Apologies to the Yankees and Red Sox fans on the "Dub" -- but damned if I'm not tired of this feud.

I with you on this one, at least until the playoffs. Chris Connelly was on ESPN this morning ripping the notion of this being the best rivalry in sports. He said "Don't both teams have to have had a few meaningful wins against each other for it to be a rivalry? When's the last time the Sox won a meaningful game against the Yankees?"

Unfortunately, since it involves the cities of Boston and New York, it means the "whole world".

EDIT: For those who think I said that Boston had to win a meaningful game for it to be a rivalry, please notice the DAMN QUOTATION MARKS!!

As a baseball fan, I will never be tired of the Yankees/Sox rivalry. It IS a great rivalry, if only because the teams and fans truly hate each other. I don't know that it's the best rivalry in sports (Michigan/Ohio State football is my favorite, though I'm likely biased), but it's up there just because of the history.

"When's the last time the Sox won a meaningful game against the Yankees?"

I don't know, when's the last time Army/Navy was even "meaningful." The meaning is what you make of it. I think maybe a great rivalry is also defined by how much the games mean to the fans and competitors when they AREN'T meaningful.

Red Sox won meaningful games late in '86 to win the Division over the Yankees, and won meaningful victories when they blew the Yankees out of the water in '95 to win the Division, culminating in the night the Mick died and Steve Howe followed the first base line in from the bullpen during a bench clearing brawl.
Personally, I don't care one bit what the rest of the country thinks about the rivalry. Additionally, I've said all along that I'd prefer all 19 games NOT to be on national television, as it means having to listen to McCarver broadcast from behind Torre's colon or Joe Morgan just being his usual non-sensical self. And, there is no justification at all for them to be playing at Fenway at 8:20 in April. Until the mid 90's they generally only played day games in April due to the climate, and even after that until this year 6 PM due to the drop in temperatures (except for 7 on Friday).

I want you to know, I agree with everything I just said.

No way! If fans for both teams get up for the games more than usual, that's a great rivalry. I think Jim Rome said it very well yesterday - nothing matters in April, but everybody's buzzing for the Yankees and the Red Sox. I think that says something. Put together any other combination in baseball and people say "who cares, there are 140 games to go". Put the Yanks and Sox together and heads turn. That's a great rivalry.

A rivalry is all about who you'll talk trash about. Yankees fans could care less what Orioles fans, Braves fans, Giants fans, Mets fans, or any other fan would have to say. However, if a Boston fan bad mouths the Yankees, shit's on.

As Bob Ryan once said, "There's no rivalry between a hammer and a nail."

I suppose when/if the Sox win, all this haranging will make it all the sweeter.

Watching the first 5 home games this season, I've seen more balls go out in right field than in all the April's in the 90's combined. Have the right field roof seats, the tearing down of the back of the bleachers, and structured seats over the Monster instead of the net now ended the wind shift pattern the 600 (now 406) club caused starting in '88?

I think you have something there, Redsoxnation. It's been ludicrous this month and I was thinking along the same lines. I don't know where I'd find out for sure, though.

Considering all the talk about how Pedro doesn't have his velocity or location this season, has anyone brought up a possible problem with Mussina? I didn't see him topping 88 today on a gun that had Schilling at 94, and his location was hideous for a guy with great control. Even the start he won against the White Sox he struggled early in, and an 8'ish ERA after 4 starts doesn't bode well for an ace.
If Lowe and the Red Sox can get past Contreras on Sunday, I want to get greedy. Now, I have zero faith in Arroyo against Brown on Patriots Day. However, I have two alternative ideas: 1) Frank Castillo: Pitched well against the Yankees a few years ago, and has pitched well on Patriots Day before. 2) Wakefield on 2 days rest: I want the jugular. He's gone on 2 before and won, why not try it now. Can't be worse than rolling the dice with Arroyo. And, the added benefit is that pushing Arroyo back to mid-week gets him out of next weekend, and allows Boston to go Lowe/Wakefield/Martinez at the Stadium. Also, Wakefield has had some rough outings historically in SkyDome, so this move would take that out of the equation. Will never happen, but I want to cut the throat early if the opportunity is there.

In fairness to Pedro, his 2 bad starts were both against Baltimore, who have added many good hitters to their lineup this year. Pedro makes a convenient target for the sportswriters because he doesn't talk to them.

Now, if Pedro is still pitching like this towards the end of May, then it's time to worry.

My take is, this rivalry has always been huge, but especially because Boston hasn't yet won the big one over NY, hence that whole Bambino curse thingy. Only difference is, now ESPN and MLB smell money in the Sox/Yankees feud, so crank up the national hype machine. (It's over there in the corner, next to the old WCW Random Tag Team Generator.)

As for greatest rivalry...submitted for your approval on the football side of things: Packers/Bears. Even though we hate the Vikings more these days...Da Bears Still Suck.

But back to baseball...Brewers fans who remember the late 70's/early 80's feuds with the Yankees (Billy Martin's "Chinese aviator," anybody?) would be more than happy to see the Red Sox spank 'em this year.

(EDIT: Sox take 3 of 4 from the Evil Empire; I am pleased.)

Lobel had some nut case on 5-10 years ago with a model of Fenway, a fan, and a smoke machine tring to prove how the new club seats did change the wind pattern at Fenway. Maybe if enough of us call Channel 4 we can get Lobel to do the same thing again. It has to be better than listening to 20 minutes of "Now why can't we get players like that" while showing us clips of Tony Clark's Homerun.

GREAT game today, after yesterday's debacle. With Arroyo pitching opposite Brown and the roster stocked with second-stringers, I thought we were doomed.

Hell no. 3 out of 4 versus the Yanks works for me any day of the week. It's going to be ridiculous when Trot and Nomar come off the DL.

I had this one written in the loss column before the series started, let alone at 4-1, so that makes it an even better win. Any time you can go plus 2, its a positive. Now, they need to keep their focus and throw the knock-out punch at Toronto with Martinez/Wakefield/Schilling going the next 3 days. Working on the assumption that Tampa is not going to stick around and challenge all year, I'd like to get Toronto knocked out quickly as well; leaving only Baltimore, Boston and New York in the mix in the AL East.

Reviving the thread in order to point out that the Red Sox have owned the Yankees this season, including a sweep this weekend. How long before Steinbrenner panics and starts firing people?

Looking at the time of the post, you must not be a Red Sox fan, because no Red Sox fan claims sweep until the ump declares the 27th out official. Now, that the sweep is completed though, anytime you can pick up 5 games head to head is good, whether it be April or July. Considering the Yankees jackrabbited out to 18-3 last year, them being 8-11 this year is much better. The shocking thing about this weekend's series was the Red Sox winning 2 games the Yankees usually win, scraping together a couple of runs and shutting down the opponents bats. Fortunately for the Yankees, they get to face the top 3 pitchers for Oakland this week.
As for Steinbrenner, this will be difficult. Gerbil(Zimmer) is gone, so he can't threaten to fire him. Usually when the bats tank, he goes after the hitting coach, but the greatest (or most overrated) Yankee ever to wear the pinstripes is the hitting coach. Torre has the extension, so he can't be gone yet. With Torre sticking, I doubt he can go after the pitching coach. Thus, I say Bernie Williams will be George's target de jour.
And, wasn't it nice to hear Jeter boo'ed out of the ballpark in the 8th?
