I had thought of something similar to this. I was wondering if there was a way to show the last thread title when you mouse over the <'s to either jump the the oldest thread with a new post or to mark that forum read. Is this possible?
edit: Unless of course this is prone to the same problem that CRZ mentioned in the post that I hadn't read before I posted.

In the context of baseball, the use of drugs hurts only the player. In the context of baseball, the use of alcohol hurts only the player. In the context of baseball, womanizing hurts whom? Maybe the wife of the player? In the context of baseball, felonies are crimes against society, not against baseball. In the context of baseball, gambling is the only crime against baseball.
Gambling, in the context of baseball, is a capital offense and Rose has richly earned-- hell, he agreed to-- his death sentence. Let him hang.

Possible, yes, but I'll probably leave the tooltips in place there because that might be unnecessarily confusing otherwise. Also, I want to keep the index page load time down. Besides, with quick links enabled (and assuming you've marked the forum read at some point) you can always just click on the "# new" link in the threads box to get a list of only the threads with new posts.
Any chance you could cut it down to only thirty or so lines of text? My computer is freaking out every time I mouse over Feely's Top Forty.

Pat Tillman, rest in peace.
"It's almost as if they waited for him to die so he couldn't go ... `Shut the fuck up, that's not what I think!' " -Jon Stewart commenting on the sudden wealth of questions such as "Would President Reagan approve of the war in Iraq?" being posed by conservative pundits.

To expound upon Jaguar's utmost respect, how do you turn this feature THE FUCK OFF?!?!?!

Another how do you turn it off request from the peanut gallery.
Folk singers are always liberal pansies, but not me.....I sing for my fellow conservatives...care to hear "Shoot the Hippie out of the Redwood Tree" ?
I've put a Q'N'D fix in for IE users. It's now limited to 300 characters of the first post. The down side is that unlike in Mozilla, you don't get an elipses at the end, it just cuts off the at character 300.
I'll see if I can get the spoiler stuff later - I don't think I can though.
Willful ignorance of science is not commendable. Refusing to learn the difference between a credible source and a shill is criminally stupid.

I've moved it down to 80 chars which is all I got in Netscape. (People use IE? ;-) )
I've also altered the script to take out text surrounded by [spoiler] tags, so be a good neighbour and USE SPOILER TAGS AROUND YOUR SPOILERS.
If you still think this is a pain in the ass and want it removed, let me know...
I hardly ever use the forum pages anyway, because I'm always just clicking on the "new posts" links, but then, I HAVE to read everything. :)
Any chance of doing that same thing you did with the flags which makes the text appear in the status bar in Opera so I can turn Tool Tips back the hell off?

I think it's perfected with the 80-character add-on and the "spoiler text" message.
It's a very nice feature for those of us who only get to look at the forum once or twice a day (or less frequently than that on some occassions).
When there are 20 new threads in the wrestling forum that are somewhat ambiguously labeled, it's a great feature to just mouse-over the thread title and get a little more info. And with the shortened text capacity it doesn't (a) take forever to load or (b) look terrible.

In the Edit Profile page, there is now an option to turn the tooltips off.
