Once again, live after the fact from Florida, it's more rantings and ravings from a demented mind in Central Florida.

For the most part for me, Backlash 2004 was okay-to-very-good across the board. Some of my complaints are pretty nitpicky, I will concede. And the fact that most of it was at least okay may give it a more positive impact on me than, say, Wrestlemania XX. A breakdown of the PPV, match-by-match:

Heat match - Val Venis vs. Matt Hardy - Holy shit, Edmonton loves Matt Hardy. Clearly, the wrong guy is playing the face and the wrong guy is also playing the heel here. I swear, I'd turn him face if it wasn't for a lack of strong heels for him to face and to build him up. Unfortunately, poor Matt loses to Val - the guy that sources that 411 is cut-n-pasting from say Creative has no ideas for. Ouch.

Shelton "It's All About The" Benjamin vs. Ric Flair - wow, enjoyable opener. Would've liked to see more consistent selling of the leg by Benjamin, but that's nitpicking. Benjamin's push continues and that's a good thing. Flair helps him to look good, though I'm pretty sure Benjamin deserves his share of the credit for such a good opener.

Coach vs. Tajiri - first impression of this match? "What, Benjamin and Flair have to go on before fucking Coach?" Impression shortly after the match started? "Wow, Coach threw an armdrag or two - clearly, he watched the WCW Dennis Rodman PPV matches to train for this one..." To his credit, Coach won me over and actually looked fairly good in there, showing off a few moves or three. I'd almost be tempted to take him out of the commentator's booth and make him a wrestler full-time - at worst, you'd have a decent jobber to the stars; at best, you might just have a decent mid-card heel. Before the match started, I really would've thought Tajiri needed to win - I mean, come on, they can't have him job to fucking Coach, can they? Then again, as another poster put it, it's not like they were going to push him.

Y2J vs. Christian and Trish "Slut" Stratus - okay match. Nice to see Christian and Trish get theirs and Jericho get a measure of revenge. Didn't feel like a blowoff, but if done properly, this feud could continue to June for a proper blowoff.

Eugene skit - fuck. The one problem about taping PPVs as they happen is that I really can't change the channel when he comes on. Fuck!! I'm not PC by any means, but I really do find myself getting offended by seeing this, ahem, character on my TV - to the point of turning off RAW anytime he comes on.

WWE Women's Title Match - Victoria (champ) vs. Lita - One of the benefits to the Trish heel turn is that there's one less obstacle to Victoria becoming the future Mrs. RageRockrr. I find myself enjoying her matches, and her TV personality is winning me over. Loved the kiss with the young fan (future out-of-context quote there). Of course, it sure doesn't hurt Victoria that she's damn sexy. Match was okay, and the right woman won. One thought about the run-in - does that mean we have more Victoria vs. Molly (and as good as Molly is, I really would rather see Victoria become a dominant woman's champion for at least the next six months)? Or Victoria vs. Gail - which some/many might not really care about?

(Okay, I bet I may get seriously flamed and lose a shitload of rep points for this next part... but so be it.)

No Holds Barred, Falls Count Anywhere, Intercontinental Title, God-Damn-It-We're-Going-To-Push-Randy-Orton-Down-Your-Damn-Throats- And-You-Will-Damn-Well-Learn-To-Worship-Him Match - Randy Orton (champ) vs. Mick Foley / Cactus Jack -
I understand that Mick hasn't wrestled full-time since 2000. I understand that Mick's going to have a lot of non-wrestling stuff coming up in the coming months. I understand that there are actually people out there (poor and misguided as they might be) who actually like Randy Orton. And yes, some people may call me hypocritical for wanting to see Foley go over in this feud, and trashing Austin for going over and being a non-wrestler. Of course, the difference between Austin and Foley is that Foley never walked out on the WWE, never beat on his wife (at least, that we're aware of), and can actually still bring something interesting to the show, be it amazing promos or even wrestling on a very limited basis. Austin was broken down, wrestling-wise, promo-wise, and character-wise, by late 2001.

(Before I get to the match itself - anyone wonder when Bischoff came out that, just maybe, the fire marshall said to someone in back, "He'd better not light that up, or I'll shut down this show right now!!" ?)

But tonight's match is the thing here. And would it really have killed everyone involved to let Foley win the title, then vacate it on RAW the next night because he's proved his point and Orton's gotten what he deserved?? (Answer: No, that would've been fine and life would've gone on.) And does anyone find it odd that Orton's supposedly the longest-reigning champion in the last seven years... having held the title for barely four months (Oh, and by the way, he's wrong - the Rock held the IC Title from December 1997 to August 1998, finally losing to Orton's buddy HHH at Summerslam 98. So Orton doesn't even have that right!)?

However, Orton still gets the Jesus push and Mick continues to look like a loser and idiot, and not a three-time-former WWE champion. Orton has done damn near nothing in this feud. Nothing. Other than beating the shit out of Foley, giving promos that lack the emotion and passion that Foley brings, letting Mick beat up on him a little bit, he's done nothing... no, wait, actually, he's done something. He's gotten clean win after clean win over a man he's tormented and embarassed. The point of the heel doing that is that he needs to get his comeuppance. Did he take a bump on the thumbtacks? Yes. Did he take a bump off the ramp into tables, and then take a Foley elbow off the ramp? Yes. But Foley did most of the bumping and giving in that match. Orton, meanwhile, gets plenty of time to rest up and recover from what few bumps he took. I don't even think the barbed wire bat got scratched over his face that much, if at all. I swear, it's like Mick talking about Japanese wrestler Tiger Jeet Singh, who took, took, took from other wrestlers to stay over.

After watching Orton kick out from barbed wire bat shots, elbows off the ramp after being thrown off the ramp, etc., suspending my disbelief was no longer a possibility. I knew Foley was going to lose and Orton was going to win - just like I knew Foley was going to be the one taking the bump on the barbed-wire board. What bullshit. After all the punishment he took from Foley, Orton just needed to stay down for three. For just one night. Instead, I get Randy Orton as fucking Superman. What Bizarro universe have I fallen into where HHH jobs more than fucking Randy Orton???

So yeah, I didn't like the outcome of this match - nor parts of the match itself - very much at all. Let's move on, shall we?

Hurricane & Rosie vs. La Rez - ah, the match-added-at-the-last-minute. Mediocre match, with another Eugene appearance. Oh joy. Next.

Edge vs. Kane - wow, to think Kane was the same wrestler I thought might just win the WWE Raw World Heavyweight Title at Armaggedon 2003! Alas, how the mighty have fallen. And WWE? I don't care how much money Rob Zombie wants for the rights to it, just splurge and get "Never Gonna Stop (Red Red Groovy)" back as Edge's theme. So many posters say that Edge just seems so... so 2000 lately. Going back to his old theme music, when he was a tag team wrestler, from 2000, isn't helping things. "Never Gonna Stop" always popped the crowd. I will agree that Edge looks a little bit more HHH than Edge, but not quite as bad as some are making it seem.

Main Event - WWE Raw World Heavyweight Championship Triple Threat Match (Again) - HHH vs. HBK vs. Chris Benoit (champ) - honestly, I liked the Wrestlemania match better, compared to this one. Benoit was just punked out during so many times of this match. And after the whole HBK/Earl Hebner shit in the middle, I never want to hear HBK, HHH, or Vince McMahon bitch about someone bringing up Montreal 97, ever again. But the right guy won in the end - and with Benoit doing it with the Sharpshooter on HBK in Alberta, Canada? Nice touch there.
Holy shit, Nancy Sullivan Benoit looks different now that she's out of wrestling. And Benoit's youngest kid? Holy Chris Junior, Batman!! I sooooo would've marked out to see him get in the ring with Dad and imitate Dad's thumb-slashing-the-throat. That would've ruled.

All things considered (and Orton-Foley match aside), this was an okay-to-very-good PPV. A continued Benjamin push, Jericho gets revenge, Benoit continues as champ, Coach shows that he can (kinda) wrestle... we had some good things here.

Edit: Changed Ms. to Mrs., corrected some boldface tags, and added a sentence or two to my Foley-Orton rant.
Edit 2: Fixed the header to my Foley-Orton rant.

I don't think anyone mentioned it, but here's what happened after, presumably, the ppv went off the air.

Benoit was in the ring celebrating and got a mic. As Shawn Michaels was heading back up the ramp, Benoit says on the mic "You screwed Bret! But you also tapped out! Come back here! I'll make you tap out again in 15 seconds!" The crowd alternates chants between "You tapped out!" and "You screwed Bret!" to which Shawn played it up and was acting outraged and restrained by the ref but left.

Then Triple H came out and got a mic and ripped on the redneck Canadian fans and said that Benoit wouldn't be able to make him tap out again. At which point he rushed in to the ring and was immediately placed in the crippler crossface to which he tapped out to shortly after to a huge roar from the crowd.

So the crowd was already all happy and excited, but this was icing on the cake!

For some reason TWC Houston decided that since I ordered the PPV that I should get the replay free as well. The TV was on in the background for awhile as we cleaned up and friends went home and I sat down to have a drink and wind down. The Foley/Orton match was much better in the moment(kinda like the Hell in the Cell match with Taker)
and really wasn't much more than SPOTrestSPOTwalk...

Who is the new interview tool in the back? They need Mene Gene back there conducting some real one on ones!

What do you suppose happened when Orton and Foley disappeared in the back? It didn't seem planned to me, and it really looked like Orton wanted a chance to get those tacks out of his hand(some looked like they were in the web inbetween his fingers!!).

Reply to RageRockerr here.

How could they have let Foley win, even for one night. IMO the result of the match was given away by Foley's IMMENSE book tour kicking off at the end of June, which he is contractually bound into.
The only thing in my mind was would Orton take hits or not, and by God he did.
This is an early contender for match of the year. Forget the "superman" mindset, and perhaps consider the age and fitness levels of the two superstars.
I'm pretty sure this will be Foley's last ever "real" hardcore match, but then again, he has already told us "he is theoretically available for competing at SummerSlam".
I really like Randy Orton, and think he is the next batch of World Championship material.

Now I will buy an Evolution t-shirt and be a heel-fan. :)

"Foley did most of the bumping and giving in that match."

What the Hell are you smoking? Have you ever *seen* a wrestler "take and take and take"? Hint: It usually doesn't involve the selfish guy diving onto thumbtacks, getting his ass kicked for ten minutes and hurling himself off of a stage for a dangerous flying elbow spot.

I swear, if Orton went out and had a ***** match with Jon Heidenreich tomorrow, people would STILL claim he was a talentless spoonfed shit.

Well said. Orton proved himself to a lot of people last night, and he's definitely main event material.

While I didn't see the PPV, it's going to take a lot more than "Randy proving he can take a beating" to make him a ME'er. His promos/mic skills are still pedestrian, he can't emote (his "fear" during the Foley feud looked more like "ooh, acid reflux"), he's still pretty ordinary in the ring, and he still has a tendency to hit his finisher sloppily (vs. Jericho, in the tag match the Raw before the PPV).

But, hey, he can land on thumbtacks and dive off a stage. Whoo. I'll give him credit for putting his body on the line, but I'm not calling him a ME'er, much less the future of the company, right now.

I saw exactly the same thing, Geemoney. Flair did his "three steps and fall flat on my face" bumps and the knucks went. I figured they'd changed the ending to the match after that. I may be wrong, but I guessed the plan was for Flair to get the chair, ref to be distracted getting rid of the chair, while Flair levels Benjamin with the knucks for the win. Trouble is, the old man's lost the duster....

As for the rest of the show, I was impressed that Orton took the beating he did. I said in the prediction thread that he didn't have it in him...I'll happily stand corrected. On a personal note, I absolutely detest hardcore wrestling, but if you're gonna do it, this match was a great example.

Main Event was OK. I thought it dragged a bit, and wasn't as good as WMXX. I was surprised they made Shawn tap...I figured that he'd be feuding one on one with Benoit for the next few months, and not tapping would give him greater credibility. Mega heat from the crowd for both him and Hebner. I can't see a heel turn tonight though...

I have a lot more respect for Coach today, actually. The entire bar I was in winced when Tajiri dropkicked the back of his head while he was in the Tree of Woe.

Foley-Orton wasn't Royal Rumble 2000-caliber, and the triple threat wasn't a patch on Wrestlemania XX. But still, damn good matches and the right people went over, so all right then.

I missed the first half of Flair-Benjamin, but what I saw looked okay. Benjamin seemed a little sloppy -- the dragon whip and the top-rope clothesline were awkward -- but I guess we can chalk that up to nervousness.

Edge/Kane was just kind of sad. They weren't even trying -- and by "they" I include the bookers who just threw this mess out there.

I'll sum it up like this. Backlash is everything that Judgment Day won't be.

After a quarter of a century on this planet, there's three things I know for sure...
1)Ain't nothing like a Dirty Pair marathon on New Year's Eve.
2)I'd make a fine Mrs. HHH II.
3) I'd make an acceptable Mrs. Orton.

Few thoughts on Backlash

+ Flair dropped the knucks 4 times? Including at the 1 minute mark and still kept stuffing them back to his left kneepad. Shelton wins again and maybe developing some sort of new finisher now (flying clothesline?) Oh an Flair was doing the 'old skool' sell which made me laugh my ass off (the fall flat on face and the beg off opponent and then thumb to eye)

+ Coach has been taking wrestling lessons (well, one anyway). Tajiri must look at his position in the company when he is jobbing to a non wrestler in a feud that lasted 2 weeks

+ Victoria is trying to hard to be faceish. Kissing kids (although sweet), wearing little clothing and constantly smiling does not make a face although I'm not mad at her because she can actually wrestle, coming to...

+ Lita - she seems to be getting more dangerous every time she wrestles, she no longer has the confidence for high flying after the neck injury and once that is taken away there is not much of a character left

+ RANDY F'N ORTON - Randy actually earned my respect at Backlash, i never thought he would take the thumbtack bump although i was disappointed he didn't hit the barbed wire board ( the tables don't count because you can see the mats under them). Mick Foley needs to realise there is a difference between coming back to get someone over and coming back to job to someone, if Mick Foley doesn't get a clean victory over Randy Orton soon then its pretty much wasted time. A heel needs his comeuppance. Oh and Randy doesn't seem to know his history, he is not the longest in 7 years as already mentioned by someone. One of my friends thought this was so funny he spit beer across the room when he said it.

+ Dammit Edge is boring and has no substance to his character.

+ HBK actually looked insulted at the crowd, thought he would be used to it by now. Did anyone else spot what he did during his elbow from top rope? Watch it again (he basically insulted the crowd but is hard to explain). The Earl Hebner spot made me laugh but didn't for a moment think it would finish like that, this would of caused a riot. Right man won in the end, good match if not a predictable result.

Good PPV overall, worth the money and will be interesting to see RAW on Friday.

Spotty PPV, but the two big matches delivered big.

The best part about Foley/Orton was the revelation that Orton came to, right as he got slammed down onto the tacks. It showed on his face perfectly, that, "Oh shit, what have I gotten myself into?" look. And then he started shaking, like he was about to go into convulsions from the pain.

No one in my house liked Orton going into it, but by the end, we were believers. And Foley is the undisputed master of putting other guys over, while making himself look even better in the process. If more people had his attitude, there would never be a "down cycle" in wrestling, because the roster would be consistently full of superstars.

And if the Candian fans wanted an apology for Montreal, I think last night's about as close as they're gonna get. The crowd essentially turned the match into a fatal four-way, keeping Michaels occupied when Benoit and HHH were knocked out.

Would've like to see Benoit crank down more on the sharpshooter, though, since that was the finish.

Randy's mic skills are better than Benoits. No doubt. His facial expressions have been great throughout his Foley fued, most people here have agreed on that. And you can't totally blame Orton for the botched RKO. Jericho, the veteran didn't let go of the Walls.

The guy is 23 years old, he's well ahead of the game, maybe even too far ahead.

First, Triple H shuts a lot of people up by tapping out at WrestleMania and then losing to Shelton Benjamin. Now Shawn Michaels shoves it up everyone's ass by SUBMITTING TO THE SHARPSHOOTER IN CANADA. That's a gift wrapped fuck you with a big bow around it.

I think people are being a little too hard on Edge. He gets about two weeks of promos then thrown on TV to get a cheap pop. He spears Bischoff for no reason. Gets thrown into a feud with Kane for no reason. Gets barely ANY mic time. His mic work sounded good but there's no issue between him and Kane. Now he comes out and the crowd is totally distracted with Earl Hebner, for one. And it's a totally cold feud, for two. WWE has dropped the ball so far with Edge's return. Hopefully they can salvage it tonight in Calgary. As for the match itself, Edge looked good. A little rusty.

Kane has looked ABSOLUTELY ATROCIOUS for the past month or so. He just looks like he doesn't care but why should he? They take off his mask, squander his momenteum by having him sell for Shane McMahon more then anyone, then they feed him to The Undertaker for the millionth time. He had one shot at being a Main Eventer again and it's gone. He's just gonna be that big midcarder forever.

I like The Coach managing Garrison Cade. People hate Coach and Cade is a damn fine wrestler. Hopefully the heat will transfer and Cade can break out as a singles star.

Quickie thoughts and some ratings-I'll probs do a recap before the week is out, but I've watched the show twice already and I'm not really in the mood for a third notebook-assisted round.

-I kinda realised halfway through the match that having Shelton lose screwily to Flair would probably have opened up a Hella lot more options than the finish they went for, but the match was solid and it's another big name to add to his hitlist, so I can't complain too much. They need to push the Hell out of an Orton/Benjamin IC title feud over the next few months. **1/2

-For a non-wrestler working a serious match against a cruiserweight, Coach Vs. Tajiri wasn't half-bad. Not what you'd call good or anything, but probably more interesting to watch than some lame-ass comedy clusterfuck. And any angle that gets Garrison Cade some airtime is A-OK by me. Bold Prediction: The Cade/Coach combo manage a tag team title reign before the summer is out. 1/2*

-The handicap match suffered a little from a similar feeling I had during the opening contest. It was obvious from the early-goin that Jericho was going over in superface fashion, but another slimy win for the heels could've opened up some doors to expand the feud and maybe bring in some new characters. Still, another good match. ***

-The more and more I see the Eugene character, the less and less I'm offended by him. They're really not making fun of him in any way, and so far it's been all narrow-minded heels responsible for the meanness towards him. Plus, the crowd seemed really fond of him when he ran in on the tag team match. After just two weeks of appearances, that's gotta be taken as a good sign.

-Hmm, the women's match. Vic was feeling it on a grand scale and just about managed to drag Lita above "total abomination", but it still wasn't anything to write home about. Nice to see them putting Molly and Ms. Kim back in the mix, and equally nice to see that Gail's joined the Unfeasibly Large Breast Implants For Her Frame Club. *

-Foley/Orton, Foley/Orton....There were so many little things in this match, as well as the obligatory big spots, that made this such an amazing watch. Orton showed a whole new level to his persona with some of his little touches. Did you catch him swiping away Socko and staring horrified into the camera, his face bloodied? What about his shellshocked sell of the thumbtacks, rather than the usual histrionic spaz-attacks you'd expect? And Foley, of course, proved for more adept at getting over new talent than some of his detractors. ****1/4

-The tag match=filler. 3/4*

-Edge Vs. Kane was the one really blown opportunity of the evening. The Johnny Nitro story was right there for exploitation, and could have been used to a)Save Kane face, b)Get Edge some sympathy, and c)Drag this feud out into something more than "Edge is back! Let's put him against Kane!". Bleh. *1/4

-I'm going to get mocked for this call, I reckon, but the main event was a ***** match for me. Awesome hot crowd+no real downtime+superbly nuanced finish=SWANK. How could you not love this match?

The guy is 23 years old, he's well ahead of the game, maybe even too far ahead.

I'll give you the point on mic skills vis-a-vis Benoit, but they're still nothing special. At least Benoit has other attributes that make up for it (i.e. the ability to bust out great matches and make others look better than they are). And that's the other thing - Foley carried that entire feud. It'll be interesting to see how he is without a guy like Foley to cover up his weaknesses. I have serious doubts he can carry a feud on his shoulders, something he'll be expected to do if he wants to be considered a ME'er/upper card player.

As for his facial expressions - I can only go by what he showed on Raw, but I never got "fear" from him. At least twice they had Foley cut a promo about what he'll do to Orton, and each time they gave Orton a chance to show fear, and each time he failed to deliver (IMO). He gave more of an "annoyed grimace" than "holy crap, I'm in trouble!".

There's talk of a possible Orton/Benjamin feud (or, at least people have speculated that's the direction they might take). It'll be interesting to see. I like Benjamin a hell of a lot more than Orton, but I don't think either guy can carry a feud, so each is going to have to step it up big time.

"Too far ahead of the game"? I wouldn't go that far. He's still got a lot to do to make himself the big time player the WWE wants him to be.

OK, two things.

First of all - Why not give the belt to Shawn? You compared him to Bob Holly, but, gimme a break - Shawn is extremely credible and over w/ tons of charisma, he is everything Holly isn't. I don't see any reason in the world why a short HBK title reign is out of the question -

in fact . . .

IF I WERE BOOKER(TM), I would have Benoit and HBK have an on-again-off-again feud all summer long, culminating in Shawn finally winning the belt (as a heel) at Summerslam. Then, at Survivor Series, Jericho FINALLY gets his WM rematch against Shawn Michaels, this time for the title, and wins. Jericho goes to WM as champion. Benoit wins the rumble again and gets a rematch at WM 21 agaisnt Jericho for the World Championship.

EDIT:

Just to add to the Orton-praise here: His facial expression after he bladed and he was holding himself up in the ropes facing the camera showed absolute terror. Best facial I've seen in a long time. Anyone else remember this?

Also - I LOVED his sell-job on the cookie sheet. Randy just folded up backwards, contorted, and the cookie sheet-shot looked SICK. (Yes, the cookie sheet looked good, for once!) That's Orton's credit, folks, not Foley.

I know CRZ loves us very much, but there's no way he'd take up this task. I think transcribing his 1998 WCW promos was punishment enough. Transcribing Warrior drivel is what Recappers' Hell must be like.
