Oh yeah, does anyone have an idea how the supplemental draft will work? I'm told that it has changed to more of a weighted lottery system.

I really would like to know what the hell Mike Sherman was thinking trading our 4th and 5th round picks to move up in th 3rd to draft a punter. Other than that I was happy with the draft

As for Wisconsin guys, I would've guessed that LB Jeff Mack would go before QB Jim Sorgi, but Sorgi got drafted and Mack didn't. At least Sorgi has time to add weight while sitting behind the Iron Man. Alex Lewis to the Lions wasn't a shocker, especially in the fifth round. They're going to have A LOT of guys go next year.

As for the Jags on day two....I HATE HATE HATE HATE that they traded Kevin Johnson for a 4th round pick, only to draft a receiver. I'm sorry, but KJ would be a GREAT #3 receiver, or a good #2 if 1st round Reggie Williams needs time. Instead, I suppose they'll use Troy Edwards at the #3 spot. I think DT Anthony Maddox will be a surprise, and their 5th and 7th rounders were good value picks(TM Mel Kiper) as well.

San Diego would be crazy wasting a 1 pick in a supplemental draft at this point. Considering the Chargers and Giants will both be throwing rookie QB's to the wolves, its extremely possible they could have two picks in the Top 5 or higher next season. Plus, having the sign Rivers lessens the money they would have available in the rookie pool for Williams, thus a potential hold-out/poor cap situation could occur.

The Giants' fan favorite during the early 1980's was Scott Brunner. After all, IIRC, Brunner was taller and built more solid than Simms (who always seemed to be getting hurt). Brunner was also a few years younger than Simms. It was Brunner in 1981 who led the Giants to their first post-season victory since the Johnson Administration. Yet looking back now, with the benefit of over twenty years worth of hindsight, it seems silly to think that anyone would want Brunner as their starting quarterback over Simms.

Of course, the Brunner/Simms situation is just one of the many in NFL history. Tom Landry spent the first seven games of the 1971 season alternating Craig Morton and Roger Staubach, trying to decide who should be his full-time quarterback. Morton had been the team's starting QB the previous year when they won the NFC title and came within a field goal of winning Super Bowl V. Morton would later in his career lead the Denver Broncos to Super Bowl XII. Hindsight, however, makes the choice of Staubach over Morton crystal clear.

Or consider the Pittsburgh Steelers of the early 1970's, when they had Terry Bradshaw, Terry Hanratty and Joe Gilliam fighting for the starting QB job. Gilliam had won the job in 1974 but lost it to Bradshaw in mid-season. While that 1974 Steelers team would win Super Bowl IX with Bradshaw starting at quarterback, the QB position was again up for grabs when the 1975 season began. I remember Bradshaw joking in a 1975 Monday Night pre-game interview that Head Coach Chuck Noll must use a three-sided coin to make the decision on which QB would be that game's starter. Again however, hindsight makes what was then a complicated decision look so easy in retrospect.

There are at least another hundred examples. Both Johnny Unitas and Len Dawson were cut early in their careers. In more recent times Kurt Warner went un-drafted and unwanted after finishing college. My point is that out of all the positions on the gridiron, young quarterbacks are the most difficult to correctly evaluate when it comes to predicting their potential for success.

So how then should Giants fans feel about the trade for Eli Manning? Let's go back to the Phil Simms example. During the years that Brunner was the fans' favorite to be the starting QB, there was never any doubt that Simms was the man Giants' GM George Young thought should be the team's number one quarterback. Therefore the real question for Giants fans of that time shouldn't have been who's the better quarterback, Simms or Brunner, but whose ability to evaluate young QBs do we have more faith in, George Young's or our own? Likewise today, there is absolutely no doubt that Eli Manning is the man Ernie Accorsi, the Giants general manager, wanted. So the question for the Giants fans of today when critiquing how their team did in this year's draft is whose judgment of young QBs do you have more faith in, yours or his?

Great move by San Diego for getting their QB, 2 lineman, and a WR (soon.)

As for the Eagles, I like the pick of Andrews. They now have two options for LT next year when Thomas leaves. They can plug in Hicks or Andrews. Offensive line was an immediate need since Welborne was gone and the loss of Bobby Williams meant there was no depth on the left side. Plug Hicks in and you are left with no backups, not a good situation to be in.

I like Matt Ware in the third round and especially like the picks of Dexter Wynn and Bruce Perry to bolster the return corps.

I think J.R. Reed is going to be a great pickup for the Eagles. He wasn't going to go earlier than he did because of his size, but he will be very good for a fourth round pick, I think. As someone who's watched him play for the last three years here at USF, I will tell you he seems to have the big play mentality. Obviously dominating games at, say, Miami or Oklahoma would be different than be a great force at USF, but I still see big things for him.

But wouldn't it be easier for San Diego to burn their No. 1 on Williams, knowing that they'll still have the Giants' No. 1 to burn in the regular draft?

Well, yeah if you think the Giants go 2-14 and are a top 3 pick. Otherwise, I figure next year's draft will be stronger, even more so than Williams.

Then agian, the Ravens burn that pick on Williams if it's available....

I anxiously waited through three hours of the draft to see the Cowboys number one pick. As it got closer I got more and more excited as it looked like Stephen Jackson would still be on the board at No. 22.

After 21, when it was for sure that Jackson would be there, I called my brother (long distance) and celebrated that we were getting BY FAR the best RB in the draft.

Then....the trade down.

It was the most obvious Bill Simmons "set myself on fire" moment of my sport-fan life.

A quick aside - The first 30-45 minutes of the draft, with Eli being booed and looking like his face was going to crack and Archie about to blow a fuse....combine it with the fact that it was a live broadcast WITH MICHAEL IRVIN....that was the best half hour of television I've seen in some time.

Doesn't ScreamingHeadGuy do a fashion report for the WWE? I'd like to see his comments on Irvin's mono colored suit.

For a half second, I thought he was topless. It looked like, to me, the same shade as his skin. Suit, tie, shirt and all.

As a Pac-10 fan, let me tell you that I think Steven Jackson is nothing special. Before the Beavers had Jackson at TB they had Ken Simonton, who had three 1000-yard seasons. Simonton was a 175-lb. guy who ran like he was 230 lbs. Jackson, OTOH, got 1000 yards but always seemed to me like a 230-lb. guy who ran like he was 175 lbs. Talk about a guy who's frustrating to watch, he could run well in open space, but in traffic he wasn't breaking many tackles, and there's less open space in the "L" than when you're playing the likes of Eastern Kentucky or UNLV. A 230-lb. guy who won't take on a COLLEGE corner to get a couple of extra yards doesn't exactly seem to be a guy I think of Parcells drafting.

I think of a guy like Antowain Smith when I envision Steven Jackson's pro career. I'd rather have Jones, myself.

It should take Reggie Williams about two games to match R. Jay Soward's career reception total of 14.

Do you ever feel that some gm's get too damn cutesy for their own good?

According to an article on NFL.com (Brandt, I think), it is no longer a lottery system as it used to be. They are now using the same draft order as the "regular" draft.

Yep, see below regarding Sherman, Mike (never trust a guy with two first names).

He's Mike Sherman. He hasn't proven anything in the drafting category yet (how about last year, with only 2 of 9 picks seeing any playing time?).

[sarcasm] Hey, he punts left footed -- that makes it tougher to catch the ball [/sarcasm]

How about a guy who watched him play for four years?

Not only is Evans a fast guy who could probably beat 80% of the corners in the league, but he catches EVERYTHING. I think I've seen him maybe drop two catchable balls in four years. His knee injury made him a little gimpy last year, but he quickly got over that (in one of his first games back he had no trouble going 98 yards on a score). I imagine that Buffalo was looking for a solid #1/#2 reciever, and I don't think (and I'll admit my bias) you could find a better guy. Having grown up a Vikings fan, I'd compare him to a much faster Chris Carter.

    (edited by Excalibur05 on 25.4.04 1453)

What HE said.

Seriously, since Peerless Price left, Buffalo's been aching for a deep threat and a guy to complement Eric Moulds. Evans is incredibly fast and has excellent hands.

I was really happy with the Bills' draft overall. They got offense like they needed, plus they drafted their only weakness on defense: defensive tackle. All this constituted the sig change. :)

Every coach that we media-types asked about B.J. Sander (the punter we took in the 3rd) said that the left-footed kicking, combined with a low drop point, actually makes this kid something special. I'd hope to agree...the last time we drafted a special-teamer high to replace a fixture on the Packers...well, here's a jog down memory lane:

1997: Lost K Chris Jacke, drafted K Brett Conway, sucked, got lucky with the ascendance of K Ryan Longwell

2004: Lost P Josh Bidwell, drafted P B.J. Sander...to be continued...

At least we beefed up the secondary...but standing toe-to-toe with Ahmad Carroll in the bowels of Lambeau Field at one point, I realized *I'm taller than him. Terrell Buckley, anybody? The kid better be good...but at least he'll go down in Packer history for one thing: during the conference-call interview w/ Green Bay media on Day 1 of the draft, he became the first Packer to use the word "crunk" in an interview.

That spinning sound you hear is Vince in his grave. "WHAT THE HELL'S GOING ON UP THERE!?"

I'm actually not freaking out that we only took one offensive guy (a center, in case Flanagan has to plug various holes injury might poke in the O-line) out of 6 guys. The Pack's offense is good as it is; it's the D that needed help.

Oh, one point of clarification...I had a bit more access than most of y'all. I was working for my employer during the draft weekend. We were set up in the visitors' locker room at Lambeau Field covering the draft. Huh huh huh...I took a whiz where the Bears do.

BJ Sander is Awesome. He won the Buckeyes a few games, especially the one against Purdue this past year. The offense did nothing, but Sander kept pinning the Boilers inside the 10. If I remember right, of his ten punts that game, nine were inside the 20. Eventually the defense came up with a touchdown. He hit punts over 60 yards in five different games. Now, I don't know if that is worth a third round pick, but the guy is as good as punters come.

I like what the Titans did. They really didn't have money to sign a first round pick, so they traded out and ended up filling most of their holes. For the second straight year, the guy they wanted fell to them in round two. Last year it was Calico, this year Troupe. Floyd Reese does a great job reloading in the draft. If two of the five d-linemen they selected pan out they should have enough for another run.

My concern with Sander was the comments I read regarding him having a three step approach (makes for blockable kicks), and the fact that he drifts in his approach to the line (makes for blockable kicks), as well as the fact that he likes to directional kick (say it with me, makes for blockable kicks). Because directional kicking involves drifting in the direction of the kick as you approach the line, you're making it a shorter distance for the end guy to get to you. That's why you rarely see directional kicking in the NFL anymore, you see guys trying to hang it high and let the gunners run underneath the ball.

Knowing that it's tough to change these basics without screwing your punting up (see Stemke, Kevin), I'm very concerned about another Ray Stachowicz.

Mack's already signed with the Vikings (who could use some LB and special teams help anyway), so I think he'll be all right.
