Originally posted by Richard Sandomir in the 6/24/04 New York TimesIf Kal Patel is right, a professional cricket league in the United States is the next logical step in the sport's global growth. But not traditional cricket where matches take five days, or even one-day affairs that last seven to nine hours.
No, Patel, commissioner of the newly created American Pro Cricket, believes that sports fans, not just expatriate or visiting Indians, Pakistanis, New Zealanders, West Indians, South Africans, British and Australians, will embrace speedy three-hour cricket (with its own version of the designated hitter, which might rankle the five-day purists) as well as the presence of 40 international stars, including Ajay Jadeja, batsman and Bollywood star, who will be sprinkled among the teams.
Your teams are: Chicago Tornadoes DC Forward Florida Thunder Jersey Fire Los Angeles Unity New York Storm San Francisco Freedom Texas Arrow Heads
I may have to go check this out. This is unreal...

For decades, American had waged a Cold War, and few believed it could possibly end in our own lifetimes. The president was one of those few. And it was the vision and the will of Ronald Reagan that gave hope to the oppressed, shamed the oppressors and ended an evil empire . . . Ronald Reagan was more than a historic figure. He was a providential man who came along just when our nation and the world most needed him.
Fellow Americans, here lies a graceful and a gallant man. - Dick Cheney, 6/9/2004
Reagan had a rare and prized gift called leadership, that ineffable and sometimes magical quality that sets some men and women apart so that millions will follow them as they conjure up grand visions and invite their countrymen to dream big and exciting dreams.-Brian Mulroney, 6/11/2004
I say if you came correct, you could do it. But you've got to make it unique. Nobody's going to watch Baseball-light. A real Cricket league with One-day matches (NOT the traditional ones - that's too much) could work if marketed differently.
Regardless of the style, it's a huge mistake not to start with the expatriots. NOBODY watches a sport where they don't know the rules, and in something as complicated as cricket, the only way to really know how it works is to watch the game with someone who does - I.e. the expatriot crowd. Start with them and count on them to spread the work to others.
I wonder how much money George W. Bush gave Paris Hilton.
It's a good idea, with good foundations, but the thought that I'll only see this stuff while channel surfing around 3 in the morning on ESPN: Obscure kinda brings it back down.
Hell, MLS is only advertised on TV around here on HTS, Hometown Sports, which is usually too busy covering the 0's, Wizards, and Caps, all of which get more airtime than any soccer, and the DC United is the most recent DC team to have actually won a damn championship.
Fire, Tornado(e)s, Thunder, Storm -- that'll be the Disaster Division. Freedom, Unity & Forward -- that'll be the Happiness Division. And Arrow Heads is just weird.

That's a blast from the past; it hasn't been HTS(Home Team Sports, not Town) since I think Spring 2001 when Comcast bought it...

Yeah, because everyone knows that all cricket needs in America is a professional league. Then, by God, people will watch that instead of football, baseball, basketball, hockey or watching paint dry!

Looks at hockey ratings: I think you need to put watching paint dry above hockey on the list. I'm still waiting for the American Professional Australian Rules Football League. Now that would draw in people.

Looks like Keifer is the only full-time cast member returning to the show next season. I, myself, like this idea, as it appears the show could be headed in a new direction and remain fresh. http://www.eonline.com/News/Items/0,1,14547,00.html
