I refuse to believe that I am the only "W" to have seen Potter on the first day of its release. I finished re-listening to the CD version of the book right before I saw the movie.

I now see why it is very difficult to watch a movie right after finishing the book based on it. I can also see how difficult it is to make a movie that stays somewhat true to the material. What I mean is that after seeing this film, I can easily see how people who haven't read the book could be confused by the playing around with time and generally fast moving plot. Meanwhile I am obviously upset about some of the material from the book that was left out.

All in all though, I was very happy with the movie despite my problems with the script. The movie looks darker, and it still looks great. The acting is miles better, and that's more because Ron doesn't have that many lines this time around (other than the occassional "Brilliant" comment). The guy who plays Lupin is okay, but Gary Oldman is great as Sirius Black. I only wish that the director hadn't decided to foreshadow the rumored Ron and Hermione pairing so heavy-handedly.

This was definitely the best of the three movies, and I'm really looking forward to the fourth movie (because although I'm in the minority, I think the fourth book is miles better than the third one).

Oh, and the fourth movie is scheduled to be released on Nov. 18, 2005 (HEY, that's my birthday...SWEET).

Joe Wilson (looking at Interocitor manual)- Hey, here's something my wife could use in the house...
Crow T. Robot- A man?
Joe Wilson- An interocitor incorporating an electron sorter.
Cal Meechum- Oh, she'd probably gain 20 pounds while it did all the work for her.
Tom Servo- Cal, you bitch!

Saw it last night.
Thumbs up!
Each installment gets darker and scarier-a kid behind me commented, "This isn't a kid's movie, this is a horror movie!".
The name "Sirius Black" makes me laugh. All I can picture is a potential routine with Chris Rock talking about "all the these white folks runnin' round scared out their minds of a serious black!"
My wife yelled out "Token!" when the one Hogwarts student of color got to speak a line.
I barely noticed that Richard Harris was replaced. They did a good job casting.
The trailer for "Spider Man 2" remains one of the best movie trailers I've seen. (Funny how they still are called 'trailers' when they come before the movie)
I love Gummy Bears and chocolate, but after trying them at the theater I don't like "Muddy Bears"-chocolate covered Gummy Bears.
Anyway, great summer popcorn flick...

I assume it was Dean Thomas (Harry & Ron's dormmate) & not Lee Jordan (The Quidditch commentator whose had lines)

Unless they finally let Angelina, Parvati, or Padma talk.

First day of release?? Try two days before release (Wednesday night). Really liked the atmosphere that Cuaron created, as well as the fact that everything went somewhere. It felt long, but not boring-long like the first two films. You could tell it was a half hour shorter. Alan Rickman continues to own, while Daniel Radcliffe is actually become a fairly competent actor.

Highly recommended.

Also has my highest recommendataion. When my biggest complaint is "Huh? There isn't more?", then you know you have a blockbuster on your hands. Looking forward to Goblet of Fire in 2005.

I'm in the minority here. I liked the first two films better, and I didn't like the new Dumbledore. I thought this one felt a bit disjointed. Goblet of Fire is going to have to be longer than this one, just to get a fraction of that novel in.

I enjoyed it. I didn't think it was as good as Chamber of Secrets, because I thought the tag team of Ron/Harry is better than Harry/Heromine. I just think Ron and Harry work better. I will say that a Ron/Heromine saves the day movie would be fun to watch, but the books aren't called "The students of Hogwarts", now is it? This one is better than the first one, because the first one on second viewing drags in parts. Nothing against the first one, because it has the hardest job i.e. the set-up. I just think its tough to get into a second time.

I liked the dark feel of the movie with the iris fading in and out. Gary Oldman was great as Sirirous Black and I liked the guy who played Lupin. It probably helped that you know who was all mentioned and not the main villian. The Hippogryph was nicely done and the Dementors didn't have that Nazguel rip-off feel I thought they would have. It was nicely done and as someone who hasn't read the books, I appericate it.

Count me in with Whitebacon, I liked the first 2 better then this one. But that is more to do with the story rather then Cuaron's direction. It was interesting to see Hogwart in a more sinister light. After all Wizards and Witches are meant to be feared (traditionally) but the boy in me preferred the more majestic colorful Hogwarts that was in HP2. I tried not to, but I couldn't help but compare Doubledores. I watched HP1 a few days ago and I was thinking of Harris's Dumbledore when he gave the introduction to the first year students. The warning he gave them about wandering off the school grounds. He seemed so kingly and wise. Gambon's Dumbledore seemed so animated and energetic. It seemed a bit off to me. Once again the best thing to me was Alan Rickman's Snape. Since I have never read the books (I tried and couldn't get past Rowling's prose) I hope Snape has more screen time in the next movie.

Snape was SUPPOSED to have more airtime in this. There's a whole shitload of backstory between Lupin, Sirius and Snape that they barely touched upon here, which made Snape interrupting that horribly rushed scene in the Shrieking Shack look totally contrived. Basically, Lupin, Sirius, Pettigrew and Harry's dad created the Marauder's Map-they were Mooney (Lupin-a werewolf), Wormtail (Pettigrew-a rat), Padfoot (Sirius-the dog) and Prongs (James-a stag). Peter, Sirius and James became Animagi so that they could keep Lupin company when he transformed every month when they were at school. Of course they ALSO specialised in tormenting Snape, and one particularly cruel prank almost got him killed, which explains his hatred.

Obviously these, amongst other things-the details that have separated the books from the rest of the kiddie's fare, the very factors that have made them the huge hits they are-are obviously ditched for silly set-pieces. And AGAIN, that denouement in the Shack, which is Rowling's best piece of writing in the series so far, is so stupidly sped through to get to the time-travel action stuff that it's absolutely criminal.

Once upon a time in China, some believe, around the year one double-ought three, head priest of the White Lotus Clan, Pai Mei was walking down the road, contemplating whatever it is that a man of Pai Mei's infinite power contemplates - which is another way of saying "who knows" - when a Shaolin monk appeared, traveling in the opposite direction. As the monk and the priest crossed paths, Pai Mei, in a practically unfathomable display of generosity, gave the monk the slightest of nods. The nod was not returned. Now was it the intention of the Shaolin monk to insult Pai Mei or did he just fail to see the generous social gesture? The motives of the monk remain unknown. What is known, are the consequences. The next morning Pai Mei appeared at the Shaolin Temple and demanded of the Temple's head abbot that he offer Pai Mei his neck to repay the insult. The Abbot at first tried to console Pai Mei, only to find Pai Mei was inconsolable. So began the massacre of the Shaolin Temple and all 60 of the monks inside at the fists of the White Lotus. And so began the legend of Pai Mei's five point palm exploding heart technique.

Now that you said that, I will give the books another chance. I tried with Chamber of Secrets, but could never get past the first few chapters. I will most likely go ahead and jump right into Prisoner. I was also like WTF when Harry tossed Snape and next thing I know Siris and Harry are bonding.

I read in Entertainment Weekly that they were saving the history re: the Map and Harry's dad because they thought it would work better in a future film... which begs the question, if you are already in a position of having to cut whole chunks of books 4 & 5 due to time, why would you add info from book 3 that could have been provided with a mere 5 minute addition to the film...

Count me in on the Shrieking Shack scene being rushed to the point of confusion consensus as well. Everything else tho... wonderful.

The problem that the movie creators have is that there isn't enough time. They were lucky, the first one didn't run three hours, so you have to cut stuff for time. I am in favor of having three hour films, but eventually they run a long and boring. They needed the time travel thing to explain the end, the whole Snap and Harry's Dad and friends was explained with Lupin early on. There is no need to go into every detail about in the movies, there isn't time nor is always necessary.

I think people have to realize that when you do an adaption, you need to capture the spirit of the books instead of word in the pages. I am huge comic book fan, yet I love most of the Marvel movies sans Hulk. I love them, because they do capture the essence of each character and for the most part get the main points across. They have done a good job of making great films. I am a bit tired about people whinning about this wasn't in the book and stuff. You know what thats a book and this is a movie, either enjoy both for what they are or pick one. I prefer the movies, because I don't have the time to read the books and honestly, I am visual learner. If I want to know about the books, my friends read them and tell me about it. Thats good enough for me.

As far as what will be in the next movie, I don't know, but it sounds like it will be almost be a two parter. The movies should go their own path, because after the fourth one, the cast is going to change thanks to the geniuses at WB, the people who canned Angel. It might be better to end in the fourth one and let it be.

That's interesting A Fan, what are your feelings on Daredevil? I still think they should have padded the cabin scene more. And man are the classes getting boring. If I was a Hogwarts student I would skip that divinty class every chance I got.

One of the ongoing themes in the book was that the Divination class was boring and difficult due to unpredictable nature of Divination.

And I agree with A Fan. This is a movie people! It is NOT the book. Books have the advantage of being able to go into detail that a visual medium can never achieve.

But movies have the advantage of letting its audience's brain go on cruise control.

I thought this movie captured the essence of the book very well. Granted, the cabin scene did feel a bit rushed, a 5 minute scene that explained why Snape was following Lupin, or how Lupin knew where Harry was, etc. would have set the cabin scene up perfectly.

Or it could just be me wanting more time with Alan Rickman vs. Gary Oldman.

No, really, they had to make cuts for the sake of time? They can't use every detail? I didn't know, I thought they were just being cruel, this changes my entire viewpoint...

Seriously, can people be a little less prone to lecturing when it comes to the topic of cuts made for time in movie adaptions? We all know WHY they had to cut things, in this case however it's WHAT & HOW they cut that bothers people, because the ending feels rushed and mildly confusing, and it could have been solved by including the info that they cut. It's not like anyone was complaining about the loss of the Gnome scene in Book 2 or something... this is something that provided answers to questions that were brought up in the movie and could have been done in 5 lines or less, even if it was just by letting someone call Pettigrew 'Wormtail' in front of Harry and then allowing Harry to put 2 and 2 together at the end when Lupin uses the password to clear the map. Just like how they slipped in a line for Sirius about Lupin needing a potion to keep from turning into a wolf; its perfectly simple, makes things clearer, doesn't take a major amount of time, and doesn't require the rest of the explanation provided in the book to make the audience understand what it means to the plot and to Harrys character.

And like I mentioned in my previous post, they're planning on including this info in one of the next films, so why was it neccessary to save 3 minutes from this, the SHORTEST H.P. film, when the length is a HUGE issue for the next 2?

Awesome. Very well and beautifully made. That must have taken a lot of engineering skills to make that. The elephant shower at the beginning.. I wonder how big that is! If I saw something like this down the street, I'd gasp and be fascinated.
