I find the idea of a gay leading character in wrestling quite amusing and feel that it can really be played up considering the insecurities of pro atheletes in general...ie...it is extremely believable!! What I'm curious to know is...
How many fans here would be offended or upset if their favourite wrestler really WAS a homosexual?? Would you find him/her any less credible or entertaining to watch??
I personally have no predjudices against gays/lesbians and would not be bothered either way but I am interested to hear the opinions of...what I imagine to be...the male oriented fan-base as they are almost always presented as having such an "issue" with homosexuality in general

Really wouldn't bother me to know that one of the WWE boys is gay, mainly becuase it wouldn't surprise me. I happen to know a guy who is one heckuva performer who just happens to be gay, but the guy puts on a show stealer everyweek. As far as my opinions on the whole gay/lesbian thing, I'm a Christian so I don't support it, I'm not homophobic or anything, I just don't support it myself. BTW: I'm actually a big Rico mark, I think his ring work is tremendous and he does a really good job of playing his charachter. Another worker I know was trained by Adrian Street, and Rico actually went to Adrian to study how to pull the gimmick off. Just thought I would share that.

if anyone would stop cheering for their fav wrestler because they found out he was a homosexual, they've probably got some issues to work out. I mean - you're basically asking "who here is prejudiced against gays?"
You can disagree with homosexuality without disowning the people who are gay. Those who disown gays based on their sexuality usually try to justify their prejudice by claiming "moral concern," but that's rarely the case.
So I guess thats a "no."
EDIT: If I found out a wrestler was gay, I actually would probably be compelled to cheer for him MORE . . . but then again, maybe that's favoritisim.
It wouldn't bother me at all. Gay people are just people, like anyone else. Homophobia is for the narrow-minded, and I wouldn't lose any respect for my favorite wrestlers if they turned out to be gay. It is a pretty homoerotic business, anyway, and I wouldn't be surprised in the least if some of these guys were gay.
Didnt some wrestler in the GWF turn out to be gay? Terry Simms I believe.
And, I find it really amazing that anyone can be against gay people these days. I mean, I am not gay and I never want to be gay, but I dont get why the majority seems to fear and/or hate gay people. Religion teaches many silly things, and homophobia is one of them.

Religion doesn't teach homophobia, hate to burst your bubble. Does it preach agaisnt homosexuality? Yes, but that doesn't equate to being homophibic, nor does it equate to hating gays for their choice of lifestyles. Just means that we don't support it.
When I leave this world, I want to go the same way I came in, naked, covered in goo, and screaming in fear! LAter God bless Mercer

It's not so much that they are prejudiced but that a fan may find that a wrestler...built as a huge brute killer drooling monster etc etc..is less believable when it turns out that he's gay in real life.
The portrayal of gays in the WWE NOW creates that image...Rico is not considered for his wrestling skills but for the laughs he pulls in when he grabs some other man's ass !! This made me curious as to what the fan-base here thought about homosexuality and wrestling and perhaps how the two fit together...or not as the case may be
And Mercer...by preaching that homosexuality is morally wrong...you are creating homophobics and strength in the idea that homosexuality is "against the norm" when in reality it is only against God's will...and sorry...but the big guy "as YOU perceive him" doesn't speak for me

I see your point, but that's still prejudice. A person would basically be drawing the conclusion that "all gays are wusses."
Which is pre-judice.
EDIT: Is suppose I should have used the word phrase "biased against" in my first post, as that would be the better word.

I actually see that as more of a stereotype...but perhaps we are mincing words here...I guess I am curious as to how our pre-conceived notions of "MANLY" affect how we view the athletes in our lives

Prejudice/stereotype is more or less the same thing, yes.
I see your question more clearly now. I guess what threw me off is that you used the word "offended" when you asked how people would feel if they found out X brute was gay, which implied the fan might have some kind of "moral disagreement," (be it legit or feigned.)
As for an answer to you question, I wouldn't presuppose that a MANLY wrestler must be hetero, but I'm not really your target survey.
