Apparently racism is alive and well at Cracker Barrel. (USA Today)

Just...wow. How in the blue hell does sh*t like this still happen in the 21st century?

(EDIT: Gotta remember to put the URL in-between the quotes when linkifying, Thrill...ya dumbass. Thanks for covering, OFB!)

I think this is the story in question.

""[The word] liberal derives from the Latin 'liberalis' - of freedom, befitting the free. Synonyms are progressive, broad-minded, unprejudiced and generous; while antonyms include reactionary, narrow-minded, intolerant and stingy. Accordingly, a political liberal is an open-minded person who considers all the arguments before drawing conclusions. A conservative, on the other hand, clings to one position and sees no reason to entertain diverse viewpoints because he already has his mind made up. Are mainstream media 'liberal'? I certainly hope so."

A bit off topic, but did anyone else find the constant usage of (paraphrasing) "so-and-so who is an African-American was delayed being served by so-and-so who is white", very distracting?

The story is just plain awful. Like The Thrill I'm shocked that companies of Cracker Barrel's size actually allow this to happen, but the constant usage of the above terminology just detracted from the actual story, & made blacks & whites seem even more separated & different than we actually are.

For whatever unfathomable reason, Cracker Barrel seems to thrive on discrimination. Our local one had an issue a few years ago where they refused service to a gay couple. This prompted a sit-in protest where gays from all over the country were going to fill the booths. It made national news, was a huge deal here, then on the day of the protest about six people showed up... and they promptly left after seeing the restaurant as packed as it had ever been with rednecks who showed up to support CB.

So yeah... they definitely live up to their name.

Ironically, I ate at a Cracker Barrel Sunday night with some friends and we were the only white people in the restaurant.

Not to disregard these people's claims, if they're true, then Cracker Barrel is taking turn-of-the-century nostalgia a little too far.

Not that I care....and this isn't a knock...but I found it humorous that this post was knocking Cracker Barrel over the gay issue while the posters sig has a knock on gays in it.

Well, "knocking" may be too strong a term. To be honest I was amused by the whole thing.

South Carolina is a whole different world. Mini-bottles, Confederate Flag on State House grounds... we still hold a grudge for not being allowed to secede 140 years or so ago. :)

I went to a CB in VA 2 years ago on the suggestion of a local redneck for a Genuine American BreakfastTM. The service was tolerable considering how busy they were, but I was really disappointed in the food.

So, in reference to the story, I side with the guy who vommited.

I'd be more than willing to rethink that proposition. And by all means, take Florida and Texas with you.

As far as the descrimination is concerned, I'm shocked. However, I'm equally as shocked at whoever started the thread. 'Cracker Barrel lives up to their name' alludes to the word 'Cracker' in the sense of it's being a racial slur degrading caucasians. Sheesh, how do things like this happen in the 21st Century?

The mouse thing does not surprise me one bit. Managers of big chain restaurants do not want their line cooks to talk about what happens in the kitchen for two reasons. Primarily, it's so you don't let something slip that will get the health inspector called on you, but they also say so you won't let your 'secret recipes' fly. When I worked at a restaurant, there was always a mad dash to clean up before the health board showed up. After all, when the health inspector leaves, it's back to business as usual.

http://www.angelfire.com/ ca7/loyaltubist/Main.htmlMy wife and I are getting ready to celebrate our 19th anniversary in July. We married in San Bernardino, CA, and our honeymoon was a cross country drive to Fort Dix, NJ, where I was stationed in the Army.

Our first stop was Las Vegas, where we stayed at the Circus Circus in their honeymoon suite (beautiful!)

Leaving Las Vegas, we stopped at a Denny's in Henderson, NV. Now I'm white and my wife is Chinese. While she made a pit stop in in the ladies' room, I secured us a booth and ordered us coffee. The waitress would not take my wife's order unless I said it for her. She told me afterwords that she couldn't understand her accent. There was more to it than that, I realized after we had already crossed Hoover Dam and were well into Arizona. She would not listen to anyone who wasn't Caucasian and we saw that with other patrons in the coffee shop (it took about two hours for that to sink in.)

In this trip we also went through much of the Deep South and were never treated in a hostile manner. In fact, most establishments gave us extra special service when we told them we just got married.

I didn't see any references to this in the USA Today article, but weren't there racial discrimination claims against Cracker Barrel in addition to (and IIRC, more emphasized than) sexual orientation discrimination claims a long time ago? I'm talking about big time, on a national level.

Me and my wife have been milking that one for about 2 and a half years now. Th best place is the airplane, where you might get a first-class upgrade if you drop it to the flight attendants.

Jeez.

I haven't noticed anything like that going on at any Cracker Barrel I've ever been to... but then again, I'm white.

Makes me wonder if, in fact, there is no discrimination going on at the stores I've visited... or if it's happening flagrantly and simply going on without me noticing it.
