This is not a negative thread but I am curious on your thoughts. There is a move to replace Hamilton on the $10 bill with President Reagan. I understand wanting to honor the man but am not sure this is appropriate. At least don't remove Hamilton, a man who had much to do with the founding of our country and helped insure we didn't go financially belly up before we ever got off the ground. If this has to be done, how about replacing Grant or Jackson instead or a special issue coin? Or how else could he be honored besides already having an airport and aircraft carrier named after him?
They should do what Nancy wants and stop blocking stem cell research. That's a much more important and lasting legacy than putting someone's face on a coin.
I wouldn't mind them bringing back the $2 bill with Ronald Reagan on it.
So many things we buy every day cost between 1-2 dollars (drinks, breakfast, etc...). It would be great to be able to pay with a $2 bill instead of rummaging for singles & change, or being stuck trying to break a $20...

Amen...
Incidentally, they still issue the $2 bill from time to time, but I would rather see President Reagan on the dime or on the $20.
God Bless Ronald Reagan, and may he rest in peace...

I liked the $2 bill but the public just doesn't seem to accept it and I have been in a store that refused to take it. Of course when we were in Europe, I like the one pound coins and such.
Need to add, Reagan was opposed to stem cell research so I don't if he would consider it an honor.

Excuse my threadjacking, but I think OFB may have touched on the issue that has the potential to really splinter the GOP. On the one hand, we have a wing of the party that is actively calling for more stem cell research and is apparently now unwilling to compromise. On the other side, there is a wing of the party that strenuously opposes any sort of fetal or embryonic stem cell research and absolutely will not compromise on the issue. I know that in this part of Michigan, we are starting to see an increase in the amount of Constitution Party material which would seem to indicate that at least some from the GOP are leaving for a more palatable (and conservative) option.
On topic, I'd rather see Reagan on the dime, but that's a purely personal preference based on the fact that I still think the redesigned bills don't look right. Putting a new face on one of the common bills would just confuse too many people and make it way too easy for some really bad counterfeits to circulate as people adjusted.

People who say they don't "play politics" merely play politics badly. -- David Drake
You don't think there are any other dead Presidents that deserve to be on money before Reagan?
People tend to be overly sensitive about these types of things. There was some stamp awhile ago that I remember causing a bunch of controversy. I can't remember which one, maybe the Elvis one?
Imagine switching President's on a bill? I could just see that turning unnecessarily ugly.
One of the things Canada has over the US is that maybe our money isn't worth as much but it looks nicer. :)
I'd like to see Roosevelt taken off the dime, but that is more out of dislike for Roosevelt than for anything else. Hamilton was the Treasury Secretary who helped stabilize currency in the infant days after the coup of '87, so it would be a historical slight. Taking Grant off the 50 probably would play well in some sections of the South, particulary those that still believe that USA stands for Undefeated Southern Army. As for taking Jackson off the 20, Jackson was a lunatic. If ever there was a President who we should all be glad didn't have nuclear weapons, Andy is the man.
I'm uneasy with the idea of a President I was alive to remember being placed on currency, let alone Mt. Rushmore. I realize that it has happened before (JFK on the half dollar is just one example), but I still think that we should be able to wait a little longer when making these types of decisions.
I think the Post Office has a rule that you have to be dead ten years before you can appear on a stamp. That would be a reasonable limitation for portraits on currency as well, IMO. It's already turning funny colors--let's not be hasty.
They can't put Ronnie on Rushmore, because the major tool in mountain sculpture is TNT. The existing faces can't take the concussions. Abe's nose and some other areas of the rock have had major stabilizing operations already. We wouldn't want the whole thing to end up like the Old Man of the Mountain.
But I am not against sculptural or engraved memorials large or small; I'm an artist, and I take commissions no matter who the subject may be. More power to Victorian-style commemorative public artwork.

Bring it back? It never left!
I love to collect them, only because most places don't want them or mistake them for $1's.
I would not be for the redesigning of the $10 so soon, as the JUST redesigned it. Like the good Madam said, 10 years would be a good time if they did it.
Putting him on the $0.50 is just as worthless as having him on the $2. Yeah, there would be the honor of being on currency that no one will see. Yes, I collect $0.50's too. I have a huge collection of pre-1965's of all types. Mostly quarters.
Hey now. Washington is on the $1 and quarter, how about taking him off the quarter when the 50 states deal is done. I hear that DC and some territories are trying to get in on it, but I'd be for the Gipper to be on it. And it's such a common coin that EVERYONE will see it.
EDIT:
If the slang for money is "Dead Presidents" then how about taking Ben Franklin off the $100 and giving it to Reagan?

Better idea than that: How about they dump Susan B. Anthony and that Indian chick that are on the dollar coins for Reagan (or, even better John Adams, the Founding Father that gets royally screwed in terms of currency). Putting someone America has actually heard of/gives a damn about might actually cause the dollar coin to be more than just a joke. The idea of Washington being taken off anything: Not in this lifetime. That's sacred ground. A slight note on part of the funeral: Margaret Thatcher is one tough broad (and I mean that as the highest compliment).
I think the wait ten years thing is good. People are caught in the moment of emotions of a president they liked. Also for many here, the first one they really knew growing up. He was well-liked and had a major impact on politics still felt today but in reality, I am not sure his presidency rises to the level many are giving it. I am not dissing him in any way but to want to raise him to the levels people are currently may be a bit much.

I'm afraid the color's only going to change more the longer it's dead.

Whattayaknow! You hit on the very reasons the two women were put on the coins! Because people should hear about and give a damn about them!
