The Sports Guy on OJ (sports.espn.go.com)

I guess its kind of a good thing but in the all the Hoopla surrounding Reagan's death people forgot about the 10 year anniversary of the OJ murders. Simmons writes one of the best articles Ive seen on the whole event. Hes really on a roll since he left Kimmel.

But he captures just the way I felt when it all started. I remember sitting in my Moms living room watching game 5 with my friend Melvin when they cut over to the chase. I can remember thinking that OJ may blow his brains out on national TV. I was thinking that there's no way OJ Simpson would murder his wife, this the LA PD trying to frame another rich black man. Maybe the mob was after OJ for an old gambling debt and was framing him. This was mostly an extension of my believing that gambling debt was the reason Jordan had retired 8 months earlier after his dad was murdered. yeah I was a nutty kid.

The really strange thing was to me was how decided people were over this. All the black people I knew including my family though OJ was innocent. All the white people I knew thought he was guilty.

I didn't really follow the trial itself, in May of 1995 I joined the Navy and left for Boot Camp, where I was pretty much isolated from TV for two months. After Boot Camp I went to Communications school in San Diego. Still I was too busy to really follow what was happening. It was talked about among all of us and still you could see the racial lines. The blacks believed he was innocent and being framed and the whites believed he was guilty. It didn't really matter what was being said during the trial either. And when the Verdict came back, I was shocked they actually stopped school and set up TVs in each of the Classrooms so we could watch it. I remember when they read the verdict I burst into laughter, A girl (she was white) in the class angrily told me to shut up. I could hear cheers from some of the other classes. And the split was right down racial lines. All the blacks were happy, high fiving each other, smiling like we had won something. Alot the whites were just stunned, shaking their heads, my instructor just said "what a bunch of bullshit" and was in a sour mood for the rest of the day.

For me I don't think I was necessarily happy for OJ or because the "white man couldn't frame a black man". I believed at the end the same thing I do now. That the same bullshit system that let the Rodney King cops walk let OJ walk. Even now a lot of black people I know snicker and say they know OJ got away with murder, but they are still happy that the system worked for us for once.

I'm just glad all the white people didn't start to riot.

Fuck OJ, he deserves to be sliced up the way he sliced up two innocent people.

He has the fucking nerve to insinuate that the Goldman family was happy their son died because now they can be famous.

OJ was a piece of shit before he murdered two people, and he's an even bigger piece of shit now.

OJ really hasn't done a good job of making any fans lately. His bashing of the Goldman family was just awful. I'm sure that Fred Goldman would rather his son back than the money that OJ owes him.

OJ saying that he was mad at his wife for leaving him with his kids is another reason he's a piece of shit. He basically inferred that she did something wrong and that's why she was killed. Even if he's innocent, like he says that he is, why not be mad at the real killers for cutting off her head?

His poor kids are going to be so messed up later on in life, and he's going to keep playing golf and pretending that most of the world doesn't hate him. There was no way he could have recovered from the murder trial in a positive way, but he keeps digging that hole for himself deeper and deeper.

So if a guilty white person goes free, then the system has worked for me?

And if a guilty black person goes free, the system has worked for you?

Glad you aspire to such heights of justice.

Also, as far as Rodney King, the guy's a dirtbag. He had high levels of PCP in his system. Whether the use of force was excessive or not I don't care to debate; use of force was certainly merited.

Did I miss something, or was it stated in OJ's interview that he still hasn't paid the Goldmans the money he was ordered to pay them in civil court? Isn't he OBLIGATED to pay them?

I believe he was obligated to pay them half of his future earnings, what Nicole was going to get. However, OJ doesn't earn any money. All his football money is off in some bank accounts where they can't get at it.

I dont think I was aspiring to anything. Im just trying to bring across to you how some people I know felt about the OJ trial and the Justice system in general.

And Im not saying that Rodney King is some kind of saint. Sures hes a dirtbag, but does that mean that the police have the right to brutalize him? No, the police are supposed to enforce the law and protect the rights of citizens at all times right?

I dont know how anyone could watch that King video and not think it was police brutality. Do we think diffrently because Im black and youre white? I dont know but it seems that way sometimes.

Then again no reason trying to use logic with someone who has a Reagan avatar.

I am a minority, and from the evidence I concluded OJ was guilty and a certified cocksucker. I hate the way people turned it into a Us Vs Him. I also didnt like the way the media saintfied Nicole and Ron. From the evidence they both where douches but did not deserve to die. O.J. is not the first criminal to get away with a crime.

rockdotcom - I'm glad I re-read your post this morning, and read the column as well. I totally agree with your opinion that the column was an excellent piece of writing - Sports Guy really summed the whole thing up well. Tied in with the description of your experience, it really gave me insight into a perspective I would not otherwise have been exposed to. Now I feel I can better understand why there was such a divide down racial lines at the time.

However, I am curious how you feel in hindsight. Do two wrongs really make a right (re: King and OJ)? Now that it is ten years later, do you feel that anything has really changed in the justice system? If a similar instance occurred today, do you feel that a racially balanced and fair trial can be held, or is it still a predominately "white" system that has an automatic bias against minorities?

According to the U.S. Judicial System, OJ Simpson never stabbed anybody, as he was tried, and acquitted. Thus, my judicial system says that he is innocent, and did not kill two people.

Also according to the U.S. Judicial System, OJ Simpson was wholely responsible for the deaths of two people, as he was found liable in a civil suit over the crime he was acquitted of.

Given the decisive manner in which the legal system has come into play here, I feel it's time to question Ron Goldman and Nicole Brown's innocense. What exactly were they innocent of?

To be clear, OJ was found "not guilty" in a court of criminal law. That is in no way the same as innocent. He was found guilty of the crime in a civil court where the standards of evidence aren't as strigent.

With respect to clarification, OJ was found liable for tortious acts in civil court, not guilty of crimes. He was found to have committed battery upon his ex-wife Ms. Brown and to have battered and caused the death of Mr. Goldman. The legal test in such a court is based upon the balance of probabilities (i.e. what is most likely to have happened). This is, as Dr. Dirt points out, a lower evidentiary standard than criminal court, in which the test is proof beyond a reasonable doubt.

I have a question about the Bronco chase. The chase was broadcast during an NBA finals game between the Rockets and Knicks. I believe the chase was shown at the game on the big scoreboards, but I could have sworn the game was stopped so everyone could watch. But that doesn't sound kosher -- stopping a game outright for reasons not directly affecting the game.

I think that's a faulty memory, and I'm looking for confirmation.

It was during the Knicks-Rockets final but they did not stop the game during the chase. NBC cut away to the chase and had the game in a box in the corner. Supposedly more than half the crowd at MSG headed for the hallway to watch the chase at the refreshment stand TVs

If there is anyone to blame in OJ's innocent verdict, it's the LAPD - which has a rather consistent reputation of corruption.

Whether OJ is innocent or guilty is really up to whether you think the evidence is legit or not... and I have a very difficult time believing there wasn't some "mishandling" going on behind the scenes.

Thanks for the kind words

TO answer your question, No, two wrongs do not make a right. OJ Simpson deserves to be in prison, just as the police officers in the King Case deserved to in prison. I dont know what went on in the Jury room. I dont know what they were thinking, or what they discussed. I do know that there is a distrust and fear of the Police and the justice system among many black people. Especially in those days just three years after the King trial. The King trial hurt and shocked alot of blacks. We had been complaining for years about brutality and mistreatment from cops, then we have undisputable proof of abuse and still a white jury doesnt see it that way. I was legitemately scared of cops after that. I was thinking "Man these guys CAN get away with anything." It didnt help growing up in the south with a Mom that was suing our hometown Police for Sexual Harrasment. So people are angry and you saw how that manifested itself in LA with the rioting. Do you think that wasnt in the mind of the mostly black OJ jury? Especially after the prosecution thoroughly fucked up the case?

to answer your second, I dont think the justice system has really changed that much. This is a different time. Juries are imperfect by nature. If OJ were tried today he probably wouldnt stand a chance. Sports guy summed it up with his CSI reference. Plus relations have improved somewhat with cops and the black community. Plus people are more aware of the dark side of celebrities I think. Especially athletes.

I dont know really about how things have really changed, but Im very interested in seeing how Kobes trial plays out. I honestly believe Kobe is going to prison. Just a feeling I have. I dont know if it will polarize people on a racial level the way OJs trial did, but its possible. But I just dont give Kobe a shot in a small town Colorado court.

To be the vocal minority (as well as the racial minority)...

I heard a theory by William C.Dear that stated (paraphrase), "If OJ didn't do it, then who did?" The detective (from Dallas) thought it might be OJ's oldest son.

Jason has had a history of minor violence(and speculated mental issues), was big and strong enough to commit the murder, was a chef (good with knives), and might have been upset at Nicole because at the time of the murder she was suppose to go visit him at his new job (chef) at some hoity-toity restaurant.

Some think that he may have been upset about Nicole not showing up, went to find her after his shift, found her in Daddy's house with another man, went ballistic and killed them both.

This is just what I remember from a radio interview a while ago.

But, as Leroy has already pointed out, the LAPD dropped the ball and didn't even consider the son as a suspect nor question him.

Just a theory.

This makes me feel old. We were at my graduation party from high school that night. We all stopped drinking and partying to squat down in front of a little tv to watch the chase.
