A few years ago, I began a website with a page called. "Things Which No Longer Exist." One of those things was Shasta Flavored Colas. I remember these very well because my mom bought a case of all the different flavors for my sixth grade graduation party in June 1969. The flavors were cherry, vanilla, chocolate, and lemon. These had been around for many, many years prior to that party. For some reason, despite their immense popularity, Shasta pulled them off the market in the late '70s. In obtaining my material for my website, I wrote an e-mail to the company that now owns Shasta and asked if they ever thought about resurrecting those old retro cola flavors (mind you, this is a few years before the advent of Vanilla Coke). They said they may try to do it but it won't be a retro thing. They will be "gourmet" flavors for people who want more from their colas. And they won't be out for good. The plans were, back in 1999, that they would be limited editions. That marketing person probably didn't do too well in history in school.

The one that I can't find any longer is Shasta Diet Chocolate soda. That stuff was good. Anyone seen it recently?

More links:

Shasta (shastapop.com)

National Beverage Corp (nbcfiz.com), the holder of the Shasta brand (along with Faygo and a million others)

The National Soft Drink Association's Brands page (nsda.org), which gave me all the other links

EDIT: Chocolate isn't on the current list of flavours (shastapop.com), looks like - try another NBC brand?

I told you their marketing people don't even know anything about their own history!

This is true with many companies dealing with convience comfort food. Jack in the Box was started in San Diego about 50 years ago by a company called Foodmaker, Inc. (Jack in the Box dropped this corporate name in 2000.) The original restaurant chain Foodmaker ran was called Oscar's. It was a lot like Denny's, except that it had carhop waitresses. I asked Jack in the Box when this chain closed down. They never heard of it!

A bit offtopic, but in San Diego there was a restaurant chain called Oscars up until two years ago, when the owner changed the name to Pat and Oscar's to recognize his wife's involvement with the company. It may be the company you are looking for?

//edit: http://www.patandoscars.com/what.tpl But it looks like Oscar's opened somewhere around 10 years ago.

I recently saw a TV ad for Fanta sodas! The staple of laundromat pop machines in the 70s!

If you go to this link here, you can watch classic Shasta commercials, including the one for the colas (it's the one called "Kids", but heck...they ALL rule.)

According to the commercial, there was the regular cola, Cherry, Lemon, Vanilla, Chocolate, and...PINEAPPLE COLA?!?

Shasta Cherry Cola, my favorite cola of all, never left production. You can still find that, thought not at stores that just sell 12-packs (Shasta doesn't package it in the 12 box for some reason). Shasta also has a French Vanilla Cola out now that my wife really likes.

I miss Red Apple Soda. But at least they brought back Tiki Punch.

I like Pineapple soda. How it's different from Pineapple Cola that Mr. Heel II mentioned, I dunno (well, less "Cola-y," I guess).

The vending machine at my high school had Shasta Pineapple soda in the late '80s. I recently tried to find it again, but I don't believe they make it anymore. I did find some Fanta Pineapple soda, though, and that worked pretty well.

The only soda that I really miss (and by that I mean that I feel a cold stabbing sensation in my heart whenever I think about it) is 7-Up Gold. And I can't even really remember what 7-Up Gold tasted like. I want to say cinnamon-y, but cinnamon soda seems unlikely.

No, you're right. It was like a spicy cinnamon ginger ale.

I know about the Pat and Oscar's restaurant. No connection. If you know anyone who was in San Diego who is my age or older, they would tell you all about the real Oscar's restaurant. Check out these two URLs for a menu: http://www.johnfry.com/Oscars.html http://www.johnfry.com/Oscars52.html

I remember 7 Up Gold. It was a cross between cola and near beer, an acquired taste, but interesting.

And, if anyone cares about such things, Sierra Mist was originally called Slice -- they're both the same thing.

Isn't Sierra Mist lemon-lime flavoured and Slice orange flavoured?

First came lemon-lime Slice (now Sierra Mist), then mandarin orange Slice.

Well, down here in Miami, we have a brand of pineapple soda called "JUPINA", I've never tasted it myself, but it's quite the popular drink, especially amongst the Latin community. They probably import it from some other country, though I don't know which one.

Also, one of the colas I miss most was Crystal Pepsi, before they put that citrus crap in it. It seemed like such a whimsical novelty at first. As a result, I drank half a 2-liter bottle a day. Then it was replaced with citrus Crystal Pepsi. I didn't like the new taste, so I gave up on it and returned to regular Pepsi. Finally, it just faded from existence. I guess many others agreed with me on hating the citrus.

Wow! What was I saying about the way people remember history. I don't think the name change of original Slice to Sierra Mist has been over three years (it's been during the time I've been working for my current employer in October '99) and people have already forgotten! There's a Pepsi machine at work that never got rid of the old Slice card from whence now comes Sierra Mist. Although I am a loyal Coke drinker, my employer (a public school district) switched from Coke machines to Pepsi machines in March 2000 because Pepsi promised to fund the building of a football stadium. I seem to remember there were other Slice flavors, but someone else can help here (brain spasm).

A better drink than Sierra Mist is found in Indonesia. It's green Fanta (the cap says "FRUIT PUNCH" but it's closer to a really smooth creme soda, which you can't find in Indonesia). I worked in Indonesia in the mid '90s to be close to my wife's family. This is probably the only soda pop I can say I really miss.

This has little to do with cola but is true to the theme of "products I can't find anymore". I miss Lender's Bagels. I want them so bad. They were awesome.

HMD, I don't wanna get you too excited, but I could just about swear I've seen them at the corner grocery store here. I haven't had one in quite some time, so I may be off on that... I'll check next time I go shopping.

On the subject of discontinued cola products... I remember trying it! cola with my mother and sister several years back, and enjoying it immensely. Not only was the cola good, but the incredibly bad it! jokes had us rolling around in tears before very long.

Okay, correct me if I'm wrong, but I seem to remember Orange Crush offering different flavors in the late 70's. I think they had Grape Crush and Pineapple Crush to go along with the Orange. I just remember avoiding the "yellow Orange Crush" can whenever we got to dig into the cooler after baseball games. To counter my brother's beer can collection, I tired collecting pop cans when I was about 5. Crushed 'em all down for recycling one day. Only regret is that I lost my Lyle Alzado Orange Crush can.

Isn't Fanta HUGE, worldwide? I had a geography professor in college who raved about sitting in Kenya, sipping Fanta with a gecko on her shoulder.

And whatever happened to...Pepsi Lite? I guess it's back as Pepsi One...but I remember the annoying TV jingle from the late 70's. "Drinking light, drinkin light..drinkin PESPI Liiite! Refreshing and one caloriiiiie". Had a buncha people walking on a beach or something.

http://www.angelfire.com/ca7/loyaltubist/Main.htmlGeckos? Let me tell you about geckos! I had finished my work in Indonesia and we were leaving the country by way of Bali, where we decided to spend about a week. I was eating at a Mexican restaurant in Kuta Beach with my family when a gecko attacked me (the way pigeons usually do here). The stuff landed on my beard and my plate. And I my cars are now insured with Geico!

Crush is still big in South America, where it's pronounced "CROOS." Orange only.

They're still around, although Lenders was bought out by the Kelloggs people a few years (seven or eight?) back. But they haven't been discontinued by any means.
