Where did you hear that Macguire is pushing for Sandman? According to IMDB's trivia page for Spider Man, Macguire said he's never read the comics and never wants to. How would he even know who the Sandman is?

on the vh1 special they quoted macguire talking about how he asked the producers for some comics that really showed spidermans character, so they gave him the first 4 years and he read them all.

He's brought it up in three separate interviews I've seen/read when asked about personal preference (Empire, Total Film, MTV).

Once upon a time in China, some believe, around the year one double-ought three, head priest of the White Lotus Clan, Pai Mei was walking down the road, contemplating whatever it is that a man of Pai Mei's infinite power contemplates - which is another way of saying "who knows" - when a Shaolin monk appeared, traveling in the opposite direction. As the monk and the priest crossed paths, Pai Mei, in a practically unfathomable display of generosity, gave the monk the slightest of nods. The nod was not returned. Now was it the intention of the Shaolin monk to insult Pai Mei or did he just fail to see the generous social gesture? The motives of the monk remain unknown. What is known, are the consequences. The next morning Pai Mei appeared at the Shaolin Temple and demanded of the Temple's head abbot that he offer Pai Mei his neck to repay the insult. The Abbot at first tried to console Pai Mei, only to find Pai Mei was inconsolable. So began the massacre of the Shaolin Temple and all 60 of the monks inside at the fists of the White Lotus. And so began the legend of Pai Mei's five point palm exploding heart technique.

Great!!! Thank you for making my day! I laughed so hard at that, it produced tears.

Peter Parker should definitely feel the pain of Turner D. Century's flying bicycle and flame umbrella, as well as his uber-mustache. He could be a wheelin' dealin' son-of-a-gun and steal Aunt May away from Pete, all while questioning Mary Jane's honor and sexual ways and teaching Harry how a real man behaves.

I just saw it today. Absolutely incredible. I still can't believe how good that movie was.

So long as Spidey 3 is as story driven as the series has been so far, it'll rock ass.

I just saw the movie today. It was great. Better than the first (if only because two things sucked in Spidey 1: The Goblin costume, and several of MJ's scenes). Everything in this movie was done to perfection. No gripes from me.

And of course, it got me thinking about the next film(s). So here's what I'd like to see:

#3: Harry is going crazy, and will eventually decide to take up the Goblin mantle but no Goblin/Spidey interaction in this movie. In fact, Harry tries to make amends with Peter, and then tries to destroy Peter's life from behind the scenes. The should most likely be the Lizard, but the Scorpian could do. Whichever it is, Harry helped influence their creation either by torturing Peter's favorite prof by having the experiment be tampered with, or by creating Scorpian, and influencing JJJ to set him on Spidey.

#4: Harry takes it to the next level against both Spidey and Peter, turning things sour between MJ and Peter, and by setting some more bad guys to tear Spidey to pieces. He hires a killer and turns him into the Hobgoblin. Harry sends Hobby and a few goons (Rhyno, Shocker, others?) after Spidey. Spidey gets the tar beaten out of him, but by a stroke of luck (either by meteor or John Jameson crashing to earth ala the cartoon) Spidey gets his symboite black costume and manages to take out the bad guys. At the end, after almost killing Hobgoblin, Spidey runs off and ditches the symbiote (which ends up on #1 asshole reporter, Eddie Brock) and Harry kills the Hobgoblin himself, deciding it was time to update his dad's rig and do the job himself.

#5: Venom. I don't care what Raimi thinks (as much as I love him) Venom was always cooler than cool. But no Carnage. Nobody but Peter Parker ever bled in Spider-Man 2. Carnage is a mass murderer with super-powers, and any movie that did him justice would have to be rated R. Spider-Man manages to defeat Venom, and things in his life turn around as he gets a new love interest (If Dunst is still around, MJ comes back, if not... Felicia Hardy, anyone?). But before Peter can catch his breath, Harry is finally ready to play for real and that just leaves us with...

#6:

That'd make ME happy. As long as they managed to keep the same cast (though if Dunst wants to walk, then just get Harry to make MJ leave Peter somehow).

If Raimi is dead set against doing Venom, then I think they should do the Sinister Six. Think about it, Harry Osborn hires 5 criminals, either they already have their gimmicks or he pays to outfit them with costumes/powers, then they wear down Spidey enough for Green Goblin to return and destroy him for good. You don't need to go into backstory, they're just cannon fodder, and then they can do some of the classic "Spider Man reels off one-liners while pummelling loser villans" scenes. Each one takes a little more out of Spidey, and MJ gets more and more concerned as Peter Parker comes home more F'ed up after each encounter. Plus, since Harry knows Peter Parker is Spider Man, he can send some of the Six after MJ, since she's "betrayed him". Electro, Rhino, Mysterio, Chameleon, Scorpion...that'd be a good line up. Sandman and Hydro Man would be sweet, although too much CGI. Vulture wouldn't be bad either, although he was never one of the more interesting characters.

Perhaps we didn't see anyone else's blood, but Ock's wife took a glass shard to the face and that room full of doctors definitely bled off camera. Not that I'm rooting for Carnage to appear in the next film, but if anyone could make Carnage as menacing as he is with a PG-13 rating, it'd be Raimi.

The series needs more Kraven. Anyone who doesn't like Kraven or thinks he's too "B-Level" needs to read "Kraven's Last Hunt" and be amazed. Maybe the randomly placed neighbor girl is a niece or grandchild?

That could actually work. And Kraven isn't B level, at least to me, and if they wrote it well, he could serve to get them out of the "Wacky Science Experiment gone Wrong!" trap for the next film.

SPIDER-MAN 3 DETAILS:
Release Date: May 2007
Director: Sam Raimi (All but signed, says AICN & Wizard)
Writer: TBA
Peter Parker/Spider-Man: Tobey Maguire
Mary Jane Watson: Kirsten Dunst
Harry Osborn: James Franco
May Parker: Rosemary Harris
J. Jonah Jameson: J.K. Simmons
John Jameson: Daniel Gillies
Curt Connors: Dylan Baker
Betty Brant: Elisabeth Banks
Joe Robertson: Bill Nunn
Hoffman: Ted Raimi
Norman Osborn (Cameo): Willem Dafoe (DUH!)
Cameo: Bruce Campbell

Let's see...here's what I'd do...

Spoiler Below: Highlight text to read

At the end of Spidey 2, MJ & Harry both know Peter's secret identity...but neither knows that the other knows. I'd have the story pick up right after the end of the second film. John Jameson is PISSED. Harry is PISSED...and has access to OsCorp's crazy crap. So...Harry uses John Jameson to be the Hobgoblin (or brainwashes him, ala Lefty Donovan, Ned Leeds & Flash Thompson). Peter hears about a goblin running loose (which freaks out MJ), jumps to the conclusion that Harry's behind it and confronts him...but Harry has airtight alibis for everything. Then, Hobby attacks Spidey but gets trounced. John comes to his sense and rolls on Harry whilst in jail. Harry decides it's time to stop playing around, finally dons his father's Green Goblin garb and kidnaps MJ and places her in an elaborate boobytrap. A swank Spidey/Goblin2 battle ensues. Harry comes to his senses and saves Peter & MJ from the boobytraps, but dies doing so (ala Spectacular Spider-Man #200). The trilogy ends as Harry dies a hero, and proves he's not like his father. It ties up all the loose ends and frees up Spidey for some much needed Kraven's Last Hunt action in Spidey 4.

I saw it this weekend and I loved it. Every moment was a dream come to true, this is my favorite superhero movie ever, good-bye Superman I/II. I love Freeway420's idea for part 3. I hate Venom, Carnage and the whole symbiote crap, so if Sam doesn't want to do them, great. I would like to see a sinster six thing, but that would take too much doing since Doc Ock is dead and was their leader. I do think Harry as Green Goblin or Hobgoblin would be cool, but it needs another secondary villian like Lizard to more effective. Harry has never and will never stand a chance against Peter, so you need to add another villian to make it intersting. Lizard is a good choice, because he will attack both Spidey and Goblin without hesitantion.

I loved this movie, go see it again.

Spider-Man 2 was a great sequel, and in a lot of ways, was better than the first one. The reason being that they had such a strong base of characters from the first film that they actually built on those and had depth to move forward in the second, into the third movie. They're doing the same thing with the X-Men movies, and it appears that Marvel has its shit together right now.

SPOILERS BELOW: (Since this is a "reactions" thread, I would assume everyone has seen the movie by this point)

Spoiler Below: Highlight text to read
I think it's obvious from the design of the first movie's plot that this franchise is originally intended to be a trilogy. The big theme of the first movie was "No matter how hard I try, the ones I love will always be hurt the most" or some jazz. That was expanded upon in the second one where we saw Peter's friends come to their own conclusions on what Peter thought in the first one.

For the third, movie, all of the cards are on the table. Harry knows. Not just about Parker/Spider-Man, but also about his father, the Green Goblin. Mary Jane knows, and doesn't care. Aunt May gave a strong hint that she knows.

Whether they throw Kraven, or Lizard, or Venom in there, the heart of the third movie is going to be on Peter Parker vs his friends. Seeing as how both MJ and Harry know, I think they're both gonners in the third movie, and it'll be a little darker in tone. They're still kiddie movies, but with an ending as "sappy" as they did for #2 (it was still the right ending), there was a lot of obvious setup for the third, which I think will climax many of the open arcs for Harry and MJ.

I think all of those people on the train are dead, too, but that'll probably happen off-screen, or in another burning building.

I had no idea there would be a Willem Dafoe cameo, and it happened at just the right moment. That was awesome. I would have no problem if Spider-Man 3 was just Parker vs Goblin II the whole time. We don't necessarily need another villain.

While I think the alien suit for vemon is too far fetched for #3 how about bringing Venom in another way.

So far Ozcorp has been responsible for all the super-villains. Harry knows that Peter is Spidey. He was there when Peter was bitten. Maybe he puts two and two together and trys to create his own spiderman. Enter Brock who is disgruntled that Peter has taken his place as #1 photog. Harry recreates the spider bite, and adds an Ozcorp coustume to make venom. It all starts as a way to make spidey look bad as venom performs evil in spidey's name. Then when Spidey defeats venom Harry goes off the deep end and dons the goblin costume for the final showdown.

That gives you both Venom and Goblin #2 for the end of the trilogy.

It would probably be easier in pacing for a movie to retcon the Spider Slayers to Harry as a way to keep Spidey busy for the first part of the movie until the battle with Goblin v 2.0 as opposed to the Sinister Six. Because if you do any backstory on them whatsoever, it's a 3 hour movie minimum. And I realize doing origins of the 2nd tier villians is like doing a 10-minute interview viginette with a jobber, but one thing this series has been very good with is explaining its major characters in 3 dimensions, and not presuming everyone watching knows the canon sideways.

But since you can't do that with the Electros and Rhinos, as there's not enough time, and the alternative is just throwing them up there (which is too much...it's reducing 1st tier villans to 2nd tier villan status and 2nd tier villans to a random goon squad) it's probably better served to just introduce the Smythes as being subcontracted by Harry and they make these giant spider robots. No muss, no fuss and about 5 fewer backstories to tell, since you'd be only responsible for explaining the Smythes.

Also, honorable mention goes to the elevator scene, which was one of the highlights. Just great, clever stuff. This is what popular filmmaking should be, it's smart and it's good. I hadn't noticed that Raimi put the same car in every movie, though...

One question I had about the end... was Harry gearing up to don the Green Goblin gear, or is he gonna be Hobgoblin? I remember reading the comics as a kids and Spidey unmaskes some villain and it turned out to be Harry... was that Hobgoblin?

As for future villains, I always liked Kingpin.

Hobgoblin was a legitimate bad ass, playing all sorts of mind games and keeping his true identity secret for years, setting up all sorts of schmucks to take the fall for him. Hell, he even retired unknown and almost got away with it.

Not to mention some of the ass kickings he handed poor Pete.

REFERENCES & SUCH:

John Jameson did indeed work for NASA in the comics, first appearing in Amazing Spider-Man #1 crashlanding a space capsule (retconned into a "shuttle" in recent years). Spider-Man saved him, only to get J. Jonah Jameson to blame him for sabotaging the spacecraft (which didn't happen) and trying to steal John's spotlight. From what I recall, John Jameson never did date Mary Jane...but he did date Ravencroft Institute (think Arkham, but for Spider-villains) head Ashley Kafka for a while. Dr. Otto Octavius was a radiation expert at the US Atomic Research Center. He didn't know Peter Parker at all before the accident. He was doing a vaguely-explained atomic experiment that went wacky and adhered the arms to him in "some strange way". John Byrne's crappy Chapter One miniseries retconned so that Peter Parker got his powers at the same experiment, but Marvel's ignored that since then. Spider-Man got the bitchslap from Doc Ock in their first fight, because Ock had more arms in wacky 60s Marvel Logic. Mary Jane Watson apparantly ALWAYS knew that Peter Parker was Spider-Man. We found out in the graphic novel Spider-Man: Parallel Lives that she was next door and saw Peter Parker up in his room, then Spider-Man leaving it via the window...and put 2 and 2 together. She told him in Amazing Spider-Man #257. Drug-addled Harry Osborn saw Spider-Man & the Green Goblin fight to Gobby's death in Amazing Spider-Man #122. We're told in Amazing Spider-Man #126 that he took the costume off of his dead father to protect his good name, then began to plot against Spider-Man. Maybe it was the drugs he took starting in the classic "Drug Issues" of Amazing Spider-Man (#96-98), but Harry gradually got more and more paranoid, thinking everyone knew he was the Green Goblin and plotting against him. Meantime, since Gwen Stacy was dead the sexual tension kept a-growin' between Peter & MJ. At the end of Amazing Spider-Man #135 Peter came home after a battle, left his costume in an open drawer...and Harry found it. Harry went even more nuts, went to his father's hide out and presumably took the Goblin Formula...because in the next issue he donned his father's old costume and continued the fight against Spider-Man. I'll save some of the awesome parts of Amazing Spider-Man #136...mainly because they'll probably be used by Raimi & Co. in Spider-Man 3. Needless to say, pick up Essential Spider-Man Volume 6 for an awesome reprint. It's probably as close to the plot as we'll get, considering Harry knows...MJ knows (but hasn't told anyone), but Peter doesn't know that either of 'em knows. Plus, Peter & MJ are more or less an item as of around this ish.

And for the curious...

GOBLINS AND SUCH:
GREEN GOBLIN: Industrialist Norman Osborn. First appeared in Amazing Spider-Man #14, died after killing Gwen Stacy the previous issue in the classic "Goblin's Last Stand" in Amazing Spider-Man #122. Returned in Peter Parker: Spider-Man #75 in the final issue of the infamous Clone Saga, revealing he was behind the whole damned thing.
GREEN GOBLIN II: Harry Osborn took up his father's mantle in Amazing Spider-Man #136 and randomly went nuts, was institutionalized and constantly forgot and reremembered that Peter Parker was Spider-Man. Remembered for good and tried to kill Peter in Spectacular Spider-Man #200, but had a change of heart and died saving his best friend's life.
GREEN GOBLIN III: Dr. Bart Hamilton, Harry's shrink, became the Goblin in Amazing Spider-Man #176 after Harry told him everything while under hypnosis. This was the weakest Goblin and died in issue #180.
GREEN GOBLIN IV: Ben Urich's nephew Daily Bugle intern Phil Urich found an old Osborn warehouse and was exposed to the gas and became a heroic Goblin in Green Goblin #1. This was around the Onslaught times in Marvel. When Norman returned, Phil quit in Green Goblin #13.
HOBGOBLIN: Some hoods found an old Osborn hideout in Amazing Spider-Man #238. Soon after, a new Goblin appeared calling himself the Hobgoblin. This Goblin was probably the coolest thing Roger Stern ever wrote, as nobody knew who he was... Lefty Donovan was hypnotized into posing as him and got killed (Amazing #245). Flash Thompson got hypnotized and got arrested (Amazing #276). Ned Leeds got hypnotized when he got too close to discovering the Hobgoblin's true identity. So, the real Hobgoblin decided to quit, but leaked that Leeds was Hobby to the criminal underworld. The Jack O'Lantern (Jason Macendale) hired the Foreigner to kill Leeds in Germany (which he did in Spider-Man vs. Wolverine #1), and Macendale took the mantle for himself. After a while the original Hobby returned and killed Macendale while he was in jail after Macendale revealed the Leeds was the original to the public. Spider-Man & Betty Brant Leeds discovered that Roderick Kingsley was the real original Hobgoblin and behind the whole thing. Kingsley went to jail, but the returned original Green Goblin broke him out of jail. Kingsley & Osborn fought to a stalemate, and Kingsley decided to retire to the Caribbean...for now.
