good news for fans of "Tru Calling" and "Arrested Development" as both series have begun staffing for the 2004-05 season, a sure sign renewals are around the corner for each.
Notables (for me, at least): -NBC's new Must-See Thursday is Joey, Will & Grace, the Apprentice & ER?? Talk about putting all your eggs in one basket. I would've put Scrubs in one of the Apprentice half-hours and put a new comedy in the other spot. -Glad to see Everwood, One Tree Hill & Smallville continuing on the WB. -Another Jason Alexander sitcom? Dear God...
THE NHL'S FINAL FOUR: Western Conference Final: Calgary Flames lead San Jose Sharks 2-1 [Game 4: Sunday] Eastern Conference Final: Tampa Bay Lightning & Philadelphia Flyers are tied 2-2 [Game 5: Tuesday]

This is the one (loosely) based off of Tony Kornheiser's Lifestyle columns? That one should be worth at least a cursory look.

Maybe the wife of the player? In the context of baseball, felonies are crimes against society, not against baseball. In the context of baseball, gambling is the only crime against baseball.
Gambling, in the context of baseball, is a capital offense and Rose has richly earned-- hell, he agreed to-- his death sentence. Let him hang.

Why would they put a new series(even if it is a Friends spin-off) at the 8PM Thursday slot?
Does the world need a fourht "Law and Order"?
The WB as usual is unable to justify its existance.

Law and Order: What Haven't We Covered Yet??
Law and Order: Trial by Jury.
I guess it's about the jury process, and will be a star vehicle for Jerry Orbach, who's leaving regular L&O to go to the new one. I guess Briscoe is going to be an investigator for the DA's office.
I'm one of those people that tv critics hate, because I could watch all the Law and Orders over and over again on a regular basis with very few complaints.

The WB does that Tuesday night at 8/7 central, thank you.
NBC loads Thursday because it's the the highest-viewed weeknight (although Monday has been infringing on that as of late) and film distributors buy ads heavy that night to promote the movies that open TOMORROW! Joey makes the most sense to replace Friends since, well, it's replacing it: where else do you put the spinoff? Will and Grace isn't strong enough to lead, and, well, there's all your contenders; it's not like NBC has anything else sitting around to fill in. It's hardly "new" in the sense that The Single Guy or Union Square or Jesse were since we know the character and they've got ADRIANA~! on board to make us wish that Matt LeBlanc was really Michael Imperioli. People used to hearing "How you doin?" can tune in same Joey time, same Joey channel, suffer through W&G before getting to the Trump, then wonder what WB has on NBC to keep ER on the air while they look for a channel with Daphne Moon Crane's brother on it.
Father of the Pride, meanwhile, sounds like it has disaster written all over it. I'm talking "Saved By The Bell: The New Class" level disaster. Same time slot, even.

I think this is likely what they have on NBC.
Math is fun!
NBC's license fee to WB: $8 million per episode. NBC's fee per 30-sec spot on ER: $400 thousand Being generous, let's give NBC ten of the fifteen minutes worth of spots...but subtract two of those for promos. That's eight minutes of network spots. NBC's take per episode of ER: $6.4 million.
Losing money.
The math, of course, is approximate, but close enough to make the point. Rating mean NOTHING if they do not translate to profit.
Promotional value for other programs? Yes. Recouping most of those losses during repeats? Yeah, though the repeats are rather lowly rated in comparison to first-runs. With little PR value (ER is no longer widely critically acclaimed, nor is it water cooler material like it was in the Clooney days) and no solid revenue stream, what's the point of keeping it on after next season? Try something new. No one really thought Without a Trace would score the ratings it did opposite ER, but it worked, and next year the ad rates will skyrocket...while the license fee won't.
And that eight mil per ep NBC pays? As we all know, that'a a bargain since back in 1998 it was raised to THIRTEEN million per episode. WB has actually given the Peacock a discount in the past three years.
All the numbers, by the way, are via our friends at the Futon Critic.

My name is Keith Stat from Milbourne, New Jersey. State bird, the mosquito. And as you may have heard I am recently a crowned class B dungeon-master. So if any of you would like to play D&D today, please speak now or forever hold your peace. [He chuckles, and there is an awkward silence at the table.] Caped Boy: Anyone? Alexa! [Alexa gives him a withering glare.] Caped Boy: Maybe you would like to join in? We do need a druid, and you have definitely cast a level 5 charm spell on me. Alexa: In your dreams, douche-bag! Caped Boy: Douche-bags are hygienic products, I take that as a compliment. Thank you. [Keith walks off] Alexa: Ewww!
I really liked "Run of the House." In fact the Friday night WB lineup was perfect the last few weeks. I'll be bummed if "8 Simple Rules" moves to Friday unless it's at that 8:30 slot (Commando Nanny, WTF?) "Like Family" was OK but once it went off Fridays I pretty much quit watching. "Scrubs" rules the sitcom world and a little earlier on tuesdays isn't bad as it's a very weak night with Scrubs and 8 being the only Tuesday shows I watch on a consistent basis. I didn't even get into 8 until Buffy went off the air, but it's a great show. I actually wish "That '70's Show" would go back to Tuesdays as I always end up missing 1/2 of "Enterprise." Good to see "Charmed" back but they're running out of good ideas, I would like to see it go out on top, not rushed off the air like "Angel" or "Buffy" or left to linger a slow death like "The X Files". Mondays and Thursdays are reserved of course for wrestling, although more and more I find myself channel surfing and watching the tapes in FFWD on Saturday mornings.
Where is the guy with the GOB avatar! Where is the guy with Girls With Low Self-Esteem! Baby let's get a stew going.

sorry, haven't been on much today. Thanks for being the bearer of good news. At least i've got something to look forward to next season!
I've still got half of the first season and the last episode of AD to watch this year. Hopefully they go through with the idea of releasing the first season on DVD this summer.

The anchor value of the show I'm sure is the justification for the gap. Without ER in that position on Thursday night, what happens to not just that time slot, but the 930-1000 EST time slot? And what happens to the newscasts on NBC owned affiliates and their ratings? By serving as the anchor point for the Thursday night lineup's later half, it impacts at least 3 separate timeslots, and the revenues affiliated with those positions.

Of course the impact on local news is important, and again the PR value of having such a legendary show still means something, but as far as it impacting the hour before it...well, I'd say these days The Apprentice helps ER more than vice versa.
