After reading the uninspiring SD! spoilers, I caught last night's new episode of Celebrity Poker. The table consisted of James Woods, Danny Masterson (the guy who needs a shave on That 70s Show), Dule Hill (Charlie the aide from West Wing), the clean-shaven Timothy Busfield (also from West Wing) and comedianne Mo Gaffney.

I'm not digging Dave Foley as the host. I like the guy's work in Kids in the Hall and NewsRadio, but this gig ain't working for me. I prefer Kevin Pollack, a guy who knew the game quite well and hosted last year. He had a better rapport with poker expert Phil Gordon and they could converse without detialing the basics of poker play. With Dave, Phil has to explicate much more and that makes him talk down to him and the TV audience.

Dule Hill is one of those guys (much like Evil Willie last season and Nichole Sheridan's flop knockout blow in the season finale) who got magic hands. He quickly controlled the table's chips and a one point lead with $21,000 vs. the closest contenders $9,000+. He professed to have only played for two weeks, making his incredible streak that much more painful to watch.

Mo and Busfield were never in it, frittering away a great deal of money by calling and folding. Mo was easily the most entertaining player and the crowd lamented her departure, the game's first. She went all in with a pair of queens and was 86'd by Dule building off an intitial off-suit 5-6 hand. Busfield was the walking wounded after just a few hands and Dule mercifully put him away.

James Woods, the much-hyped expert, couldn't get a rhythm going, even tossing a pocket A-J tandem. Danny did the same, chucking an encouraging suited 5-6 deal. But though James patiently played the hands and caught a very lucky last card on the river to stymie Dule, he couldn't build momentum and left the game for Danny to try to unseat Dule.

Danny is a great poker player. Good deals, great betting, a no-frills style and casual attitude. He won me over. And Dule encouraged me to root against him by callously looking to the crowd to decide his tactics. This is funny when you are behind in the chips. When you are easily in command, it disrespects the other player, and Danny was noticablely irked. So it was to much joy that he rallied to snag significant chips away from Dule late before Dule's voodoo kicked in again.

This season features a nice tough called "How Would You Play It." The audience is shown only one player's hand and asked to guess if he's playing well as he reacts to the others. The hand they do this with is the one where Dule got cocky, bet large and Danny ate his lunch with trips Aces.

I really like this show, and this was a good episode. Moreover, it has me rooting against Dule in the championship round. That incredible luck simply can't carry over to a new game. Can it?

Mo Gaffney was fun, but she didn't own the table personality-wise like Wanda Sykes did in Week 1. (And this coming from someone who doesn't like Wanda Sykes). Right now Dule is the early-on favorite, since Rosario Dawson essentially won via fluke.

Bravo is listing not only the competitors left in this tournament, but the ones that are in July's tournament too.

Next week:
Michael Ian Black (Ed, The State)
Star Jones (The View)
Norm McDonald (Meet Stan Hooper)
Adam Rodriguez (CSI: Miami)
Jeremy Sisto (6 Feet Under)

June 17
Sean Astin (LotR, Jeremiah)
Lauren Graham (Gilmore Girl)
Chris Masterson (Malcolm in the Middle) [avenging his bro?]
Matthew Perry (Friends)
Sara Rue (Less Than Perfect)

June 24
James Blake (Tennis)
Jon Favreau (Swingers)
Andy Richter (Conan O'Brien, Andy Richter Controls...)
Tom Everett Scott (That Thing You Do)
Maura Tierney (Newsradio, ER)

Willie Garson and David Cross return in the third tournament.

And I for one prefer Dave Foley (who's not aging well, BTW) to Kevin Pollak. Foley isn't trying to dominate the show like Pollak did. This season relies more on the interplay at the table than the interplay between the hosts.

Oh. My. God.

July 22nd: Peter Facinelli vs. The Cast of Arrested Development (Will Arnett, Jason Bateman, David Cross, and Judy Greer).

Poor guy.

That's guaranteed to be the funniest episode of the run. Too bad they couldn't put Amy Poehler in THAT game, but I suppose Bravo has a rule about married couples playing in the same game. Hence Facinelli being separated from Jennie Garth as well.

Hey, each of those lineups in June contain a player connected to NewsRadio (Norm was Jimmy's lawyer in a few episodes, Lauren Graham was the efficiency expert, and Maura was the lovely Lisa Miller).

As for the much-hyped person to go all in and lose on the first hand, my 1-5 odds are on Star Jones.

I'm hyped about season three; Ron Livingston is BACK, baby! Maybe he'll see a hypnotist before-hand and come to the table to gut a fish. Too bad there's no Gary Cole in the tourney.

My guess was Michael Ian Black. I couldn't have been more wrong as he won this week's never-ending duel with Norm McDonald. In the last 20 minutes, the blinds were 5k/10k, and they were exchanging the chiplead every other hand.

As it turns out, it was Andy Rodriguez serving as the Scott Stapp of this tournament. He had no clue what he was doing and was snookered in the first hand by Norm.

I'd have been surprised to see Black go all in first hand given how tight he played last season. Missed this week's show, now Im curious to see one of the many replays.

And I'm another one that can't stand Foley. Especially during showdowns, with Gordon listing the outs and Foley saying "That's not a (insert out here)" in response to the cards on 4th and 5th street.

I hate to say it, but Foley gained some respect with me with this last show; he did seem better than the weeks before.

The "you prematurely ejaculated your chips all over Norm MacDonald" line is CLASSIC~!

Ok, caught the show at some odd hour early morning. Yeah, Foley was funnier, but I'm chalking that up to him finally having a vague understanding of what's going on around him.
You ever read Ziggy, or Dagwood, or any of those old comic strips that show a computer monitor with a sick face and perhaps an ice pack, and another character saying "I'm sorry, your PC has a virus"? Yuck Yuck. That's how Foley comes off to me when he says along of the lines of "It's stealing the blinds, not stealing from the blind"

I didn't care for his comments of "Maybe we should lower the table slowly into a pool of sharks" went the game went heads up. If, on the other hand, he had mentioned that they needed to play looser as the size of the blinds went up, it would have been fine.

Although, that's suppose to be Phil's job, I guess. Don't recell if he mentioned it or not.

Enjoyed the 'All In A-thon' down the stretch between McDonald/Black. How Norm blew that big a chip lead at the end showed he didn't know how to throw the knock-out punch. I thought 1 hour regular episode/2 hour championship had a better flow than just a 2 hour episode.

I liked Foley's smarmy commercial outros, but those were probably scripted.

Norm no-selling a lot of Black's comedy was really funny. As was the whole David Copperfield schtick.

I don't think it was Norm not knowing how to throw a knockout punch -- he seemed disinterested, IMO.

I wouldn't say disinterested, just very very tight. Didn't seem that he was willing to play more hands as fewer people were at the table and as the blinds went up. And he seemed unwilling to play anything that had a remote chance of doubling Black up.

Anyone remember how he played on the World Poker Tour? I can't recall if he was tight there as well.

And so we leave week 3.

Order of elimination

Sean Astin
Poor Sam Gamgee was just simply awful

Sara Rue
She provided most of the entertainment of the show with her interaction with Lauren Graham

Matthew Perry
Matt was just never in the game.

Chris Masterson
Chris started off strong, but petered out.

Leaving the winner...

Lauren Graham
Lauren & Sara brought the fun of the show. This one was a lot better than last week.

Lauren actually played a pretty decent game. It was obvious that she had been trained by Gordon, because her game, especially once she got a bit of a stack, was almost a carbon copy of his. Thankfully she was playing Chris Masterson instead of Juha Hellpi like poor Phil got stuck doing in the WPT Aruba event, so he actually folded to pre-flop raises from the big stack.
