On the plus side, Regal's back, and to me the man can do no wrong. Dinsmore, however, maybe should have refused to do this gimmick.

..yeah, and kiss all of his chances of working for Vince and company goodbye! Hell, all of you would have done the same! Nick Dinsmore, whatever the hell, who cares ?! He's on tv now and that's cool. I just wonder if he's going to stay in gimmick when he meets and greets with fans at appearences and on the street/road.

There's no way this can end inoffensively. Either Nick Dinsmore portrays an over-the-top mentally retarded character who's good in the ring...OR...he's faking it to get a contract from his Uncle Eric. Either way, it backs off on itself.

Still, I'd rather Dinsmore be faking it and reveal that to Uncle Eric after months and months of abuse at the hands of heels. Heck, erase the months of abuse and it might actually be entertaining. Months of abuse of a mentally handicapped person is NOT what I consider entertaining...but I fear that they're going down that road.

Several guys have refused gimmicks in the past. Foley is the most notable one, but as I recall Shelton Benjamin actually refused a gimmick as well. They wanted him to come out as a gangster-type, but Benjamin, who actually had been in a gang earlier in his life, refused to do that gimmick on national tv. So he waited down in OVW until they came up with the Team Angle gimmick.

What do midcard wrestlers make nowadays? $75,000? If that's the case, Dinsmore makes about three times as much jack as me, not to mention he's on national television.
"Poor Nick Dinsmore" indeed! I will go out every night and act like a giant shit-eating wombat for even that much money and the chance to be adored by millions.

Amen to that. Do people here honestly believe that when guys try to get into the WWE that they believe they'll be portraying the noble art of wrestling on TV.

A quick glance at the current RAW roster reveals:

1. A cape wearing green haired super hero who believes he can fly and enjoys calling people 'Bee-atch'.

2. An overweight Samoan who also believes himself to have superpowers and revels in the name SHIT. Also enjoys rescuing small kittens and getting stuck in phone booths.

3. A 7 foot tall demented arson victim and part-time pyromaniac with science defying skin regeneration abilities and an intermittent ability to fire lightning bolts from his fingers. In his spare time he enjoys feuding with his dead brother.

4. A Japanese immigrant with a fluctuating grasp of English and an ability to spray a variety of coloured mists on command, some of which mave the potential to cause temporary blindness.

5. An overweight gentleman with a penchant for lumberjack shirts who disables opponents through the crafty appliance of a smelly sock.

6. A Frenchman, or possibly a French Canadian, with an OUT-RAY-JOOS ACA-CENT whose sole purpose in life is to deride America and dance in an ammusing manner.

If Nick Dinsmore or anyone else looked at that and didn't realise what they were getting themselves into, they may not be retarded, but they are very, very stupid.

The storyline was initially not a bad one. Bobby Heenan claimed he could make any old wrestler a star, even one who was given a ridiculous gimmick like Red Rooster. RR doesn't like i, but then gets wins under Heenan and goes along. Then RR splits with the Brain and turns face. That's when the gimmick got bad.

If I recall correctly, at that point Bobby Heenan told Taylor he wasn't the Red Rooster when Taylor rebutted. Someone correct me if I am wrong, but after the face turn was when the clucking and what not came along.

Like I said before, if the gimmick is tastefully done, there shouldn't be any problems.

Yes, and we all know how well THAT storyline paid off.

It's gotten to the point now where I expect WWE to fail rather than succeed at any new venture or gimmick they try. I'm not holding my breath on Eugene.

I understand that, but what I'm saying is that until WWE F*cked that angle, the media craved it. Billy and Chuck were running the usual talk show gauntlet, and the Gay Rights groups backed the idea. I think they had an episode of Confidential cover it, about the time Gunn came back. WWE had the right idea of how to approach the angle, then they got sloppy and veered way off course. I was just pointing out that if WWE would only pay attention to how the angle is going with Eugene, they'll be fine.

And as for LionJeetSingh, lighten up. After 10 minutes (and I'm being generous here) of two introduction segments, which we first meet Eugene and see what he's about, how has the gimmick been exploited or insulted? Give me one example from Monday's show to prove that. I know people who have mental handicaps, and I don't see the problem. I seem to have the same twisted humor as vsp and PU, and I laughed like Hell when King got licked.

Just to draw comparison to knowing people with mental handicaps and finding it humerous, and something maybe people can relate to easier; I'm obese, and I think fat jokes are hilarious. Just have an open mind and take humor for what it's worth.

Haven't seen the character.. but "Eugene the mentally challenged guy"?

No doubt somebody in the WWE was watching CSI:Miami about a month ago, when that show had a character with the SAME EXACT name and gimmick. Eugene witnessed a shooting, and David Caruso's character befriended him.

I find it odd, since I rarely watch WWE anymore and that was the only time I had ever watched CSI:Miami.

There was a movie made about 15 years ago with Ray Liotta and Tom Hulce called "Dominic & Eugene," about a mentally handicapped guy and his big brother. The slow guy was named Eugene.

Much more likely that CSI influenced the WWE character, but still ... for what it's worth.

I did tape Raw this week, but I didn't see all of it. All I saw were the Foley and Evolution segments. I'm real hesitant to watch the tape for the Dinsmore segments. I've read a lot about him in OVW for a long time. He wasn't the guy with the Bezerker hair, is he? If he was, I think I FFed him.

If he was, well, what can I say? It's the WWE, it's what they do. My younger brother is slightly handicapped in that way. But, he's smart, and he doesn't get upset with anything. He's smarter than the creative team, there's no doubt about that. I don't know if he was watching Raw this week, but living with someone like him is something I don't laugh at.

According to pwinsider.com, WWE is actually sending out e-mail responses to people complaining about the Eugene character:

Thank you for your email to WWE. We have introduced a new character on WWE Monday Night RAW, Eugene Dinsmore. Eugene is a person with a mental disability. His dream is to become a professional wrestler.

WWE intends to portray the character of Eugene as a hero, as are the many people with disabilities around the world (many of whom are WWE fans) who must everyday face challenges to live the type of life many of us take for granted. Eugene, despite his disability, will get a chance to achieve his dream of becoming a professional wrestler. We hope that Eugene's story will encourage other people with disabilities to strive to achieve their dreams, whatever they may be.

Story background: In the recent edition of Monday Night RAW, viewers learned that Eric Bischoff, an underhanded schemer, has a nephew named Eugene. At the behest of Bischoff's sister, he has let his nephew Eugene join RAW to pursue his dream of becoming a professional wrestler. Bischoff tricks the despicable William Regal, a slimy, upper crust Englishman, to manage Eugene. Upon meeting Eugene and seeing he has a mental disability, Regal immediately complains about his task, similar to how many people who are uncaring and ignorant initially react to the mentally handicapped. However, Eugene will persevere and he ultimately will get his chance to perform in the ring. WWE is very grateful you took the time to contact us, and we thank you for your email.

Not that I was in the room or anything, but how much you wanna bet that this was close to Vince's answer when Nick Dinsmore said, "You want my gimmick to be WHAT?"

I'm sure they were selective in picking a guy who had been stuck in OVW for a pretty long time to offer a gimmick like this...the anxiety to get out of the minor leagues would have to be higher for a guy in that spot, and much less chance he'd balk at getting stuck in this role.

I'm going to reserve judgement on this one. It looks horrible enough at first glance, but it's either going to be:

-Regal pisses and moans about Eugene...until his first actual match, whereupon the "idiot boy" goes all technical and beats the guy with ease. Regal is duly impressed, and we have a new face duo.

OR

-Regal treats him like crap after he continually loses matches, until Eugene snaps and beats the hell out of him then wins a blow-off match a la Virgil and Ted DiBiase.

It could even end up going both ways, given time.

The last time they decided to do a Mr. Rogers 'People Learn Sensitivity' Storyline, the only long lasting impact was Matt Hardy jobbing to Gowen. And, could they at least get somewhat creative instead of reverting back to the 'Dream to Wrestle' storyline? They had that with Spanky and Gowen last year on SD, so they are going to recycle it on RAW this year? Where is the 7 year rule when you need it? And, historically, this type of angle works better when the wrestler starts off as a vicious heel, with the fans gradually learning he is misunderstood and they start to support him. See Rick Steiner in the Varsity Club, Foley as Mankind, and to an extent Kane (before they turned him back and forth 37 times). When it starts out as just being a sappy face angle, it turns into Evad Sullivan or Gowen.

I know I'm going to be repeating a mixture of things that others have said, but I thought I would throw my own two cents in. Mainly, I have mixed feelings about this character and wonder why they bothered.

Nick Dinsmore is a good wrestler who has been in OVW for a very long time, and no doubt it has been frustrating to him and his fans to see him working every week in Louisville when other guys (some deserving and some not so deserving) have been pulled up to the national scene at WWE. He is also known as a trainer, working with all the new guys when they come into OVW. More than once I've walked into a television taping as the doors would open for fans and see Dinsmore in his wrestling gear, wiping away sweat from a workout with the new guys and talking to the fans coming in. He's been a big spokesperson for the company when others have taken some of the limelight, and all these elements combine into giving him a lot of respect in OVW. Still, he was starting to look like someone Piper referred to in his book - a guy who is super-popular on a local scene that can never get over on a national level - so to see the move finally come at least gives one the feeling that being down in the "minors" doesn't always mean that you'll never make it to the national scene.

Further, I have to admit that I laughed as well at the antics of the character on Monday's RAW. Seeing the slow burn of Regal again was a part of that humor admittedly, but I have to give Dinsmore credit for jumping in with both feet on such a possibly damaging character.

On the other hand, having worked with people that have handicaps I can't say that the character is inspirational in any way. As with everything in wrestling, it's a caricature - as realistic as that "dead guy" over there or the "white trash millionaire" over here. To have WWE try to present Eugene as some sort of life-affirming statement to the mentally-handicapped is the biggest joke about the character there is. The character is there to laugh at, rarely with, and I'm worried that we're going to dig deeper and deeper into very weak "bad taste" humor in order to try to get the character (not to mention Regal's frustration) over with the audience.

Furthermore, where can you go with this character in the long run? Nowhere. Dinsmore cannot stay "Eugene" forever, as it is an one-joke gig. Yes, an one-joke gig that will probably last six to nine months thanks to the writers, but that's not forever in the business and eventually they'll have to either destroy the character - and as with Billy & Chuck, thus make it no longer a "life-affirming statement" - and it becomes just a cruel joke on those who really are mentally and physically challenged. Either that, or just give it up without any resolution (i.e. turning Eugene into Nick and leaving it at that).

Like I said, I did laugh a little on Monday. Probably more out of shock to see the normally slightly dull Dinsmore playing it up so much out of the blue. Even so, I can't see this ultimately be worth all the trouble they have put into it and will continue to put into it for the next several months. It's just a bomb waiting to go off, and why do that when something different and creative could have been done?

Like I said, just my thoughts.

When reading the WWE e-mail I thought, "Did they just copy and paste the exact same thing they wrote up for Zach Gowen?" But now it's not a physical disability but a mental one.

One positive is that Regal is involved, and he has a good track record of getting stuff that is horrible on paper and really make it work. Thinking back to Regal/Tajiri Japanese servant boy angle. At first it looked horrible, I mean Tajiri as a Japanese servant to Regal! BUT those two really made it work, had a great chemistry and that partnership was very entertaining and had a great WWF introduction for Tajiri, I could remember waiting for him to finally mist Regal and unload a plethora of kicks on him

But I don't think they can do the same here, you are playing with something which I don't think can work. If they are going to do the snap your fingers and he becomes an ass kicker in the ring it's still kind of belittles people with mental disabilities... I guess it could be worse. He could have joined the S.h.i.t and be a ripoff of the old In Living Color character Handyman.

I believe the Barry Windham Stalker gimmick was actually meant to debut around the time of the Rooster, so they could do a predator versus prey storyline, resulting in Terry Taylor being eaten like Pepper the dog eventually was. Then, he was supposed to emerge from the giant egg and survivor series and get his win back.
