshing, especially when everyone else is pulling the same, "I'm so exhausted by how sucky all these things from this decade were. Oh, as if."
Michael Ian Black, on the other hand, just comes off as supercilious and wearied by the crushing weight of his intelligence and understanding of the ironies of the world. As if he's some sort of beleagured sage. He also seems to have pioneered a new type of humor: repeating a previous sentence reaaaaaaally slooooooowly.
Voice over: The Macarena became an overnight sensation. Michael Ian Black: The Macarena. Truly did.... Become. An overnight.... Sensation. [nods knowingly at camera]
Ahh ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha! Hilarity! It's ironic that he restated something! And SLOWLY!!! Ah ha ha ha ha! Genius!

Because really the center of focus for that segment was Scott Norwood. The Gulf War and Whitney Houston were part of the scenery.
As for the show itself:
I think because the 80s covered my childhood and the 90s is more my high school/college/just graduated years AND I have a far better recollection of the 90s than the 80s. I spent half of I Love The 80s bieng reminded things I had blocked out. Plus, there hasn't been long enough separation from most of this stuff...but Vh1 seems determined to do what they do with every good gimmick they come up with (Pop-Up, BTM, List O Rama, etc): take it and run it into the ground.
side topic: points to Jericho for correctly pointing out that Matthew McConaghey was the real star of "Dazed And Confused".
I enjoy Hal Sparks too, but what does he do besides these "I Love..." series? Seriously. I've never seen him in ANYTHING I can remember.

...other than that? Nothing....
I'll be the one secure enough in my hetero-ness to admit that I know he's one of the lead characters on "Queer as Folk", though I only know it from the promos.

He was also the host of Talk Soup after skunk boy. Of course, he was only the host for about two months.
Gravity is a contributing factor in nearly 73 percent of all accidents involving falling objects.
Hal Sparks is better known right now for his role on Showtime's "Queer as Folk", he is also remembered for substituting John Henson on E!'s Talk Soup.
Off topic but on TV, this has been a great summer so far for TVholics, lots of great shows coming out, Amazing Race 5 is for me looking like it could top the last 4 out, the Poker series on ESPN, Blow Out on Bravo was a very interesting to view, Simple Life 2 has given me a couple of chuckles, the new series Entourage from HBO looks like a winner, American Casino on Discovery a great little reality show...among lots of other shows have surprised me a great deal, I actually prefer it cause they are like 6-8 episode shows where the plot/action doesn't drag on like the standard network shows.
Any other summer surprises on your TiVo?

Wow, I'm the opposite from the other people posting about Hal Sparks and Michael Ian Black. Personally, I think Black is hilarious and the only guy that gets the producers to laugh out loud. Meanwhile Hal Sparks is pretty annoying and not funny (oh, and don't forget Sparks bad cameo performance in Dude, Where's My Car).
The I Love The 90's is staying close to the other shows in the series. The people on there still turn everything into a joke about either sex or drug use. I find that I watch the shows now more to see what C-level celebrity (sorry Y2J) will be talking rather than hearing their thoughts on Pretty Woman or Ghost.
Joe Wilson (looking at Interocitor manual)- Hey, here's something my wife could use in the house... Crow T. Robot- A man? Joe Wilson- An interocitor incorporating an electron sorter. Cal Meechum- Oh, she'd probably gain 20 pounds while it did all the work for her. Tom Servo- Cal, you bitch!
Hal Sparks doing Sinead O'conner was hilarious. And, MIB (not the Men In Black) really irritates the hell out of me. I am pretty sure if his stuff was written and not spoken, I would enjoy it a lot more, its the execution that kills it for me.
Other than that, I really liked the 80s, both editions. reminded me of my youth. THis series was after I got back from the Gulf War and all the stuff into my young adulthood, so it has been sorta refreshing, bringing back some good, and some not so good memories for me.

I think I have the perfect analogy. Bill Simmons writing....

Michael Ian Black and to a lesser extent, Mo Rocca, are the only reasons I watch. Yeah, Black is working some schtick, but he had the ONLY funny line of I Love the 70's (when talking about Fiddler On The Roof):
"19th century singing Russian Jews?? Box office gold."
Or maybe I'm just still giving him residual love from his years on The State. Are they still letting Donald Logue do his "unfinished thoughts?" Christ, if they were funny, let him continue his little improvs, otherwise....
And the idiots clinging to their masculinity from Sportscenter I could do without. Yeah, you liked Harrison Ford's movies. Thanks Rich.

Sigh. I've seen '91 and '94 and see no signs of Donal Logue.
He is missed, indeed. (Though his TV wife taking his place gives me something to stare at.)
Idiot (noun): 1. A foolish or stupid person. 2. A person of profound mental retardation having a mental age below three years and generally being unable to learn connected speech or guard against common dangers. The term belongs to a classification system no longer in use and is now considered offensive. 3. Los Angeles Lakers GM Mitch Kupchak for trading away Shaquille O'Neal for NO all-stars in return, about to face a trade demand from Gary Payton, and STILL facing the possibility of losing Kobe Bryant to the Clippers. Truly astounding.
Chris Jericho has actually had a couple of funny moments on the 90's thing ... While I think that Michael Ian Black is funny, it seems as if there's a bit too much of him on this decade.
I just want everyone to know that I bought this game for PS2 because Blockbuster sucks and refuses to stock good games. And that is what this game is. Good. Rent it, buy it, whatever, but I think you will like it.
