Here's an article in which Colts owner Jim Irsay mentions that 50,000 season tickets would be “appropriate” for a team of the Colts' caliber.

It could just be my relocation paranoia speaking here... but it seems like everything Irsay says has an implied “or else” at the end of it. “We're gonna sell 50,000 season tickets, or else.”

It's probably just me being paranoid, but I've certainly got good reason to be. As for me, I don't make nearly enough money to be a season-ticket holder... some of us have to, you know, work for a living. But I buy the T-shirts and caps, so back off, man.

Even if I had enough money to be a season ticket holder, I refuse to open negotiations with someone pointing a metaphorical gun at my head.

$886.

Isn't that enough, on a annual basis, to ensure that your team will never leave? That's what I pay for a pair of seats to Lambeau. Tack on the amount of the "Seat License" ($1200 per seat -- good for ten years) or whatever they called it a few years back, too.

Eke - see you in Indy this September. I'll be making my first ever road trip to see the Packers take on your Indianaplis Colts.

An Irsay move a team out of town in the dead of night if he doesn't get his way? Unbelievable. By the way, anyone know what Mayflower's current Indy to L.A. rate is?

How many season tickets does the average NFL team sell, anyway? I know that for really dedicated fans like Cheeseheads that season tickets are basically a generational birthright, but 50,000 seems like kind of a high number for your average-market NFL team (which I think we can agree that the Colts are).

Bingo.

This is the beginning of the end in Indianapolis. Bob Irsay flirted with Jacksonville for five years, bitching about season ticket sales and what not, before bolting for Indianapolis.

Of course, Los Angeles Colts sounds just as bad as Indianapolis Colts.

God Bless Ronald Reagan, and may he rest in peace...

* * * * * * *

For decades, American had waged a Cold War, and few believed it could possibly end in our own lifetimes. The president was one of those few. And it was the vision and the will of Ronald Reagan that gave hope to the oppressed, shamed the oppressors and ended an evil empire . . . Ronald Reagan was more than a historic figure. He was a providential man who came along just when our nation and the world most needed him.

Fellow Americans, here lies a graceful and a gallant man.
- Dick Cheney, 6/9/2004

Reagan had a rare and prized gift called leadership, that ineffable and sometimes magical quality that sets some men and women apart so that millions will follow them as they conjure up grand visions and invite their countrymen to dream big and exciting dreams.-Brian Mulroney, 6/11/2004

Well, part of me hopes you guys are wrong, part of me hopes you're right. I love the Colts to death-- I practically bleed blue-and-white during the football season-- but I'm tired of being threatened.

Sec19... with all due respect, that's easy for you to say. The Packers will never leave Green Bay, because they're literally owned by the fans of Green Bay. The Packers are the one small-market team that's forever safe from relocation. I certainly can't say the same for teams like the Colts, Cardinals and Chargers.

Besides, if I got season tickets for myself, I'd have to get some for the rest of my family as well. So multiply $883 times three. Sure, if I wanted to consist on a diet of ramen noodles and, instead of using a heating system, simply get a shitloada blankets together... it could work. But $2600 is damn near nine paychecks for me, working at Blockbuster 30-35 hours a week. My mother makes far more than that, but...

How do I support the team? Man does not live by ticket sales alone, but by every hat, T-shirt and jersey purchased by a fan. I also go to sports bars and cheer my lungs out for my beloved Colts. If that ain't enough for Irsay, than he can stick it.

[shows up the next week in the rafters, with black-and-white facepaint and a crow on my shoulder]...

Isn't Indy one of (if not the) smallest markets for pro sports as far as viewership goes? Irsay can't be that stupid. He's finally building a successful franchise in Indianapolis.

Eko, I feel for you man. I don't know what I'd do if the Titans pulled stakes and headed out of town and they haven't even been here a long time.

Not to jump into any conclusions, but if the Colts do bolt for LA, how would that affect realignment? I suppose they could remain in the AFC South since they'd be in SoCal.

They could have the Chiefs and Colts trade divisions. That would kill the KC/Raiders rivalry though.

I wondered that too, but hey, I wouldn't really consider Indy "south" anyway.

The Chiefs could always go to the Central, the Steelers to the North and the Dolphins to the South ... but that's fucking up a lot of long-standing divisional rivalries.

I don't think they would ever move the fins out of the AFC East. My guess is that they would leave everything the way it is and let them stay in the AFC South. If they really wanted to change things up they COULD switch leagues with the Rams.

If you get ultra-technical, the Colts are the old L.A. Rams before they had the charter transfer between the Colts and Rams in the 70's. Of course, using that line of thinking, Bill Russell won 11 NBA Titles for the L.A. Clippers, as the Celtics and Buffalo Braves had a charter transfer in the late 70's as well.

Understood - but $886 gets me two season tickets. The kids don't go to the games, just my wife and I.

As for supporting the team? Remember to purchase your Colts stuff from THEIR store (if they have one). Anything that you buy at the local department store counts toward shared revenue, and the Colts only get 1/32 of it. If I buy a Packer hat at the local WalMart, the Colts get as much of the proceeds as the Packers do. If, on the other hand, you buy merchandise directly from the team -- they get all the revenue..

I wish you luck. I've only known the loss of the Milwaukee Mustangs; I can't imagine the loss of an NFL team.
