On another note, wasn't there a Fantastic Four movie made several years ago, but shelved because it, well, really sucked? I remember renting a video sometime back then and there was a trailer for the film. It looked absolutely horrid.

The FF movie was made by Roger Corman. You know the director of movies that always have vampires from outer space attacking women with big fake racks. So I don't know whether that really counts. I am kind of looking forward to a FF movie as long as it is good. The Marvel movies have been pretty good except for Hulk so it seems like there is a decent chance this one will be watchable.

Yeah.
Stan Lee has said in numerous interviews that that movie was never really supposed to come out. It was only made because they (whoever "they" is) needed to do it or they'd lose their option on the property.
I haven't been to a comic show since like 1998, but I'm pretty sure you can find copies for sale at any decent con if you're really that interested.
Or....if you're REALLY dying to see the FF movie, and if ya have something to trade, I'd be willing to send you a copy.
It's quite strange. There's an evil midget guy named "the Jeweler" or something, who's similar to the Mole Man... but has a weird jewel fetish. The final sequence has an ANIMATED Human Torch out-racing a laser beam to New York City. Dr. Doom's the main antagonist and his skill seems to be clicking his fingers alot. I've been meaning to do a write-up of this flick on my crappy website....someday soon.
Or..if ya don't wanna mess with me, just hop on eBay. You can get copies on there for around 8 bucks.
Finally, last I heard was that this new FF movie was supposed to be a comedy?!

Well here's some other things that can give you a feel for it:
-its being directed by Tim Story, whom's credits include BARBERSHOP and the upcoming TAXI.
-Avi Arad has publically stated that the movie will be more like the Ultimate Fantastic Four comics. And I will go on the record here and now as saying that the Ultimate FF comics suck absolutely.
-Arad has also stated that this will be more in the vain of a family comedy. Not sure if its good or bad yet, but I'd like to think that filmmakers could elevate Fantastic Four above Home Alone.
-Dr. Doom is no longer Victor Von Doom and ruler of Latveria, but now he's an evil, corporate, CEO named VICTOR VAN DAMN. So not only is he now just a lame ass wannabe Lex Luthor, but has one of the stupidest names imagineable. Thanks a lot Brian Michael Bendis.
It doesn't take a genius to figure out that this is a mis-swing in the making. Just like Catwoman and Constantine.

Maybe they wanted RVD to play his Frog-Splashing brother?

Well i couldn't read the "full story" there since you have to pay to read it but I read another article (don't have the link on hand but will try to find it) that had the same people listed as those 3 but it also said David Boreanez was reading for the part of Doom.
I actually heard they maybe scratching the family comedy idea. When Mark Waid was "fired" from FF and they told the fans about the family comedy idea, the hate mail was coming in a plenty. So, they hired Waid back and I think they got the message, FF is about Family, but its not a comedy. Waid does a great job of getting that message through, so I was hoping him or Stan would do the script for it.
If it is a family comedy what famous storyline could they run minus the origin. Every marvel movie has had at least one storyline from the comics that wasn't the origin. X-Men had origin and Brotherhood with a dash of Weapon X. Spidey had origin and Green Goblin. Daredevil had origin/Death of Elektra. Punisher had his origin and then him avenging his family's death. So, I'm curious to see if they don't go a different route. FF has some great storylines in it, so I think they should do with Raimi does go back to the basics and scrap this Ultimate bullshit.

To be fair, Victor Von Doom is actually a much stupider name - we're just used to that one.
Yeah, but "Dr. Damn" just doesn't quite have the same ring to it.
To have someone with a James Earl Jones deep bass voice yelling from behind the mask "I AM DOOM!" seems alot cooler to me than "I'LL BE DAMN(ed)!". :-)

Maybe Ron Simmons can play the role.
And Jessica Alba as Sue Storm? WTF? Has Tim Story ever actually read an FF comic? I'm all for diversity in movies, but this is about as sensible as if Sam Raimi had said "Hey, I think I'll make Peter Parker a Japanese guy." I thought Rachel McAdams was a big favourite for the role, what happened there??
I am very, very worried about this movie. FF could conceivably be Marvel's third big franchise behind Spidey and X-Men, but this does not look like a good start.

FF and Ghost Rider are going to bomb. There, I said it. They're running into the pitfalls of all the other comic book movies. Face it, this run of almost-decent (Daredevil) to great (Spider-Man 2) couldn't last forever. Eventually things like the Captain America movie will happen again.
Now let's all pray for Ironman.

Oh, and Blade 2? It was awful. It might have been in the Spider-Man thread that somebody mentioned X2, Spidey2, and Blade2 all being better than the first, but I disagree. Blade 2 sucked, and I don't have much hope for Blade 3.

Oh man, Blade 2 was so much better than Blade 1, its not even imaginable. I think Marvel can make the run. Hulk was their only big disappointment even though it broke even at the box office. Unlike DC, Marvel is in their all the time with the directors making sure its at least true to the origin and the character. So what you want about the movies, but all of them have the essential origin tale down to a tee minus Hulk of course. I am curious about FF and to be honest, I'm sure changes are going on as we speak, so before we say its going to suck, lets at least watch the film.

SPIDER-MAN: The guy from The Cider House Rules fighting the guy who played Jesus; directed by the guy who did Evil Dead and written by the guy who did The Lost World.
X-MEN: Captain Picard leading a team consisting of some Australian guy, a Bond villain, some guy, the black chick from Bulworth & the little girl from The Piano against a gay British character actor; directed by the guy who did The Usual Suspects & written by a guy who never wrote a produced screenplay.

Please gimme a break. I think many of the reasons you listed were for some of those flicks the reason they were good! Here's the thing about Blade, no one ever really cared much about that character before the movies. Even now, the Blade character has never really had a successful ongoing title of his own. So when you do a movie for Blade, its not like you are treading on sacred material that's touched the hearts of many readers like Spider-man, Batman, Lord of the Rings, etc. And that's why they were able to take the movie in a bolder direction and make a violent, hard-R action flick with some good performances. I mean, I never knew anything about the Blade character before he showed up on the animated Spider-man cartoon in the 90's.
I mean, what fan wasn't happy about Sam Raimi "THE DIRECTOR OF EVIL DEAD" doing Spider-man? In 2000, I thought that was some of the best news I ever heard. And the script? David Koepp was the guy that got final screenplay credit, though a lot of it was re-written by Spider-man 2's screenwriter, Alvin Sargent (stuff like a lot of the MJ/Peter scenes) and Scott Rosenberg. Koepp really wrote like one draft in 2000 and Raimi had some other guys polish it.
X-men. Again you make it sound like some of those things you listed negative. Everyone and their mother knew the only guy to play Professor Xavier was Patrick Stewart. And by whatever luck exists, it actually ended up happening. Guys like Stewart and McKellan are actors trained in the stage and Shakespeare and they brought credibility to the film and their roles. Bryan Singer as the director, I definitely thought that worked on paper. Since he did the Usual Suspects, we know he can do a good AND SERIOUS ensemble picture which was important for the X-men films. I think getting an unknown to play Wolverine was a bold and brilliant move, b/c I gotta tell you "on paper" the original guy they wanted to play Wolverine (Dougray Scott) was not exactly making me excited.

To be fair, the Tomb of Dracula, the title which Blade starred in was for its time a violent hard risque action comic. It was also tremendously succesful, running for eighty issues, the longest run for a comic book with a villain as the lead. It was successful for a couple of reasons - Gene Colan's art which seemed designed for a gothic story and Marv Wolfman's writing. (To be fair, the first eight issues were written by Gerry Conway.)
During its run it was considered the best comic on the stands hands down (much like Swamp Thing was later with Alan Moore or Sandman later with Neil Gaiman) It was the title that guys bought for their girlfriends to convince them that comics were ART, so please stop bitching about the other ones that I buy.
Marv put the focus of the series not on Dracula but on the group hunting Dracula, who were a group of the maost interesting flawed characters ever to assemble as a team:
Blade (natch) the obsessive vampire hunter who is half vampire
Hannibal King - the Vampire Hunter/PI who is a vampire
Frank Drake - last living descendent of Dracula and a great big whiny pussy
Rachel van Helsing - grand-daughter of THE Van Helsing and someone who makes Blade's obsessions look like a hobby
Dr. Quincy Harker - wheelchair bound descendant of THE Harkers from Bram Stoker's novel who hates Dracula because he was forced to kill his own vampire daughter - plus the whole can't walk thing - also in the series the one who comes closest to actually staking Dracula
Taj Nital - The strongest hero in the series - but also a pacifist (except when it comes to vampires.)
There was a lot of self-loathing on this team and tons of guilt.
Well, to be fair Tomb of Dracula is not Spider-man or FF or even Daredevil. It had an average fan base, but obviously couldn't survive the 80s. Blade is a great character, no arguments there, but he is not an icon. The Marvel films have done a great job of displaying the heros as larger than life, but also giving them the patented Stan Lee flawed human characteristics. FF has a ton of pontential in their comics to be a great movie. The Dr. Doom storyline alone is worth going to see. I just think its way too early to say it sucks. Also, if David Borneaz plays, it will rule, he made Angelus, one of the greatest TV villians ever.
