if the lakers get coach k to leave duke i will be the happiest basketball fan alive. he is BY FAR the best college coach. bagging him would guarantee success for the lakers for years to come. this guy commands respect like no other. and he has some experience with pros in the 1992 olympics where he was an assistant coach. he will do well, the players will like him, and all will be good in lalaland.

The real question here is: Could he work the Ref's in the pros just as well (or better) than he does in the NCAA's?

And Maryland the new Duke? Puh-leaze. If K leaves, that puts Roy and the Heels (as much as I hate to say it) back in the driver's seat. With Duke trying to adjust, a couple new teams in the conference to beat on, and the players he's got? If Carolina didn't win the ACC outright, it'd make Roy the world's biggest chump.

You've got to be kidding. The only two consistantly A-level programs in the ACC for the last ten years have been Duke and Maryland. Sure, Carolina, Tech, and NC State have shown flashes of brilliance. But no teams in the conference other than Duke or Maryland have won a national title and Maryland is the only school to make every NCAA tournament since '94...

It's Duke and Maryland, and then the rest of the conference. Sorry...

God Bless Ronald Reagan, and may he rest in peace...

* * * * * * *

For decades, American had waged a Cold War, and few believed it could possibly end in our own lifetimes. The president was one of those few. And it was the vision and the will of Ronald Reagan that gave hope to the oppressed, shamed the oppressors and ended an evil empire . . . Ronald Reagan was more than a historic figure. He was a providential man who came along just when our nation and the world most needed him.

Fellow Americans, here lies a graceful and a gallant man.
- Dick Cheney, 6/9/2004

Reagan had a rare and prized gift called leadership, that ineffable and sometimes magical quality that sets some men and women apart so that millions will follow them as they conjure up grand visions and invite their countrymen to dream big and exciting dreams.-Brian Mulroney, 6/11/2004

I had this whole long post extolling the virtues of Carolina, but I don't really think it's needed. Suffice it to say: I disagree. I don't think that three years of sub-par play by the Heels suddenly makes Maryland the top dog. Hell, I'm not even sure if they'll be top five in the ACC this year. But we'll see.

I think the ACC will find out just how good a coach Roy is.

I heard Kobe actually made a phone call to Coach K to coach him.

The NBA money is tempting, but seeing the NBA coaching carousel that goes on, especially in the last few years where even coaches who do a good job get fired. That has to turn off Coach K just a bit... Especially considering in Duke he is IT, he pretty much controls every aspect of basketball operations. Not even the top coaches get that in the pro, which the motto these last few years is get hired just so you can get fired.

Good for him, I say! *applauds*

CNNSI.com's Phil Taylor analyzes the implications here. Perhaps being asked to coach the Lakers, and the public courtship, will enhance Krzyzewski's already stellar image and even help him with recruiting?

I doubt that K was very interested in the Lakers job. IMO, he used the offer as a little leverage to up his contract perks and to boost his own ego - now we'll get to hear Duke Vitale gush even more about Saint Mike.

K manipulated this in his favor, he lost Deng after one and Livingston before he came to campus and I'll bet he's hoping that all of this love from ESPN and the rest of the media will be just the necessary free publicity to help him land more top tier recruits. Not that he needs much help with recruits - Duke alumni hiring players' parents help with that as well.

Dirt is on the money, Pitino is despised by many UK fans because he went to Louisville, if K had left, his fans would have revolted if he would have returned to NCAA without returning to Durham.

But, K is far from the best coach in the college game. He's a great coach, he is one of the best coaches, but I don't think that any one coach can be called "the" best. Strong arguments can be made for 5 or 6 different coaches.

Or maybe, I just despise dUKe.

So, is Coach K one of the "5 or 6" best? I think you're saying he is, which is hardly "far from the best coach".

All I know is I LOVE my job and the people I work with, but if someone offered out of the blue to triple my salary I'd have a HARD time saying no, so good for Coach K if he chose happiness over dollars. Mike Price should've been so lucky as to do the same.

I highly doubt this is the case. When a young high school player gets to decide between 4 more years of school or going to the NBA, the choice that will make him a millionaire will win out everytime.

I totally understand this argument.

But....

It's more than life-changing to have your salary tripled when you go from $20k to $60k or something like that. A decision to take the new job though you love your old one would be VERY difficult and I think most (if not all) of us would take the higher paying job.

But when you already make millions of dollars every year, it's a little easier to take happiness and comfort over a bigger salary.

I mean, it's not like he's only "scraping by" right now and gave up a possible lavish lifestyle to stay at Duke.

Besides, if anything, their problem is that they're doing TOO well with their recruiting, in that they're getting the level of players that are good enough prospects to try and make the jump.

Put it this way: you don't see Florida Int'l Basketball with the same problem of losing recruits to the NBA. We were just tickled to shit to HAVE two FIU alums in the NBA at the same time. And go figure, they were both playing in Utah last year.

I was more referring to the recruits that would tend to opt to attend college. But, I freely admit that I despise dUKe (yes, because of 1992) and I feel that K's image may not be truly reflective of the truth.

Caught me there, but I'm really trying to be as gracious as possible and weigh fact verses my passion in not liking K or dUKe. Although I do feel that it could be argued that he should have won more titles with the talent he has had.

I think that guys like Tubby Smith, Gary Williams, Roy Williams, Bobby Knight, Rick Pitino, and Tom Izzo are established coaches who are true "peers" with regards to K - though Roy's lack of a title could pull him away from that group.

I also think less "established" coaches such as Mark Few, Bill Self, Tom Crean, and Kelvin Sampson are every bit as good as K as well - or at least they have the potential to be.
