Wrestlemania was mentioned on Sportscenter. Should I really give a friggin crap? Half of the "news" on some sites (won't mention any by name, even if one had one bazillion popups, takes an hour to damn load, and takes itself way too seriously) is "It was announced today that Alex Trebek dropped a Hulk Hogan reference in the middle of Double Jeopardy", or some other stupid shit like that.
My point? OK: who needs the constant reassurance as a wrestling fan that "mainstream anyone" knows professional wrestling exists on the planet? Do we really have to parade around and say to anyone who will listen, "Hey! Guess what? WILL SASSO from MAD FRIGGIN' TV was at SKYDOME for WMX8!! WOOOHOOOOOOOO!" Is this kind of shit supposed to validate the fact that it's ok to like wrestling?
Maybe it's just me, but I don't need to know if this facet of sports entertainment is mentioned, referred to, talked about, debated, thought about, masterbated to, masterbated on, criticized, ostracized, patronized, derided, praised, exposed, hated, or insulted by anyone in the world who has had their fifteen plus minutes of fame. This is why wrestling fans have had to put up with David Arquette, Liberace, Lawrence Taylor, Chucky, Robocop, Rodman, Master Pee, Pete Rose, Ben Stiller, Kevin Greene, camera cuts to Joey Shiteater from the Mudville Cowstickers who happens to be in attendance, Jason Hervey.....wait...I think the whole Pete Rose thing is actually kinda funny.
I had to get this off of my chest. I had a really rough weekend.
I think, therefore, I think I am. At least I think.
Well for one, if you don't care about these people attending or participating in a WWF event, you could always just not read about it on the "news" sights. And two, like it or not, people like to know what famous people are doing, if Joe Casualfan sees that his favorite football player, Joey Shiteater from the Mudville Cowstickers is attending RAW, Joe Casualfan could possibly be more inclined to keep watching since his favorite football player is watching. Celeberities are in the spotlight, people like to know what they are doing, and if people like a certain celeb enough, then it's only natural to take interest in something they are doing. Cross-over apeal is very important to the WWF because it brings in new fans.
I like reading the news, since I am a roped-up mark for rasslin. I guess I am just in that uncaring 2% of the population who likes the product and could give a crap if (my personal man) Don Mattingly was in attendance at tonight's RAW or took a crap on the Grand Wizard's gravestone. I agree with what you are saying: crossover/celebrity appeal might drag a few casual retards to the product, totally serving the original purpose. This being said (or typed, rather), my opinion is that on a website obviously catering to the mouth-watering wrestling-starved populace, how many of those people will say "Awesome, Dan Patrick thinks enough of wrestling, which I love, to mention it on the air. I am damn glad to know that he spoke about something of such great interest to me"?
If it was up to me, Seadawg would be doing the dirty work of news-collection 7 days a week, instead of 1, that lazy bastard!
I think, therefore, I think I am. At least I think.
The worst are 1wrestling and the Torch. 1wrestling uses those same bait-and-switch, misleading headlines that your local newscasters use.
The Torch just tacks on a couple of lame-ass "Obscure Wrestling References" to the end of each news report. I make it a habit not to read the last two or three items in their news reports because some of the OWRs are soooo terrible they make me want to sew my eyelids shut.
The worst I've ever seen was something along the lines of:
"I just got back from seeing The Royal Tenenbaums and the director must be a wrestling fan because one of the characters is named Dudley and he wears glasses, and the dog's name is Spark Plugg!"
A while back, some wrestling site that looked like it was run by a 12 year old ("Gee, that narrows it down, Yen." "Quiet you!") reported that LL Cool J has a reference to doing something "like Lex Luger" and another rapper had a line of having a temper "like Rowdy Roddy Piper". How newsworthy!
"Say 'what' again. SAY 'WHAT' AGAIN! I dare you, I double dare you, motherf--ker! Say 'what' one more goddamn time!" -- Samuel L. Jackson, Pulp Fiction (1994)

Aw, you know they'd save that for the pay-per-view.
HELLO KITTY gang terrorizes city, family STICKERED to death!
I am unsure as to whether or not I would want to see Donnie Baseball's excrement. Probably not, for $29.99. Probably not for free, either. I don't even look down in the toilet myself.

RVD could have made ECW if he wasn't chasing the secondary title instead of the TV title and to be fair, the TV title became more important than the World Title.
