From WWW.GAMESPOT.COM

The console, which is expect to carry a suggested retail price of $99, is designed to look like the original 1983 NES controller.

Classic NES series of games, which will retail for $19.99 each, will include GBA versions of the following titles:

Donkey Kong
Pac-Man
The Legend of Zelda
Super Mario Bros.
Excitebike
Ice Climber
Xevious
Bomberman

Is it me or I are they seriously trying to gouge us for cash. All those games can fit on 1 cartridge. That stupid e-reader thing holds Donkey Kong Jr, and stuff on 2-3 little cardborad cards for christ sakes. No reason to release these on seperate catridges. Other companies released game collections at the same price point with more games included(Taito, Midway, Konami).

But you know we still buy them anyway. DAMN YOU NINTENDO and your classics we just can't say no. Well Pac-Man is not needed since I already own the NAMCO collection on GBA already and I think any fan would rather get that NAMCO Pac-Man collection instead for $20 instead of just one game for same price. Correct me if I'm wrong but the NES version of Pac-Man was brought out by TENGEN and it's sucked ass. So techinically this version is NOT the NES game version, but the actual good version NAMCO produced and included on the PAc-Man Collection game.

Lets hope the games that do have multiplayer(Bomberman, SMB) can be linked to other GBA's.

I hope Nintendo or other companies follow the trend, and release classics. But unlike Nintendo charge $20 for 1 almost 20 year old game when they can charge $20 or $30 for several in a collection.

What's up with the official press release on Nintendo's web site :

Nintendo Launches Classic NES Games For GBA SP

Mar 29, 2004

Totally Retro!

The Games are, Like, Way Awesome, and the New Game Boy Advance SP is Bitchin'

Wait 'til you hear! On June 7, Nintendo is going totally retro with a classic collection of eight Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) games for the Game Boy Advance and a tubular new Game Boy Advance SP that looks like an itty bitty NES console. The '80s were, like, a long time ago. But everything from then is way cool again. Back then, games went from blocky bleeps and bloops to sweet side-scrollers like Super Mario Bros. And the most excellent NES saved the day for the video game industry. Bonus!

"I mean, Donkey Kong and Pac-Man? These are, like, the best games ever," says Perrin "Mallrat" Kaplan, Nintendo of America's vice president, marketing and corporate affairs. "And if you aren't just dying to get your hands on the gnarly new Classic NES Limited Edition GBA SP, you're a total dweeb."

OK, so let's break it down: The bodacious new Game Boy Advance SP has the same guts and everything as a regular one, but its casing looks just like the NES. And it's still at an MSRP of $99.99. Be sure to get to the mall, like, really early, because it's a "limited edition."

The Classic NES Series, which you totally have to get, includes all the hottest retro games, each one at an MSRP of $19.99. Check it out:

* Donkey Kong: The best game featuring a plumber rescuing a princess from a big ape pretty much ever.
* Pac-Man: Hel-lo? If you don't know this game then where have you been?
* The Legend of Zelda: Dude! How classic can you get? The righteous Link whips Ganon and saves Zelda. Link rules!
* Super Mario Bros.: There are pipes and coins and these grody goombas and you just stomp away.
* Excitebike: It's a rad motocross racing game that lets you rip around a track and kick up dirt and stuff.
* Ice Climber: Like, duh. You climb the ice and whack monsters.
* Xevious: Go to space and shoot stuff with your wicked spaceship.
* Bomberman: Drop bombs on the baddies.

I mean, I understand they're trying to cash in on the whole retro craze, but ... Well, let's just say I never expected to see the word "bitchin" on Nintendo.Com.

I'd be interested in this if I didn't already have a GBA SP, or, for that matter, an original NES.

Anyone remember the whole issue with Sega getting nailed to the wall for using "bitchin'" in an ad (for Skitchin', of all games)? I think Nintendo blew themselves over the fact that it didn't happen to them. Now look at 'em.

So you can fit multiple games on one cart (Game & Watch Gallery 4, Wario Ware)...

But you're going to charge $20 a pop for those games separately?

Sorry, but at that price, I'll just stick with buying games for my SNES. Heck, the Mario All-Stars game with Mario 1, 2, 3 and the Lost Levels cost me less than $20 on eBay. They think they're gonna get me to pay $20 just for Mario 1? Bitch, what'choo thinkin'?

I'd pay twenty bucks for Pac-Man Vs.... but that's because they took an old classic and did something _new_ and cool with it.

I guess they figured that since Super Mario Advance and Super Mario Advance 4 sold well at $29.99, Ice Climber at $20 is a bargain...

I just don't get Nintendo these days. For instance, they release a Fire Pro Wrestling game for the GBA, but fail to do so for the GameCube. Also, Double Dragon Advance, what looks to be an amalgam of Double Dragon I & II arcade ports, comes out a few months ago, but again, it's not available for their console-based system. I've been trying to justify buying a GameCube for some time, but it cheeses me off that a lot of games that are being released that I'm interested in are on Game Boy Advance.

Why won't I buy a GBA? Look at the price of some of the games, for one thing. Plus (and someone correct me if I'm wrong), if somebody wants to play two players simultaneously, it requires 2 GBA's?! You can't be serious.

And now, they're re-releasing these classic games for $20 bucks a pop. And ANOTHER version of the GBA? No thank you, Nintendo. (Money gouging thugs!)

(Although, to be truthful, buying some of those classic games and a GBA would spare having to reconnect the old NES and going through that ordeal of blowing out the bottoms of the cartridges to get them to work. And let's face it, there was NEVER a good method to guarantee that an NES cart would operate properly the first time it was placed into the NES. Never!)

Well...how else are you going to play a game with two players simulateously on a hand-held system? It'd be pretty hard trying to do it with one GBA.

In regards to something you said earlier in your post, I think the 'Cube can handle a litte bit more than just a port from and eight or sixteen bit game. 20-30 dollars for some of these games are a pretty good price. All of the GBA SP's are a hundred bucks, they're just trying to get people that have been on the fence to buy one. Nothing wrong with that. They're not forcing you to buy the retro-themed SP, it's just a neat incentive.

You could always get the GBA Player, which last time I checked cost around $50, but may have come down since then. This way, you can enjoy those GBA games (and others) on the big screen, and you also have a Gamecube to enjoy some of the more modern games. And since a new GBA already costs as much as a new Gamecube, getting a cube and a player isn't that much more in comparison to getting just a GBA.

My biggest problem with playing two player GBA games isn't getting two GBA's together. Its getting two cartridges. I'd like to try the multiplayer for FFT, for example, but I'm not paying $30 - $35 to do so.

That IS rather lame, especially when you got Midway charging $20 for a set of TWENTY-FOUR games. Midway Arcade Treasures, anyone?

Bah. It was simple. All you had to do was blow hard into the end of the cartridge, tap it on a tabletop a dozen times, slam it into your NES a dozen times, hit power, hit reset, and BAM! Good as new. :)

Or just use the dust sleeves. We never had problems until I bought Final Fantasy used and didn't bother cleaning it first.

Dude, you need to settle down.

Nintendo has NOTHING to do with what games companies design games for, and for what systems they produce them for. I'm sure if whomever made the FirePro game ported over a US version, and certain legal issues were resolved and they gave it to Nintendo for licensing why wouldn't Nintendo release it?

It's up to the game companies to make games for systems not the system manufactures themselves.

Example... Are you pissed at Sony for not making Halo? After Microsoft has it for their system?
Sony, and Microsoft has nothing to do with the HALO game design for what system. Bungie the maker of HALO made the game for X-Box, and then Microsoft made an agreement with Bungie saying "You cant design for any other console" and we will give you this amount of money. And they said OK. Can't blame them fool !

Actually, Bungie was making Halo as an RTS for the Mac, and then Microsoft stepped in and said we want it for the X-Box. At some point, (I'm not sure when), it became an FPS.

Your general point (that the console companies aren't responsible for what games are released for which console) may be true, but if Nintendo REALLY wanted Fire Pro or Double Dragon for the Gamecube, I'm sure there are things they could do to get the ball rolling. Look at the speed with which the GTA Double Pack came out for the X-Box after the exclusivity deal with Sony ended, for example.

Although it should be pointed out that the Gamecube isn't suited to 'remakes' like the GBA is. Given its technical capabilities, when people would hear that there is a Double Dragon for the 'Cube, they'd probably expect some newfangled 3-D experience, and not the extended 2-D version like the GBA got. Even if they released it, they'd have to release it cheaper (because who would pay $50 for something so *primative*?), and I'm sure people would start complaining, "If Nintendo could get a Double Dragon remake released for the Gamecube, why couldn't it be a full 3-D makeover?" Look at how much effort they are putting into remaking MGS: The Twin Snakes, and that game is only six years old.
