I just saw the videotape. I'm pleasantly surprised to see Sonjay Dutt in TNA, since I enjoyed his work in MLW.

Also, I may be just a newbie when it comes to TNA, but I think many would agree with me that Toby Keith suplexing Jeff Jarrett is still more believable than William Shatner beating up The Roadie.

I was at the tapings and other than Jeremy Borash asking the fans not to yell "you suck" (due to the daytime broadcast hour), there was no coaching needed. I don't have access to the TV show, so I am not sure if there was any "audio sweetening" done, but the crowd was somewhat free-willed for their reactions, both cheering and booing the heels.

It was certainly better than a WCW Worldwide taping, let alone a current broadcast of Smackdown.

I'm Renegade Raine and I approve this message:

I was excited to see TNA today, since it was my first time watching it. I thought it did good for an hour show. Very nice matches. I watched with my sister, who commented that she wished there was a couple more storylines, because she wasn't really sure who was the "bad" and "good" guys. I was happy with the wrestling, but my sister categorizes your typical mark more, so maybe just a little more of storylines would be nice. It was kind of fun explaining who some of the people were (that weren't Road Dogg...that was the ONE person she recognized, she told me she thought he was homeless in Mexico...heh).

And on another note, Popeye hugging Shark Boy was...weird.

I was pumped up for Impact! all day, because it was going to be my first TNA show. And to me, it delivered. I had a great time watching it, taped it, will probably watch it again tomorrow or Sunday, and look forward to watching it in the future.

I saw some great moves that really made me say "wow." I think the coolest move I saw was the flipping piledriver thing the one guy did at the beginning (sorry, I don't know the names of any moves or wrestlers yet).

Two thumbs way up from me.

Also, it was better than SmackDown!.

This type of comment strikes me as similar to a wildly hypothetical cause of a guy who's been eating nothing but steak for years just trying soda crackers for the first time - and immediately proclaiming them a "better" food, when they probably should have just stuck with the description of "different" until they've had a few meals to think over what they'd REALLY rather be eating.

Me, I think that "spot spot spot" stuff gets old just as fast as airing a talk-heavy show, but I'm not ready to make WWE vs. TNA comparisons on the basis of their "free" offerings after only one week.

Overall, I enjoyed the debut show, as there were no outright bad matches (aside from Abyss/Shark Boy, but that was a minute squash, so...), and it kept me entertained for an hour.

I like the six-sided ring. Don't know why. I just do.

I don't mind if the audience needs coaching to know who to boo or cheer, as they are taping in a television studio with lots of tourists in the crowd. If WCW had to do it at Disney, then there's no shame in TNA having to do it at Universal.

The one complaint I DO have, is that the 10-minute time-limit is REALLY constricting. The Four-corners X-match should have been longer than 7 minutes, but that's hard to do with a 10-minute time-limit. They should change that.

Overall, I thought it was a fine first show. But, man, that Friday at 3:00 spot is gonna' kill 'em.

I think that, right now, there's a tendancy to like anything other than Smackdown, because, you know, Smackdown is kind of on a down swing.

So Impact! - was it great? I dunno. OK, I guess. I watch a certain amount of Lucha and it had some of those elements, especially with the 6-sided ring. Was it worth an hour? I can tell you I was wandering part of the time, the same way I do when Bob Holly hits the ring. I don't really know these TNA guys, for the most part, despite catching Explosion! from time to time.

I think, like Chris said, we have to give it a few weeks. I was never an ECW fan because of the spot-heavy stuff. When they became more story-line,psychology oriented, near the end, is when I liked them the most.

But that's why they have different TV shows.

I don't believe I've ever inferred that I HAVE a show - other than the performance art you can experience right here at The W. Perhaps you've misinterpreted my previous post? (I wouldn't be surprised)

Maybe I am missing your point, or maybe I missed this part in the commentary, but I think the time limit is arbitrary. I know the tag-team title match had a 30 minute time-limit. I'm going to assume that if they had wanted to give the X-division match more time, they would have simply used a longer time-limit. But if they are only going to give it 7 minutes anyway, there is no need. So I don't think the time assigned to the match is any different than time assigned to matches in WWE. It's just that TNA actually uses a clock, where WWE doesn't.

They set a standard that title matches will have 30 minutes and non-title matches 10. I think 15/30 would've been better but it's not a big deal, because they don't have a lot of time available on the show and a 7-10 minute match is about what should be expected anyway.

I just think that the broad "non-title matches have 10-minute time-limits" is kind of restricting. If they ever have a pontentially great match that is not for a title, they will be constricted to having it go under 10 minutes.

I'd say it was a successful show. I watched it (on tape), without fastforwarding through it (except the commercials and hype for next week's PPV) and was entertained with what I saw.

While I didn't know who most of the guys were, I think it's kinda fun to start with a blank slate and figure things out as I go along.

I'll certainly watch the tape of next week's show.

I agree, but they can always change that for any given match. "Russo has decreed that this match have a THIRTY MINUTE TIME LIMIT!"

Is it really impossible to assume that Nuclear Winter was expressing an OPINION about which he thinks is better, and not releasing a godlike decree about the way thing absolutely are? Geez.

(And I've had a few meals of each of them, and right now I'd pick TNA over SD! This is always subject to change -- It used to be the other way around, for sure. I keep buying all the PPVs for both companies anyway.)

As a long time watcher of TNA, I'll say: the show seemed pretty disjointed, rushed, and more spotty than usual -- and I'm a spot-mark, so what I mean is "even for me, it was pretty spotty." For instance:

"Canadian Destruction" is the move and the wrestler is Petey Williams, captain of Team Canada. It's SUCH an awesome move that it's really a shame that it gets squished into the midst of a six-man with a MILLION flippy-flippy moves. It's the kind of move that really should finish a match for good, huh?

"Those commentators make Michael Cole sound good..."

I'd understand that sort of comment about Don West, but you really can't lump Mike Tenay into that category. He could talk/commentate circles around Michael Cole about any given match.

Easy, they go to a 10 minute draw and setup a rematch on the Wednesday PPV with No Time Limit. Mail that one to Russo and file it under wrestling logic.

The six-sided ring is obviously a harbinger of Zeus's eventual arrival. Or did they use an EIGHT sided ring in "No Holds Barred"?

HOW the heck does Shark Boy "BITE" his opponents? I've only seen maybe four Shark Boy matches, and each one has involved the "BITING" spot. Just cracks me up. Has a savvy announcer at least tried to explain this? Maybe "well, even though his mouth is covered by a mask, Shark Boy has taken to ..gasp...SHARPENING the pieces of fabric over his mouth!" (And don't get all technical on me.. yes, you could pull a shirt over your head and STILL bite someone.. but the whole concept's funny to me.)

Was it just my local channel, or were there ALOT of commercials for country music? Talk about stereotyping your audience. I'm surprised they didn't show any Skoal, or divorce lwayer commericals. I'll turn on Fox for other sports and I can't recall ever seeing country music commercials.

TNA's been running a few "Greatest Matches" segments through the "On Demand" feature on Comcast cable. Last month they had Team AAA vs. Team Canada and Sabin/Shane/Daniels/Low-ki for the X title. First time I had seen NWA/TNA and it served as a decent intro class for me.
