I do not like this move at ALL. Replacing one of the all-time tough guys and team leaders in NFL history with a guy that cried because the fans booed him is not a wise decision.

Well at this point its either him or kordell Stewart, so pick your poison.

Take it easy, guys. Nobody's replacing Favre until Favre decides to hang 'em up, and I figure that's 2 more years off. The braintrust at 1265 Lombardi Ave. is probably just looking for a stopgap measure at QB for a year or two after Brett's retirement (at which point the whole state goes on suicide watch) until Craig Nall is ready.
Star wipe, and...we're out. Thrillin' ain't easy.

EDIT - DOB=10/10/69 -- so 34 is correct. It all comes up because Brett has stated (honestly) that he doesn't know how much longer he wants to play. The doom-and-gloomers interpret that to mean he'll be gone at any minute. Others of us think he'll still play 3-4 years because he has so much fun doing it, he's healthy, and the team doesn't suck. If any of those three points change, all bets would be off IMO.
ON TOPIC - I'd take Couch as a back up. However, as Mike and Mike said this morning, Couch is arguably better than the starter for a quarter of the teams, so who knows if he'd want to come in as a backup, or whether or not we could get him without trading, which is what the Browns are hoping for.

Brett loves to play with the media and it is apparent every year when he teases retiring and everybody buys into his spiel. I am sure he plans on playing for 4 or 5 more years but likes the attention when training camp opens.
That said, it would be a good idea for Green Bay to bring someone in now and carry the clipboard watching Brett prepare and play the game. Couch, if he is willing to sit, would benefit greatly from having a mentor like Brett. He has a ton of talent but probably had a difficult time handling his role as the first draft pick of the Browns.
Are you a professional halfwit or talented amateur?
Couch is better than a quarter of the leagues QBS? Which ones would those be? Jeff Blake, The guy in Baltimore, Quincy Carter, drew breese..... Thats about the only ones I would take couch over, and Quincy showed some flashes of aptitude last year. FFS, Couch wasnt even best on his team, and now isnt the SECOND best on his team.

Salary decisions have something to do with whether or not he's the best or second best on his own team.
I think their list resembled this:
He's better than the QB for: San Francisco (Rattay), Arizona (Blake/McCown), Dallas (Carter), Miami (Fielder/Feeley), Baltimore (Boller/Banks), Pittsburgh (Maddox), San Diego (Brees)
A case could be made for him over: Chicago (Grossman), Tampa Bay (Johnson), Oakland (Gannon). These are based on last year's performance of declining veterans and an unproven rookie.
Blake(was one), McCown, Brees, Carter, Kordell(was one), Grossman(is one), Rattay, and Boller. I personally like him better than Plummer, Fiedler, Holcomb, and Brunell. Don't forget, he was beaten up pretty badly those first couple of years in Cleveland, and was just getting a chance to show what he could do with an actual team, and spending time in the same offense for a couple of seasons.
//edit Sec19Row53 beat me too it, but I'd probably take him over both Brad Johnson and Rich Gannon at this point in their careers as well.

In the context of baseball, the use of drugs hurts only the player. In the context of baseball, the use of alcohol hurts only the player. In the context of baseball, womanizing hurts whom? Maybe the wife of the player? In the context of baseball, felonies are crimes against society, not against baseball. In the context of baseball, gambling is the only crime against baseball.
Gambling, in the context of baseball, is a capital offense and Rose has richly earned-- hell, he agreed to-- his death sentence. Let him hang.

I'd say everyone on that list but Brunell. Mark's a player, who's just been stuck on some awful teams his last few years, where his running back could and would go down in a moment's notice, where his best OL-man was given away in the Expansion draft, and a MASSIVE coaching style change before last year, with a draft that said that they didn't want you to finish your career there. I think he'll do real well in Washington, even though I think Old Man Gibbs is a fool for having him and Ramsey on the team when they have so many other depth questions.
Well I have a pretty big Rumor. Green Bay is looking to trade their 2004 12st and 2nd round picks and 2005 1st round pick plus Marques Anderson for Washington's 2004 5th overall pick. Who would they draft. Ben Roethlisberger U of Miami of Ohio. Rumor has it Favres thumb hasn't healed well, and he has little to no movement in the joint, and he and some of the coaches had a talk. Thats why we are seeing Green Bay looking at so many QB's this off season. Believe me I want to see Favre play as long as possible but we better be prepared for when he leaves.

Hmmm...interesting rumor. Always a skeptic, I'd like to see a source (Thrill, do you hear anything around GB?). I thought the Couch move was interesting but not surprising as they do need to look for a "franchise QB" to replace Favre--maybe not now (depending on the rumor), but I have always hoped they would get someone in to groom behind Favre to get tutelage underneath him. If Couch can handle being the backup for awhile, he'd have a great opportunity to step up. Thrill, you mentioned Nall, who I saw play in NFL Europe and was impressed...do you think he's the guy they are looking to to be the future? And maybe Couch is just another 'tweener to have a decent backup while Favre is still playing? That is assuming they keep Nall.

In the age of free agency, can you even "groom" a guy anymore? I mean it seems like the last few Great QBs to leave the league (Marino, Elway, Young) the so called QB of the Future didn't work out. Almost alway a free agent is brought in after the heir apparent falls on his face. I just don't see Couch as the QB of the Pack five years from now.

Favre has little to no movement in the last joint of his right thumb. From a football perspective, it's no big deal. Picture holding a football -- how much movement do you need in that joint? Post football life, yes, that could suck.
Why mortgage that much future when you still have Favre? You need to put better players around him, not try to build for the future? Haven't heard anything about that trade rumor -- can't imagine it happening. Can you say Dan Devine or Herschel Walker?
