NBA DRAFT LOTTERY

1. Orlando
2. L.A. Clippers
3. Chicago
4. Charlotte
5. Washington
6. Atlanta
7. Phoenix
8. Toronto
9. Philadelphia
10. Cleveland
11. Golden State
12. Seattle
13. Portland
14. Utah

Ain't that Great. Given the weak prospects, I'm guessing the Magic take the safe road and select Okafor, which is fine by me. The only problem is Orlando is approaching Clippers territory when it comes to blowing this. The piss poor history with developing players added to the front office inexplicably getting rid of talent (Ben Fucking Wallace! and then cry the blues about having no one in the middle) not to mention the continued albatross of Grant Hill leads me to believe they are going nowhere fast. T-Mac is being painted into a corner (much like Shaq) into leaving town when his contract is up next year - the smart people say "this is what T-Mac needs for motivation! A first round draft pick!!". Baloney. What would be great for motivation is if Management could decide and stick with a team game plan, be it shoot at white flags (like Sac and Dallas) or get stiff on Defense (like Detroit)and hope T-Mac's 30 ppg can carry.

Anyone out there want to trade? 1st round pick PLUS Grant Hill (shouldbebetteranydaynow)...leave the suitcase full of cash at the door, please.

All the rest of you - good luck with the high school kids. And foreigners.

Rumor is that the Magic are also shopping T-Mac. God only knows for what though. Wouln't surprise me if the Magic finish in last in the Southeast, behind Charlotte.

Give 'em another year or two of this and they'll leave Orlando.

Great; another promising Duke star gets exiled to the black hole that is the LA Clippers. Hopefully Brand and Maggette can help Luol Deng get over that "why didn't I stay in school" feeling that'll probably hit around February.

I thought he hadn't hired an agent so he could opt to return to Duke. If he can, he SHOULD go back if he thinks the Clips are taking him.

Nah. The Clips will take Howard at No. 2, if the Magic don't take him at No. 1 in which case Okafor would go to the Clips. Deng will probably end up in Chicago.

Actually I could see them bypassing Dang and going for Dwight Howard, for no discernable reason except for the fact that picking a high school prospect at a position where they don't need anyone would be the most Clipper thing they can do.

Although with them needing a small forward unless he decides suddenly to go back to Duke for another year I can't see LA not taking him if he's available. The only reason they don't if he's available is because these are the Clippers we're talking about.

Since Dunleavy made the appearance for the Clippers, does that mean the lovely, scenic community of Secaucus had to cancel the annual Elgin Baylor Day parade?

If Orlando didn't get the #1 pick then I'd agree they should look to trade it. Orlando needs a player like Okafor in the worst way.

Speaking of trades, Chad Ford (who I like to call "TIMMAHY") said that there is a possibility that the Clips might trade the #2 pick to Atlanta for #6 and #17. This would enable Atlanta to take local kid Dwight Howard and enable the Clips to take a PG at #6 (Gordon, Harris, or Livingston) and just grab the best player available at #17.

I'd be very surprised if Orlando didn't take Okafor... they need an inside presence in the worst way.

There are some concerns regarding his back, though. The last thing the Magic need to do is sign someone who'll only end up playing five games for them over the next three years due to injury.

...Oops, I meant to add “again”.

(Seriously, though, all my best to Grant Hill. Still... they signed him while he was on crutches).

EDIT:

Looks like there are already trade rumors swirling around the Magic's #1 draft pick.

Read about it here.

It'd be interesting if the Bobcats managed to swing this thing and get Okafor, a player who can help them immediately. Then again, the Bobcats are in Orlando's division, and they're already in danger of finishing higher than Orlando in the Southeast, even though their roster hasn't been determined yet. I can't imagine Orlando drafting Okafor and trading him to Charlotte, especially not when he'll have four opportunities every year to make them regret it.

Besides... how good could Charlotte's expansion-draft players possibly end up being, anyway?

The rumblings out of Heatland is that they're going to leave Jones and Grant unprotected in the HOPES that Charlotte takes one of them in order to give Miami some salary cap leeway. Although I think it's more likely they take Grant as a stopgap rebounder at the 4/5 spot than Jones, IF in fact they do either.

I very sincerely doubt the Bobcats will take Jones. His seven-year, $92.88 million contract expires in '07, with a player opt-out clause in '05. I don't know if Jones would choose to exercise the opt-out clause, since there's no way he'll ever get paid this kinda money ever again.

Brian Grant's $86 million contract expires in '07, with a player opt-out in '05. Again... I don't think so. I think that contract is simply too rich for the Bobcats' blood.

Of course, the Heat could dangle future draft picks and cash in front of the Bobcats to make either player more enticing. And the Bobcats could, if they choose to, immediately release that player, freeing them of the salary burden and making that player an unrestricted free-agent. So you bet Eddie Jones is sweating bullets right now.

Here's an interesting thought, though. You know how desperate Orlando is to get rid of Grant Hill's albatross contract. They could go to the maximum-possible extreme and dangle the #1 pick in front of the Bobcats in exchange for drafting and releasing Hill. You know the Bobcats would bite on that one.

Orlando would get the salary-cap flexibility it needs to go after a guy like Kenyon Martin, Steve Nash, Mehmet Okur, Manu Ginobili or even Kobe Bryant. Charlotte would be able to pick Okafor, a young guy who could contribute immediately and give them a presence in the post that most NBA teams desperately wish they had.

The Magic would have to weigh the risk. If they feel it's likely they can get one or two of those guys, I think they'll pull the trigger on this sort of a deal with Charlotte. Orlando's always been a free-agent hotspot, in any case. If Orlando doesn't feel it's do-able, they might offer Charlotte a little bit less... but I still wouldn't be surprised to see them dangle Hill.

I think they could be fairly decent, at least relative to their division. I haven't gotten a chance to look at the list of unprotected players, but of the whopping 3 players that I know of, Eddie Jones could be a good veteran leader and Kerry Kittles could definitely make some noise.

I forgot about that particular loophole in the salary cap, which would make it a win-win for all parties not named Eddie Jones and Grant Hill.

Getting rid of Jones would create two advantages. One would be the room in the cap to either get a center or a point guard, and Miami needs both (possibly using one of them as collateral in a sign/trade deal?) and also it would allow Dwyne Wade Superstar to go to his more natural position of 2-guard.

You know, between landing Wade and Odom (and keeping Odom out of Killian Park to boot), getting some playoff experience and landing in the NBA's softest new division, things are looking up in a hurry.

Yeah, I think that even if they don't improve much more, personnel-wise, over the offseason, the Heat are legitimate Eastern Conference Championship contenders in '05.

Seriously. Your Heat may have lost to my Pacers, but they gained a tremendous amount respect in my eyes.
