I was just wondering how you specifically pick just one picture off a page with a bunch of pics and other stuff on them. For example I am trying to use the comic cover on this page http://www.comics.org/ details.lasso?id=68780, but I can't seem to get it to work. Any help would be appreciate as I am html illiterate.

Above is the link directly to the picture.

Right click on the picture and chose "Properties" to get the direct link.

I copied and pasted that URL in and I still get the red x where the pic should be. Is there any more code or something else I need to add to get it to work?

Looks like you pasted the text in the message instead of the URL - some spaces are inserted in the text that'll really muck things up if you try using THAT as the URL. I took them out; it should work now.

Just a quick one - as I'm sure everything you have done is above board. Some sites really get the shits with you hot linking stuff (essentially because they are paying for the bandwidth for you to display your avatar in this case). Just something to be aware of.

As I said though - I'm sure you guys are sweet.

It did strike me as odd that one of the anti-piratical owners of The-W.com would condone hot-linking an image from a third-party site. In fact, it struck me even odder that said owner would go so far as to fix the html in the W in question's profile so that he actually *could* hot-link the image.

Just sayin'

Just right click on the picture, choose save as, save it to your desktop, go find an image host and upload it. Or, use the webspace your ISP gives you.

You may also want to resize the image or save it with higher compression so that the file size is smaller, that way your bandwidth won't get eaten up so quickly.

Besides, this is a super gray area.

I really don't see how it could be a gray area. Either you *can* willfully plunder the resources of someone else, or you cannot.

Would you be more against it if your cable company was supplying the bandwidth that a hot-linker was using? What if enough people stole bandwidth that they were forced to downsize a position due to the increased cots of server maintenance? (very unlikely, but you get my point)

If they didn't want their bandwidth stolen, they would have some sort of hotlink protection installed on their server.

One little 5K file loaded a few times won't kill them. If it were a 100K file loaded a few 1000 times, that's different, and that's when they'll kick in the HLP.

I remember someone here getting hit by hotlink protection. Doc_Whisky? maybe? The person kept trying to link to SomethingAwful.com and the image sent back was...not what he wanted.

I have something like that on my web host, but since one must be registered to even find any files, the point is moot.

Edit:

And now that I looked at it, FLEA's link just proves my point about HotLink Protection.

I think that was me... or maybe it was on another board. But yeah, no trying to hotlink to SA.

Yeah, SomethingAwful is VERY vigilant about that sorta stuff, they take image leeching really seriously. You'll get hit with goatse.cx, lemonparty, tubgirl, or one of the pain series so fast people'll think that's what you were actually TRYING to post. :)

It's a gray area, because it is not technically illegal.

You can argue if it's ethical, but it's not illegal as far as I can tell.

It would be copyright infringement, however, if you took their copyrighted file and saved it to your webhost and served it from there. That's actually more illegal than just linking to their picture, because you are not simply referencing content that they provide, but making your own copy and referencing it.

People don't like deep linking sometimes, but it doesn't make it illegal. It's not very friendly to give direct links to content to avoid ads, but it's not illegal.

Like I said, it's a gray area.

If I didn't feel there was reciprocity involved, I would be more gung-ho about it...but let's face it, we "steal" from them, they "steal" from us...as long as everybody is working together, the Internet is a better place. "Information wants to be free." If they feel they're being taken advantage of, they have the means to block us just like Tripod or SA is already doing. If *I* feel WE'RE being taken advantage of, I can do the same thing - sites that were "borrowing" my wife's content, for example, ended up getting blocked.

If you really want to evangelize on the topic, you might want to take on FARK first. ;-)

Wow, this is all news to me. So, someone is basically paying for my avatar? Are we talking fractions, pennies, or more. I can see that really adding up if you had something popular. I don't feel horrible about it though, I know you couldn't or still can't link to the Scott Keith pictures Scotsman had up for awhile. So, since it's preventable and doesn't seem like a huge charge I guess I'm still okay with pirating in this case.

As a small experiment, When I first replied to this thread yesterday I made my avatar hotlink a gif from my rather pathetic homepage (that seriously needs updating half the links are dead). I've just checked the logs for the account server and in the last 24ish hours I've had 140 requests for that image from hosts, various. This now constitutes 90% of my site traffic

Now this image is only 5926 (810.2k total served) bytes and the-w is a reasonably popular board with the option to turn off graphics. You can imagine how much bandwidth a 20-30k image used on one of the really busy boards could chalk up the numbers.

I don't really subscribe to the theory of "If they didn't want their bandwidth stolen, they would have some sort of hotlink protection installed on their server." I think its akin to saying a shop condones shoplifting because they don't hire some burly security guard to stand at the door.

That said, the Internet came into being as a way for scholars to share information, so what CRZ is saying I think is subscribing to common sense - and if it becomes a problem - stop it.

Just something to be aware of incase your avatar on the "lonely singles" forum suddenly turns into a pic of a guy having sex with a tree.
