Me & Mrs. Freeze went to the STAPLES CENTER last night & watched the game on the big screen. During the break between the 1st & 2nd quarters, 3 hoochie mamas showed up with a TON of concession stand food (nachos, hot dogs, beer, churros, etc), sat down next to me, and proceeded to YELL AT EACH OTHER ABOUT EVERYTHING UNDER THE SUN OTHER THAN THE ACTUAL GAME THEY PAID TO WATCH. They were discussing real estate, giving each other make-up tips (one of them brought a make-up case), talking trash about a 4th hoochie who apparently flaked on the trip to STAPLES, you name it.
Real hoochie quotes from last night:
"Fuck Los Angeles, I'm moving back to Bakersfield after my baby have his party. This is some bull shit up in here."
"Girl, swear to God I would Fuck the shit out of some Derek Fisher!"
"Them other fools (Pistons) be makin' all they shots to motherfuckin' much."
The only time they weren't talking during the whole game was when they'd all stop what they were doing, turn and look at me like *I* was crazy when I would get up & cheer.
TRASH.
Oh..
Originally posted by KaneRobotShaq is pathetic with his little "we let this get away" and whining about the referee calls. Bullshit. The Pistons dictated the pace of that entire game. They didn't let anything "get away." It was neck and neck until the 4th when the Pistons pulled away.
1: The Lakers DID let this one get away, you said it yourself. It was back & forth until the forth quarter when Detroit took the lead and pulled away.
2: The Pistons either dictated the pace of that entire game, or it was neck & neck until the 4th quarter. It cant be both (I'm leaning more towards "Neck & neck until the 4th").
3: I didn't hear Shaq whining at all about the referees. I saw him at the post-game press conference being asked about the lop-sided-ness of the referee's calls, and I heard Shaq respond by throwing out a couple numbers regarding how lop-sided the FT attempts of each team were, and I heard him explain how hard it is to win against a team who shoots 20 more FT's than you do in a game. But I didn't hear any whining.
4: And finally, there is no one left in the United States who has not yet given the Pistons their well-deserved props. Please calm down already.
I can't believe what I am seeing in this series, although it is a nice surprise - the only downfall being is if that hack Larry Brown gets a ring. *HE* didn't cherry pick, nope. I'm still lock-jawed about B. Wallace not being in a Magic uniform, but that's just sour grapes...
Speaking of another Magic, he took the words right out of my mouth this weekend as far as the way I feel about the piss Malone and Payton are taking on the Lakers franchise. They haven't even bothered to show up - I really thought going into the series that they had more heart than this, but then I realized there may just be a reason both have always been on the losing end of things...
MAGIC JOHNSON SAYS:
"I think the Lakers had a mind-set that was disrespectful to the Pistons. They thought it was going to be easy. That is not the case," Johnson said. "Unless they come out and play very hard, with the same level of intensity as the Pistons, this series will be over."
"I am angry. You have to compete. And we're not competing," he said. "You can just see the Lakers' frustration. No one is welcoming anyone to the bench. Guys are sitting there, wandering off into the crowd, defeated. We've got to get that look off our faces and play basketball the way it's supposed to be played. If not, the series won't get back to Los Angeles."
"I have eight rings and I want nine," Johnson said. "My anger is that we haven't competed in this series. I don't know what's going on. I don't know what the mind-set is. But this is just unacceptable."
"You don't put your finger in a fan's face. That's unacceptable. Lakers don't do that," Johnson said of Malone, who claimed the heckler spat on him. "I don't care what he said. He has been to two Finals. I've been to nine. Do you think the Celtics fans didn't say things I didn't like?
"Gary Payton is 35 years old and isn't the same Gary Payton he was 10 years ago. He has to accept that," Johnson said. "Gary Payton has had a lot of great, wide-open looks and hasn't knocked them down. That doesn't change if you're in the triangle or a 1-4 or what. Wide-open looks are wide-open looks. He shot an airball just the other day, wide-open. Hell, nobody was 10 feet from him.
"He got it, caught it, wide-open, airball. You've got to make that shot. You've got to make plays. Gary's problem isn't on offense. It's on defense. Billups is using him up."
Damn straight and impossible to argue with ...all things considered, I'm rooting for Detroit to take it (keep it) home. As much of an insult their brand of basketball has been to the game itself, they have at least played hard and like they want to win - I'll take that over a bunch of quitters anyday...

Except for the fact that they don't score as consistantly as you'd like to see in a basketball team, I don't agree with calling the way Detroit has played in this finals insulting to the game of basketball. If anything, I WISH more teams would play defense, pass the ball and hustle like this Pistons team does. And that's why they're one game away from an NBA Title right now.
The way L.A. has had players dog it in games, not play defense, NOT hustle (witness Game 3 and their inability or unwillingness to box out for rebounds) and at times play selfishly, I tend to find THAT more insulting.

Are you watching the finals with the sound turned on? I swear to god, Al Michaels is going to break down in tears if the Pistons win game 5.
The Lakers letting it get away and the Pistons pulling away are not really the same thing. If the Lakers were up by 10 points going into the fourth and the Pistons came back to win, that's letting it get away. The game was tight throughout...it was never their game to "let get away" in the first place.

That's one way to look at it. Another way to look at it is to say that since it was neck & neck for the first 3 quarters, it could've gone either way. The game was either team's to win. The 4th quarter came & the Lakers "blinked first", if you will. They fell apart, and the Pistons kept going strong.
Let me be clear here: The Lakers did not let Game 1 "get away". The Lakers did not let Game 3 "get away". Both of those games were well out of reach of the Lakers for the entire time. But Game 4 was right there in their grasp (ditto for the Pistons), they suddenly stopped doing everything they were doing for the first 3 qtrs, the Pistons did not, and the Pistons won.
Oh, and lemme rephrase something here:
"And finally, there is no one left in the United States who is sane and has not yet given the Pistons their well-deserved props. Please calm down already."
Heh. CNNSI.com's Marty Burns is saying that if the Pistons win this series, it'll be the biggest Finals upset in 30 years.
Um... OK. The Pistons were 54-28; the Lakers were 56-26. The Lakers have more experience, sure, but the Pistons have had a couple of relatively deep playoff runs in the last couple years. I wish Burns would settle down, already.
I was away from a computer for a week, so it's kind of funny to sit back and read this thread with the benefit of hindsight. I am as guilty as anyone of saying the Pistons had no chance going into the Finals, and I am glad to see that a team is finally stepping up to beat the the Lakers, as the Blazers (in 2000) and the Kings (in 2002) should have. The Lakers are not that great of a TEAM. They have Shaq and Kobe, so they automatically have the two best players in any series, but after that they get awfully thin, awfully fast. (Slava Medvedenko gets big minutes in the Finals? Puh-leeze.)
Originally posted by MercShaq's "solid" game was 16 of 21 for 36 points and 20 boards. Kobe 8 of 25 for 20 points and 2 assists.
I think for every shot Kobe takes more than Shaq, Shaq should get to shove his Big Diesel Dick up Kobe's ass ten times. Shaq was DOMINATING Game Four, then he stopped getting the ball. Kobe is proving to be more like Dominique Wilkins than Michael Jordan, at least in this series. I only wish I could hear Bill Walton's thoughts on Kobe. The Pistons have nothing for Shaq, but the Lakers don't get him the ball enough.

I think the Lakers had their complete lineup for only 25 games or so. Their record would've been better if they hadn't had so many injuries. The Pistons will be the first team in 25 years to win the title without a "superstar". That's good enough for me.
Also, if the Pistons DON'T win Game Five, how nervous will the Pistons' fans be?

Originally posted by Packman V2I'm looking forward to this series, but I just don't see anyone able to stop Shaq and Kobe. Ben is good, but I just can't see him hanging with ShaqFu for 7 games. I definitely want it to go 7, although fully knowing the sooner the season ends, the sooner the offseason can begin...and see who ends up where.
Go Pistons, but Lakers are gonna win. Dammit!
WTF was I thinking?
Well, if the Pistons win out tonight...I'll be very glad I was wrong.
As a life long Lakers' fan, the only team I could decide to rout for since football and baseball were decided for me in the womb, I'm pissed. I'm piseed at Kobe for getting himself in a situation that has shown more spotlight on himself than the series and also tarnishing the Lakers'as a whole. I'm pissed no one can play defense on this team. I'm also pissed we waisted our money on Malone and Payton when Rasheed was a good trade away.
I love Magic and totally agree with everything he said. The Lakers don't want it, so go Pistons. If you think this team is coming back next year, oh are you in for a shock. Some of them may have big money contracts, but they won't be sticking around, I'm looking at you Malone, you cheapshot choking piece of garbage. Back your bags, Kobe, your traded!
One small thing: It's probably too late to trade Kobe, as he has the option to opt out of his contract as soon as the season is over, which, could be tomorrow, the way this game is looking.

... My congratulations go out to every one of the Detroit Pistons. They had to play very well to win four games; I didn't think they could do it, but they shocked me with their very sharp offensive play. Every shot they needed to make, they made. And of course, every defensive stop they needed to have, they got easily. It was an outstanding performance. I felt that the Lakers could have played a better series, but the bottom line is that they didn't play like winners and they didn't deserve to win. There are no flukes in a five-game series.
I'm happy for Larry Brown; it might be true that he jumped on a bandwagon of sorts, because the Pistons were already a strong club when he got there. But, Brown took this group over the hump and no one can take that away from him. Brown was a coach out here (with the Clippers in the early 90's), and he did the best job anyone has done with that franchise before or since. It's nice to see good things happen to guys who have put in their time. I'm happy for former Lakers Lindsey Hunter and Elden Campbell.
The Lakers of next year will bear very little (if no) resemblance to this year's team. Perhaps that's a good thing. The turmoil and extracurricular garbage that surrounded this franchise during the season was something I won't miss as a fan. The Lakers had been performing miracles this season just to get to the Finals -- I thought they could produce one last miracle, but they had nothing else left. The Lakers ran into an inspired and fierce opponent, and they were soundly beaten.
The upset is complete and the title is back in the East.
The Lakers are so getting blown up now.
Congratulations and thanks to the Horses for shocking the world. Nuff respect.
EDIT:
Rasheed "The NBA targets young dumb black kids" Wallace has a ring. (the only thing I don't like about this) Darko F'n Milicic has a ring. Chauncey Billups is the Finals MVP. Dayum. Thugs everywhere will now be wearing replicas of Rip's mask.
The NY papers have been making up Knick trades all summer. Considering that's the home base of Peter Vescey, it doesn't surprise me. Yeah I know Spree did get traded but I believe where he eventually ended up (T-Wolves)
