Aaron and I are still working on different ways to navigate the board. My latest one is a quick link in the "Posts" column which, if you've marked the forum read recently (less than 101 posts showing up as "new" to you), will take you to a single page listing ALL the new posts, sorted by thread. Try it, see if you like it, tell us if it changes your life.

(Just a reminder that you can always "Mark all forums read" from the index page to establish a baseline for your NEXT visit. OR, if you think the index page is getting really cluttered, you can toggle "view quick links" to OFF by editing your profile. Also, if you're not registered or logged in, you won't see ANY of this cool stuff - maybe you should register and log in!)

I like this feature CRZ, thanks.

If you keep the forums updated and the list of new posts is fairly short, it is great. I am not sure how it would be with a lot of updates, but hey if there is a lot of updates, I won't use it....

While we're vaguely on the subject of new and natty ways to navigate the board, is there any way you could include a quick link to view threads you recently posted in that have been extended since you're last activity if you know what I mean, or is that not easily done and/or totally undesirable for most folks?

I've thought this would be a good idea as well.

I can't think of any easy way to do this off of the top of my head.

I could do it, but I don't think that it would perform very well.

I'm not going to try this at this time.

I CAN do it (I just did), but as I think implementing this is a bad idea, I'm not going to code it.

The reason I think this is a bad idea? If you're going to participate in a thread in a forum by posting in it, I would REALLY prefer you're already reading EVERYTHING in that forum, just so we don't have a bunch of threads with people repeating themselves.

Besides, hopefully it's not THAT hard to track threads you've recently posted in. (With your mind, I mean)

I like the new thingy. Any chance we can get a "Mark Forum Read" link on that "Here's every unread post in this forum" page?

I find this way more confusing than my way (which I think is the same way CRZ works). Maybe it's because I'm old and set in my ways, but I like starting in the oldest thread with a new post and working up to the top. And we used to walk to school in the snow, too. Uphill. Both ways.

I've been trying out this method for the last few days and I really like it. The only thing I could suggest is if the posts could show what number they are in the thread in addition to what post they are in that forum. (i.e. "#17 in this Forum" next to the "#225006whatever". Or is that linked number in the upper left corner the number it is on the entire board?) If I'm going to view the forums this way, it's just a nice little additional reference point.

Why, when I come back to a forum I've "marked read", am I getting the last post from the last time I was in that thread as the first post in the truncated thread? Is this supposed to be happening?

(Not Bob Kohm)

In the context of baseball, the use of drugs hurts only the player. In the context of baseball, the use of alcohol hurts only the player. In the context of baseball, womanizing hurts whom? Maybe the wife of the player? In the context of baseball, felonies are crimes against society, not against baseball. In the context of baseball, gambling is the only crime against baseball.

Gambling, in the context of baseball, is a capital offense and Rose has richly earned-- hell, he agreed to-- his death sentence. Let him hang.

Also: I know I marked this forum read after Schippewreck's post. However, his post is still showing up in black (the color of non-read posts right now) just like Whitebacon's. Anyone else experiencing this?

-Jag

Added: and when I come back to look at my post it's still black, and didn't turn blue.

That's quite awesome.

I have a suggestion, though. Is there any way some of the links on the main board can be accompanied by a tooltip of some sort describing the action the user is taking by clicking the link? An example would be clicking the less-than sign and holding the mouse over means a "Click to mark all posts read" tooltip appears.

Again, thanks.

Yeah, unfortunately we don't have an easy way to tell you how many posts into the thread you are. The number you're seeing is indeed the post number overall. I'm working on finding a way to replicate the thread numbers without destroying the processing time, but it will take me some time and some cleverness. (Maybe tomorrow.)

Yesterday I redid the "mark read" action to use the timestamp of your last post displayed instead of the time you clicked on thte link, in case new posts happened to be posted between the time the page displays and the time you click on the link. There's probably an "equals" that needs to be changed to a "less than" somewhere in the thread code now, or something. Hopefully fixed by the time you read this.

How about this?

In a forum, Random for example, in perens is says how many replies there are in a thread. How about linkifying it so that if you click the (9 new) it will jump you to the first new post in the thread?

I think a few people might like that.

It's like the (9 new) links on the main page, but for the thread.
