I caught the midnight show tonight and just got back. This movie is deserving of all the hype plus more. Everything in the movie was done terrificly from the character development to the action. And Doctor Octopus is a site to see himself alone. Some movies get too cute with CGI and special effects but Spider Man adds a face and compelling story to go along with it. Its one of those rare movies were everyone in the audience is actually rooting for the characters. Props to everyone who put this movie together.

Spoilers will be within!

THINGS I LOVED ABOUT SPIDER-MAN 2;
-Peter Parker & Spider-Man. They nailed the duality and basically captured the charm of the 1960s & 1970s version of the character.
-Harry Osborn. Another spot-on characterization, only they went the high road and didn't have him being a nannering drug addict. And the ending? AWESOME.
-Doctor Octopus. Awesomeness. You like him and his wife at the beginning, feel sorry for him, and then you're afraid of him. All at once. Awesome. Molina rules.
-Mary Jane. Again, they nailed 1970s MJ. She's perfect.
-Doctor Connors. Awesome small role.
-Betty Brant. Awesome in a tiny role.
-J. Jonah Jameson. Fan-f*cking-tastic. Made every scene he was in better. Plus, they captured his relationship with Robbie!
-The fights. Dear God, they rock. Dear God.
-Everything else was awesome, too.

Seriously, I can't think of anything wrong with the movie. The only possible nitpick I thought of was "How could the Bugle get a "Spider-Man Returns" headline out when he has to meet Doc Ock at 3pm"...and then I remembered the Late Editions that get published later in the day. So...yeah. I rock.

If you skip the rest, just read this:

GO SEE THIS MOVIE. NOW. IF THE THEATER IS NOT OPEN, BREAK IN.

Spoilers ahead, as you'd expect.

I was at one of the largest theaters in Michigan. They had four showings at midnight. All of them were sold out by showtime. If anything is going to break Spider-Man's record...it's probably going to be this.

Best fantasy-based movie of the year. Bar none. If you want to put it in the sci-fi category it wins that too. There were many in-jokes to fans (Curt Connors having one arm, the Hulk-like ripping of the costume when he's stopping a train...and those are just the really obvious ones), but nothing that took away or distracted from the story.

This was about as close to a flawless 50/50 blending of comic/film as you can get.

Casting was great as expected since everyone returned. If Maguire does nothing else worth looking at, at least he's probably the best Peter Parker they could ever find. At this point I think he's surpassed Reeve as Superman (certainly no small feat) and is neck-and-neck with Jackman's Wolverine.

Dunst is a decent MJ again. The Parker-MJ stuff is solid. Her character is not as much as an outgoing, dancing party animal as she was at that age in the comic, but that's a good thing.

J.K. Simmons is perfection as he was in the last movie, talking a mile a minute and being the biggest prick possible. I did notice this time around they gave him significantly more screen time though...I hope they don't give him even more in the third film. He's great, but I don't want them to overdo it. The "Where Is Spider-Man Now??" got a genuine big laugh out of me.

Octavius was well-casted, especially the body type...the slightly overweight scientist who goes nuts. A LOT more intimidating than the Goblin was in the first movie.

Harry Osborn is good as well, and the scene where he's drunk and smacks Parker in the face was possibly the most impactful scene in the movie.

Aunt May did a damn good job again too (outside of this one really lame line, more on that below), although like Simmons they shouldn't give her much more screen time than they did here, or she'll start to overstay the welcome. Not too crazy about Spider-Man talking to her...seems like she'd recognize that voice.

The advantage in doing something like this as opposed to something adapted from a book is with a book you always know what's going to happen, and the best they can do is throw in a few minor surprises here and there. With stuff like THIS movie, there is a 40 year history to pick through to fit the story well (not to mention the stuff they come up with specifically for the movie)...case and point...in his mind, he doesn't WANT to be Spider-Man anymore, so his power start to crap out on him. I remember picking up the series where that happened like 7 or 8 years ago. Then they ALSO take stuff from the books and "reinvent" it...MJ never was engaged to Jameson's kid in the comics (to my knowledge), but ties in so well here you'd think it DID happen originally. There's just so much source material you really DON'T know what's going to happen, other than the good guy wins in the end.

Minor nitpick - they got rid of most of the hokey dialogue that was a problem a few times in the first one, but a few spots still stood out...the biggest offender was Aunt May waking up from a dream and saying "oh, I thought it was many years ago..." before she realizes she was dreaming. Blah. Only other major screw-up was the shot of MJ running away from the church in her wedding dress. They could have cut that out and nothing would have been lost...just go from the empty church doorway to Parker's apartment.

On a related note, at first the scene where Octavius is talking to the arms seemed dumb, but since the arms are sentient in the film (in the comic, they aren't if I'm not mistaken), it makes sense. I suppose there is some room for debate that he's really just a nutjob and thinks the arms are alive, but they went through a pretty notable explanation that the arms are artificially intelligent, so I doubt it.

I'm not a fan of MJ's "I kind of knew it was you the whole time" thing at the end. Aunt May was the one who did that in the comics before she died (although I think that may have been retconned...I stopped reading the regular Spider-books after the clone took over). I don't have a problem with MJ knowing who Spider-Man is, that's part of what makes the current Ultimate Spider-Man entertaining. It's just that one line that bugged me.

The pacing in this movie is outstanding. There's always something happening, but it's never too fast. It does get a little wordy near the end, but never to the point where it becomes an annoyance.

It's funny, the Harry-finds-out-who-Spider-Man-is thing was a little underwhelming (mostly because that was the scene everyone was excited about...hard to live up to those expectations), but a few minutes later the crowd popped HUGE for the Willem Dafoe cameo near the end (gotta love midnight crowds...it's always the diehard fans). I still hate that Goblin costume, and it was obvious Harry was going to take over for the next film, but it still worked well.

Once again, SAM RAIMI IS THE FUCKING MAN. That scene where the arms "come to life" in the hospital had Evil Dead II written all over it. PERFECTION. He's the only director who can really pull off that B-movie schlock in an A-list Hollywood film and make it work.

Raimi's gotta be one of the few directors with the balls to include something like the funny-as-hell "Raindrops" montage in the middle of the film...most directors wouldn't even think about putting something like that in there. It added a pretty solid and funny moment.

Nice to see he got the car he gets in every movie he directs in there (not hard since it's always just parked outside Parker's house), AND even got Bruce Campbell in there again, which I was not expecting but I guess I should have. Campbell was good as always in his tiny 2 minute role just like in the last one.

Rumors abound that Venom is the villian in the third film. I hope not. I just don't like the evil twin concept (which is bascially what it is) for a film like this...at least not yet. I'd honestly rather see Venom get a seperate movie or something where he's against Carnage. Speaking of "seperate movies," they showed a trailer for Catwoman before it started, and damn does that movie look like SHIT.

Not as much product placement this time around, which was nice (although there was still some).

They're establishing a rare pattern here. X-Men 2 was better than the first. Spider-Man 2 was better than the first. Blade 2 was (arguably) better than the first. And ALL of the original films were pretty damn good to begin with. I just hope they don't overdo it...Blade 3 is on the way (wish they would have put the trailer before Spider-Man 2), as is Spider-Man 3. X-Men 3 is almost a lock as well. But after that I hope they think about winding it up, because eventually there's ALWAYS a stinker if you overstay your welcome...Star Wars fans know that (even though I'm not one).

One of the few movies I'll probably go see in the theater again. I do that about once every other year.

Hell I'll just SAY spoiler ALERT~! in case I drop some.

If Harry is a Goblin of some sort in the next one, we best get some Sinister six action rolling to avoid repeating the fights of the first. Goblin, Rhino, Shocker, Scorpion, Kraven, and Vulture would hit the spot just fine.

Though I'd rather see some one on one with Lizard, Kraven, or Scorpion to be honest.

And please... no Venom. Ever. Movies take two hours. Venom's story... would have to be streamlined AGAIN somehow or intro'd as a subplot in the third.

Though really, if Peter had quickie sown a black costume for the final fight I would have been tickled pink.

Nice to see the web balls shot off a little like the Scarlet Spider's stingers.

This sort of lacked the brutal ass kicking Spidey usually receives from Doc Ock before turning it around. But it was good. But at least they didn't make beating Ock as easy as ripping his goggles off (you'd figure he'd get a sturdy strap to hold those on or something....)

That being said, the fights were still top notch.

My least favorite part was the gratuitous unmasking during the train situation. Part of Spidey's appeal, to me, was that under the mask he could've been ANY race. Unmasked in front of a nearly all Caucasian crowd who just happen to be honest enough never to talk to a sketch artist was a bit hokey.

I hope Stan Lee saves me if anything ever appears to be about to fall on me.

If they had thrown Joey Pants in the background as a line-less Phil Urich it would have topped name dropping Eddie Brock from the last movie as geekapalooza trivia.

Not sure if you were just saying that because it happened, or because you thought it was the first time, but she did say it in the first movie. "I gotta run, tiger."

Regarding villians you mentioned:

Green Goblin II - Will obviously be in the next one, no sense talking about whether it's a good idea.

Rhino - Too B-level.

Shocker - Ditto.

Scorpion - This one could be an interesting character for the next movie...Spider-Man has to stop the guy trying to kill Jameson...while Jameson continues to be a total prick towards Spider-Man.

Kraven - Dunno if they could make it work. He's just a regular guy with heightened senses and fighting ability...would be kind of a let down after flying goblins and mechanical octopus men.

Vulture - Not good enough to carry the movie on his own as the main villian, but could be a good thorn in the side in addition to GG2.

Lizard - Eh. Maybe if they reeeealllly wanted to stretch it and do a part 4, which I'm kind of hoping they don't do. They'd have to make Connors a more significant character in part 3 if they wanted to do that though. They could focus on Connors having a family and Spider-Man not wanting to hurt him, despite the fact that Connors is trying to kill him. Could be a nice chance for Raimi to get back to directing a more spooky, claustrophobic environment since Spidey would be going through the sewers looking for him. Wouldn't want to be in there too long though...people expect to see Spider-Man flipping around off of buildings and stuff, not wading through a sewer.

Others:

Electro - This one could work in a way similar to the Vulture above.

Hobgoblin - Could have a place in part 3. A "copycat criminal" that could raise the ire of GGII. GGII then shows the audience he's a badass and more dangerous than his father by taking out Hobgoblin in a really spectacular way.

Mysterio - Maybe for a little comedic relief. During the opening minutes, Spider-Man's fighting some guy who creates illusions but easily hands him his ass. Other than that, not that strong of a character.

Spencer Smythe - Not a fan of the Spider-Slayers. Wouldn't be a very exciting movie villian since it's just a guy who makes robots.

Kingpin - Not freakin' likely since that character was in Daredevil.

The Rose - Could be cute to have him be a minor-league crime boss, and elude to him being Kingpin's son at some point. Other than that, no real use for him.

Venom - No thanks for now. I already talked about this one above.

Carnage - If they really DID do a part 4, a Spidey/Venom/Carnage story would be the strongest way to go...but ONLY if they spend a chunk of part 3 setting up the backstory between Parker and Brock. Trying to cram the Venom thing into one part alone would not work. Regardless, seeing a Raimi-directed Carnage killing spree would be something to behold.

Kaine - I didn't mind this character that much in the books, honestly. But if they even go near the clone storyline with the films, I quit. Besides, if they're going to do an evil twin, they'll do Venom before Kaine.

Something I was wondering earlier re: Spider-Man 2...who was that chick who was the daughter of the landlord supposed to be? She brings him cake, you think it's going somewhere, then nothing. I kept thinking she was going to say "Hi, I'm Gwen Stacy" or "Hi, I'm Felicia Hardy." But they just left it dangling, and not in the "I wonder what will happen next?" way...it was just a "what was that all about?" thing.

The daughter of the landlord in the film that had a crush on Peter was named Ursula. She was played by actress Mangeina Tovah. I think Raimi has already said there won't be a Gwen Stacy in the films. Raimi has already basically said "No Venom" as well. Raimi is an old school Spidey fan and he is not into the 80's McFarlane era crap, or I guess "crap" to him at least. Though I guess if they get a new director and cast for the 4th film, they might want to put Venom in then. But for now, with supposedly everyone coming back for the third film, including Raimi as director I seriously doubt their will be any Venom inclusion. I mean from watching both films, you can tell that's not the direction they are going in, and they probably would've introduced Eddie Brock by now.

Eddie Brock was name-dropped by Jameson in the last film, as was Curt Conners. Not that it makes any difference, of course; I think the Brock line was just a wink and a nod to the fanboys.

I totally dug the movie. I really liked the opening credits with the Alex Ross art. Sort of set the tone for me.

I don't have anything to complain about, and I'm sure I'll see it at least once more this summer.

I think Shocker and Rhino are good choices for the same reason you like Vulture. They probably couldn't carry a movie on their own but if Spidey dispatches them all single-handedly it wouldn't make him look too powerful.

Hell, all you do to stop Rhino is move out of the way.
Shocker... fire hydrant.
Vulture, web the wings.

Leaving the main fight between Spidey and Scorpion or Goblin. Having the extra bodies makes it no walk in the park because no matter how easily dispatched, it's still a bad situation numberwise.

True.

After thinking about it for a while though, I'm leaning towards Vulture not working either, since it would essentially be "two flying bad guys" and I'd assume they'd want to keep stuff fairly original.

If they're going to do the Shocker, they may as well do Electro instead, since a running joke in the comics is always about Shocker being a cheap imitation.

...although Shocker's costume would look better onscreen.

Its hard to add much more to this than what has already been said, but this is definitely going to be the biggest movie of the year. I'm obviously biased being a huge Marvel, and specifically Spidey, mark but damn was this movie awesome.
The action scenes blow the first movie's out of the water and while I was left wanting more Spider action, what I got was amazing. Also getting to see Harry not only find out Pete is Spider-Man but also discover his dad's secret Goblin room made the movie for me.
Am I the only one who thinks Alfred Molina, if trimmed up and given a goatee and mustache, would make a perfect Kraven?
Anyhoo, this movie rocked 18 different kinds of ass so go see it.

A bunch of us were discussing this at work today: If they're gonna do Spidey vs. Goblin II in Spidey 3, they have to add more stuff in to differentiate it from the first film. How? A bounty on Spidey's head. Harry could put up a million bucks to whoever kills Spidey (while training to be Goblin), then once Spidey survives the onslaught of B-villains, it's time for the main event!

As usual, spoilers ahead:

It would make perfect sense both ways, whether Harry takes the Goblin mantle or not. Obviously, Harry could take up his father's costume and weaponry. However, keep in mind that Harry emphatically REJECTED his father's call to avenge him. His discovery of the Goblin materials could open his eyes that "My father was a murderer and I have no desire to follow this path". It would make sense. In fact, most of Spidey 3 could consist of Dafoe calling out to Harry to carry the Goblin name. I'd actually expect Green Goblin II for Spidey 4.

As for Spidey 3's main villain, I'd venture a guess for the Lizard, as Connors got some good screen time here. A quick half-hour origin story and we have ourselves a villain. I genuinely believe that Lizard has enough backstory and angst to carry the role of main villain for 2 hours.

But just in case he doesn't, maybe toss in Scorpion for kicks.

I saw the movie tonight, and as expected it was very well done.

Pertaining to the conversation of "where do they go from here," I don't think there should be any B Villains at all. One of the things that made the first Batman movie so successful was the struggle between one hero and one villain. What made its predecessors weaker (although Batman Returns is a little underrated) is that there came to be an unwritten rule that two or more supervillains are required in order to make a movie successful. It didn't work in the Batman sequels, it didn't work in Daredevil, and I don't think it would work in a Spider-Man movie. Focus on one villain at a time.

I agree with other posters that it'd probably be better for them to build the second Goblin in the third movie for a showdown in the fourth, however I don't know about using The Lizard. It'd make for a fascinating story, but having three consecutive films in a series where the villain is a well-meaning man turned evil by a "laboratory experiment" may be a bit much.

Oh, and HUGE props to J.K. Simmons, who rocked it HARD as J. Jonah Jameson. I can't envision anyone else being more as the character than him.

Yeah but damn near every A level villain not named Magneto in the MU was a well meaning scientist gone tragically wrong. Certainly all of Spidey's A listers from the Stan Lee age were.

Also, I don't like villain team ups. But this isn't throwing more bad guys in to sell toys. There was a reason the Sinister Six formed: They were damn sick and tired of getting their asses handed to them by a smart aleck twerp who twirled, cracked wise, and yet someone punched REAAAAAL fekkin hard.

Could Penguin, Riddler, Two Face, and Freeze carry their own movies? Yeah. But Rhino, God love him, ain't gonna.

That being said, hell just make it Scorpion.

I'm wondering now if Maguire is going to sign on for Spidey 3. He almost didn't even do the second one due to back problems. If he drops out, it is going to be a bitch to get someone who can even come close to him. I hope he'll stick around for a third one, then they drop it. That cast is perfect, if they have to screw around with it, no good can happen.

Coming from a fan of comics and the first two movies, having all of part 3 dedicated to building up Harry as GGII for part 4 isn't a bad idea. But the general public is probably going to be pretty annoyed if they don't have Harry doing SOMETHING in the third one other than staring at a mask wondering what he's supposed to do for two hours before he comes to a decision.

One thing I didn't mention before...it's nice to see they gave part 2 the length it needed (2:07) instead of sticking to a rock-solid "it MUST be under 110 minutes" or something similar that a lot of other similar movies might have fallen victim to.

Maguire's already signed, sealed and delivered for part three.

Once upon a time in China, some believe, around the year one double-ought three, head priest of the White Lotus Clan, Pai Mei was walking down the road, contemplating whatever it is that a man of Pai Mei's infinite power contemplates - which is another way of saying "who knows" - when a Shaolin monk appeared, traveling in the opposite direction. As the monk and the priest crossed paths, Pai Mei, in a practically unfathomable display of generosity, gave the monk the slightest of nods. The nod was not returned. Now was it the intention of the Shaolin monk to insult Pai Mei or did he just fail to see the generous social gesture? The motives of the monk remain unknown. What is known, are the consequences. The next morning Pai Mei appeared at the Shaolin Temple and demanded of the Temple's head abbot that he offer Pai Mei his neck to repay the insult. The Abbot at first tried to console Pai Mei, only to find Pai Mei was inconsolable. So began the massacre of the Shaolin Temple and all 60 of the monks inside at the fists of the White Lotus. And so began the legend of Pai Mei's five point palm exploding heart technique.

Indeed. The only reason that he may not have been in the second one is, as KaneRobot pointed out, because of numerous back problems he had. It wasn't so much that Raimi didn't want him, or that he could've pulled out of the contract. Raimi contacted Toby's people with what the role would involve physically, and Raimi almost went with Gyllenhall instead after he found out that Maguire couldn't get medical clearance for the shoot. Maguire was incredibly upset, but luckily his back healed up quicker than anticipated. So basically, the reasons were mostly medical. There was other stuff involving money, but that was miscommunication due to Raimi and Maguire not meeting in person (they eventually did and everything was cleared up).

I think the only real question mark is Kirsten Dunst. Some are saying that she's somewhat on the fence about the third installment, and it's almost a given that she won't go beyond that. Maguire on the other hand is really enthusiastic about the role, and doesn't mind being known as "the guy who plays Spider-Man."

Franco's pretty much a given to return. Same with Raimi directing, who has said he'll definitely do a third and, depending on how well it comes out and/or performs at the box office, he'll do the fourth movie as well.

HOPEFULLY J.K. Simmons will return as J. Jonah Jameson. As good as the movie was, he provided a Hell of a lot of comic relief and was a good anchor in the film (hard to believe this is the same guy who played the evil and depressing Verne Schillinger character in Oz).

Back to villains, now that I think about it, it wouldn't surprise me one bit to see them try to make Jameson's son into a villain. That look on his face at the end of the movie just screamed "Parker must die."

I still prefer Lt. Col. Blake to Col. Potter.
