I'm surprised there was so much interest in him due to his size....

Giants sign Kentucky QB Jared Lorenzen
TOM CANAVAN
Associated Press

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. - Kerry Collins isn't the only New York Giants quarterback seemingly heading out the door.

"The Bachelor" may not be far behind.

Jesse Palmer's future with the Giants is also uncertain with the signing of J. Load.

That's Jared Lorenzen, the 280-pounder from Kentucky who looks more like an offensive lineman than a quarterback.

Leigh Steinberg, who represents Lorenzen, confirmed the signing on Tuesday.

Lorenzen was not drafted this past weekend.

Giants spokesman Pat Hanlon said the team had no comment.

Lorenzen threw for 10,354 yards and 78 touchdowns despite playing in three different offenses. He also threw 41 interceptions, but only 20 in his final three seasons.

Collins, who has been the Giants quarterback since 1999, all but guaranteed that he would be released soon after refusing to renegotiate his contract.

The Giants wanted concessions after making a draft-day trade to acquire Eli Manning, the No. 1 overall pick, from the San Diego Chargers.

Collins was due to make $7 million this season and he would have counted $8.95 million against the salary cap.

The Giants also have had a couple of veteran quarterbacks in for workouts.

Palmer, who is starring in the reality television series "The Bachelor," wasn't overly impressive in leading the team after Collins went down with an ankle injury late last season.

Palmer completed 60 of 116 passes for 532 yards, three touchdowns and four interceptions.

Jason Garrett, who was the Giants No. 3 quarterback last season, signed with Tampa Bay as a free agent.

The election is still six months away. But Kerry's reputation has been built over 40 years. And the voters seem to be sniffing it out.- David S. Broder

That first rounder for next season that the Chargers got keeps looking better by the day.

Hey now the Pillsbury Throwboy may be the best passing fullback to ever enter the league!

I think Lorenzen, if he gets his weight under control, could be a good backup in the NFL. He moves shockingly well for 300 pound guy and has a cannon for an arm. I was happy with his four years here at UK.

We have a redshirt freshamen this year that may see some time, Andre Woodson. I really like him a lot. He is still raw but he reminds me of Dante Culpepper. He is big, athletic, and throws the ball a "country mile" as we say in these parts. He needs to work on his timing and accuracy, but I think 3 years from now he may be a hot pro prospect.

He's carrying a soldering iron!" and started laughing, and everybody else started laughing, I could just say, "That's right, it's a soldering iron. The soldering iron of justice." Then everybody would get real quiet and ashamed, because they had made fun of the soldering iron of justice, and I could probably hit them up for a free drink.

Yeah but Culpepper is in shape, J-Lo is just fat. Part of his problem at UK was he would get wore out in the second half. How many times were the Cats in the game the first half only to Lorenzen get wor out and flounder in the second half. If Lorenzen can get conditioned he may go places.

J-Lo has got a cannon of an arm on him ... I'm glad someone took a chance on him. If he doesn't pan out at QB, there's always room for a D-lineman.

Let's all use the nickname in the article: J-Load. It's so much funnier and better (and more talented?). Although, seeing comments like this: "J-Lo is just fat."(Ffej), is very funny in the wrong context.

I've actually been a fan of J-Load over the last couple of years - he's got a good arm, but works best when he doesn't feel like it's just him alone that has to win ballgames. I think the Wildcats lost a couple of games last year due to stuff like that.

He could stand to drop some weight, though. He does move incredibly well, though. (Heck, he had more mobility than Casey "Weeblie" Clausen, but that's just me being bitter. Enjoy him, Chiefs fans.)

And who came up with the name J-Load? Hmmm...

Okay, you're leading the #25 team in the nation by 17 with about 2 mins in the 3rd Quarter, and you've just had an awesome defensive stop that is forcing them to punt. Cool, right? Of course, Kentucky pulls out its gun and shoots itself in the foot once again by having 12 men on the field, giving Florida a 1st down and the ball around midfield. Florida would wind up getting a touchdown, but missing a 2-pt conversion leaving the score 21-9 with around 13 mins to play. No prob, right?

UK drives for a bit, but then has to punt it. Florida scores again, and kicks an extra point, so it's 21-16 with about 5 mins left. Kentucky actually moves the ball a little and is eating time off the clock. Jared Lorenzen has been shrugging off Gators all afternoon and either completing wild passes, or getting rid of the ball. Of course, J-Load goes to the well once too often and instead of eating the ball for a sack, or getting the ball out of bounds, he throws an interception on his own end of the field that Florida returns to UK's 2. A few plays and a 2-pt conversion later, Florida now leads 24-21. Now, I would have fired the special teams coach at the end of the 3rd quarter and benched Lorenzen after that interception, but to his credit, Jared leads the 'Cats down for a desperate 50-yard figgie try that is not even close.

So Ron Zook, who's beating off boosters and fans left and right, and starting an 18-year old Freshman who was 18mos old the last time UK actually beat Flordia, just has to sit back and watch Kentucky shoot itself in the foot once again. As if it wasn't painfully obvious before, Florida just OWNS Kentucky in football. I've seen too many close calls and blowouts to think otherwise.

It's going to take awhile to get over this one, and I'm still trying to get over the LSU loss from last year.

The only thing that could make me feel better right now is seeing Tennessee lose to the 'Cocks, and I loathe having to root for that troll Holtz.

Grrrrrrr . . . >>

And yes, I'm still pissed about that game.

I loathe the Raiders, but was opening pleading with God for them to take him as the "Mr. Irrelevant." He would have been PERFECT for them (in my mind of course).

I'd rather have J-Load as the QB of the future than giving up the future for Manning. Plus, he can't be worse than Palmer.

Shoot, Kentucky was lucky to even be in a game against Florida and they were up 21 - 9, that tells me more than the inevitable collapse. That was just Kentucky being Kentucky and Florida being Florida (I mean they DID win games against four consecutive top 25 teams so it's not like Florida isn't a team who could comeback against anybody)

I like Lorenzen, I didn't think anybody would draft him because of his weight, but I'm glad somebody picked him up, I mean it's not going to hurt to atleast give him a chance. Also "Hefty Lefty" might be my favorite nickname of all time.

And let us not forget "the Round Mound of Touchdown" or "the Pillsbury Throw Boy" ...

Some of the TV stations around here in Nashville are reporting that the Giants are trying to coax Neil O'Donnell out of retirement to mentor Eli. O'Donnell was trying to get a front office job with the team, but was made the offer to play.

I don't think the Giants will have to worry that he's going to get worn out from actually playing. The clipboard might get heavy in the second half though.

Now it looks like the Giants are revamping their entire QB Corps. Can't say I'm impressed with this pickup. I watched him play his last two years at Penn State, and, other than his pass to Chaffi Fields to beat Miami in a shocker, I can't remember much memorable about his tenure here.

I would be surprised if the Bachelor stayed on staff now, however. Hope he picks a woman with a good job.

Associated Press
EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- Former Penn State quarterback Kevin Thompson was signed by the New York Giants as a free agent on Tuesday.

Thompson, who did not play in 2003, has played in one NFL game. He saw his most extensive action in NFL Europe in 2001.

With Eli Manning established as the Giants' No. 1 quarterback following the release of Kerry Collins last week, Thompson will be trying to earn one of the two backup jobs.

His competition will come from four-year veteran Jesse Palmer; Ryan Van Dyke, who is playing for Cologne in NFL Europe; and free agent Jared Lorenzen of Kentucky.

A former co-captain at Penn State, Thompson was signed by the Cleveland Browns as a rookie free agent in 2000. He played in one game that season. It was against Jacksonville, which was then coached by current Giants coach Tom Coughlin.

Thompson completed his only NFL pass, an 8-yarder to Jamel White. Thompson hurt his ankle the following week in practice and finished the season on injured reserve.

Thompson spent three weeks of the 2001 season on Cincinnati's practice squad. He was signed late in 2002 by Cleveland and was the Browns' third quarterback in their playoff game at Pittsburgh.

Thompson's most extensive action since college occurred in 2001 with Frankfurt in NFL Europe. Splitting time with Michael Bishop, he was 66-of-124 (53.2 percent) for 577 yards, two touchdowns and eight interceptions.

As a senior at Penn State, Thompson was 133-of-242 (55 percent) for 1,916 yards, 13 touchdowns and nine interceptions.

I had read that the only reason they signed that guy from Penn State was to work the WRs out at camp while Eli is learning the playbook and Jesse is out playing bachelor.
