How's it going everyone?

I am a little confused on HHH as of late, and I am wondering what all of the other wieners will think.

I remember watching a WWE program a while ago (the name escapes me at the moment, maybe it was Confidential), anyway, I was watching and they were showing clips of when HHH drugged Steph and they wed at the little chapel in Vegas. HHH had some good lines...

HHH: Hmmm...ahh! Cheap Weddings? Hey That's us!

Along with this quote, HHH did this vignette very well and it was overall funny to watch, in my view.

The question is...where is this HHH, the entertaining one?

Forget all of the politics and all the rumors that get thrown around on here, HHH is a solid character, but I really think he has done as much as he can in his career.

He's been champion numerous times already, and I have always believed that if a champion is given the title too many times too quickly (such as in the cases of Rock, Brock, and Lesnar) what is left for the guy to do?

Although he did not receive the title for the first time until around 99, he has been a consistent champ since then (i.e. dropping the title, winning it back shortly)

What does everyone think HHH has to do to get back to being a dynamic figure. Should he take time off and repackage himself...not a different gimmick, but just a different frame of mind. Or what should he do?

Thanks and sorry it took a while to get to the point, I've had this idea for a while, but never had the chance to fully post.

If you disagree...you're wrong.

He's still around occasionally.

I think all of that fell away when the WWE made the decision to jump on his bandwagon and make him the main star of the TV. Up until he beat Vince and got with Stephanie (and through, to a certain extent his feud with Foley), Hunter could be "the funny guy" because he was coming from DX, and felt the kind of liberty to be a "cool heel". However, when he became the focal point of the company, he no longer (or more appropriately, I guess, he FELT that he no longer) had that liberty, because he wanted to give the appearence of being completely and totally dedicated to his sport and to the title. Really it was a gimmick thing more than anything else.

Maybe I should put something clever down here....

He's going to be taking time off after Backlash to film a movie, so that'll give him some time off... I think one of the big things with Triple H is overexposure. He's been involved with the main event scene for over 2 years now, and has basically been the same New Generation Flair character since late 2000. He's been wrestling through a ton of injuries, and has just recently gotten back to the point where he's been having consistently good matches. I think that a HHH face turn would be a good move, but they'd have to do it a helluva lot better than the early-2002 face turn that tanked. He's certainly capable of being entertaining, but he's being booked as the monster "I AM THE GAME" heel right now, not as someone who incorporates humor into their routine much.

I don't think we really need the "cool heel" joke-cracking HHH back. That character, the DX HHH, was a mid-card character. I think he's fine the way he is. A little humor here and there, but not overkill. A main event heel needs to have some seriousness to him.

Yeah. It's hard to be the most hated heel in the company when you've got the audience laughing with you.

Hunter still has the ability to do comedy. I've seen him do stuff at live shows after the camera stopped rolling that had the audience rolling. I still get a chuckle at the memory of him, Rock, Booker, Goldust, the Unamericans and Vince McMahon trying to get the Undertaker to do a Spinaroonie on the Raw before Summerslam 2002. "We've had ten years of Dead Man Walking! I want to see just one night of Dead Man Spinning!" I was in TEARS from laughing so hard.

I vaguely remember an interview Foley did where he complained how WWE hired a bunch of soap opera writers and the humor has been gone from Raw. Maybe they need some comedy writers to flesh out things. But from what I have seen from HHH (kayfebe interviews) he seems to be a genuinely funny guy. The period of WWE(F) I love the most is from when HHH first became champ up until the 2 Man Power Trip and the InVasion. But especially the McMahon-Hemsley Era (Error™ Foley) That is my personal "golden age". But of course he isn't the wise cracking leader of DX anymore.

If he wants to be Flair2 then he needs to be more cocky and cheat more! All the wins he rack up because he is just that damn good kinda kills his heat in a way. The virtues strength of integrity should only be done by the good guys. And I won't blame HHH or his wife but someone in booking seems to think that if HHH cheats to win too much it will make him look weak. His character is too serious and grumpy. I think if HHH is having fun it will show though his character. Probably the injuries, the travel, married life is getting to him, I don't know. I still consider myself a HHH mark.

Eh, he was just never that funny to me. He's that guy in high school who would punch the funny-lookin' kid with type 2 diabetes and everyone would laugh. Like those dX skits where he'd do his best Hindu-accent as soon as he'd see any middle-eastern person. Yes, there are people who find that funny, but it just seems so juvenile and dumb. That never appealed to me. He really does seem like an asshole, and that always comes through in his sense of humor. That's why he's always been so successful as a heel, he's easy to dislike. If he plays into goofy humor of 15-year-olds he'll start getting pops and then he'll turn face and when that fails, he'll blame Maven again. I think they keep "funny" Hunter on the shelf to erode any likability from him altogether.

I agree that it's best for Triple H not to bring the funny most of the time, 'cuz he's the most hated heel in WWE and it's hard to hate a guy who's funny. But I do think he has to mix it up a bit to keep it interesting, instead of doing the same old “See this title? It represents your greatest dreams and ambitions, and this is as close as you're gonna get to the title, because I have beaten everybody there is to beat and I'm the greatest wrestler alive today and you'll never be good enough to beat me” promo that he's been doing the past two years.

He's not quite as good a wrestler as he was five years ago-- and you'll never believe this, but I loved Triple H in 1999-2000-- but it's clear he can still bring it, promo-wise. A good example of this was the promo he cut on the RAW immediately following WrestleMania XX. Hell-- he was more interesting before he even opened his mouth for that promo than he has been in a long time. He was fuming, and it was awesome to see. The promo was just the icing on the cake, it was brilliant. He did more to put over Benoit in those two days than he'd done to put over any non-Clique member in the previous year.

I think Triple H is far more interesting, character-wise, when he doesn't win all the time. When he loses, he's extremely pissed, of course, but he also shows that almost-concealed vulnerability. Chris Benoit's statement that he'll beat Triple H night after night, year after year and make him tap and tap and tap was sold very well by Triple H-- Triple H immediately denied that Benoit could do that to him, but you could see the uncertainty in his eyes that says, “Maybe that's possible.” I love that.

The $100,000 bounty angle with Goldberg, while lifted from Harley Race's NWA feud with Ric Flair, again showed Triple H's sense of vulnerability. Trips had lost to Goldberg, gotten his ass kicked as a matter of fact, and Helmsley seemed to believe that he couldn't beat Goldberg without help. So he laid the bounty down. I like angles like this that show uncertainty and, dare I say it, fear behind HHH's motivations.

Anyway, dominant Triple H-- bad. Not-quite-so-dominant Triple H-- extremely well-done. But he should keep the humor at home, unless it's the dry, sarcastic rejoinder.

That's so true. That's pretty much for any character. What's interesting for a character (babyface or heel) is how they deal with adversity. LIke you said it adds vulnerability and therefore some depth. Maybe now they'll play up every Evolution has a title except HHH. That could be kind of interesting if HHH starts being envious and bitter towards his own teammates... I do not want him to go back to DX HHH, he's evolved(pardon the pun) too much to go backwards with grade school taunts and slang. But a tweaking of his current character couldn't hurt though.

HHH character would be alot more interesting if his opponents had just a bit of spine to them. HHH doing is HHH schtick but what really annoys me is when his opponents agree and go on about how "HHH is truly the best in the business, and he's proven that he is, and it's an honor just to be in the same ring as him and hopefully they the stars can allying themselves in the sky and they might beat him etc etc "... That's one reason I was interested in him going to SD, I think a punk youngster like Cena would have some interesting verbal exchanges with Mr. Professional HHH. Eddie would also have some good responds to HHH chatter. Of course in both cases WWE can't sissify the babyfaces.

I think, due to the less-than-average writing that's happened in the WWE for the last 3 or so years, HHH is, believe it or not, just another guy who doesn't come across as entertaining unless somehow he throws in a little quote or does a little gesture to avoid being status quo. I know I'm going to get different arguments that others more entertaining, but let's face it: Guys like Chris Jericho, Kurt Angle, The Rock, John Cena, and others with a certain height of charisma too become dull if they stick to the status quo too much. That's what I love about the Rock: Every promo, he alters something or does something different to keep himself fresh. Heck, people right now are even saying Cena's starting to get stale and dull.

I agree with Matt: Triple H, like anyone else, is still entertaining on occasion. Heck, I don't know about you guys, but the spit take upon getting drafted by Smackdown drew a laugh from me! I think it depends on what the writers write, and if the workers can get into the situation at all. Of course, not everything the writers bring up is going to be incredibly interesting (especially these past few years), so I've accepted the fact that any given worker is not going to be into his/her storyline all that much (The Rock possibly being the lone exception).

Hopefully there will be fallout from the entire RAW roster cheering and giving the "Na Na Na Na" serenade when they thought he'd be leaving.

It's too bad there isn't a "Respected Veteran" spokesperson character on RAW, who could step up for a miniprogram with Hunter before he goes at it with Edge. Still, there is definitely a direction that the E can take it, which is a good thing.

Other than a one-liner here and there I never found Hunter all that funny. Katie Vick anyone? Not only that I've heard middle schoolers with better cock, ass and boob humor. If anything he needs a flunky to play off of, until then leave the humor to someone else.

Well, I have to point out that I've been into this guy for over five years now (which in wrestling terms is ten years). I've seen a lot from him demanding to be taken more seriously around Summerslam '99 until now. My deal is, yes, he was a god among men in late '99-quad injury. As you already know, I LOVED the Foley angle. The thing with Steph I had no trouble with at first, because at the time, she was way more down to earth at the start than she would be about six months later when Daddy came back and she turned into a crybaby.

Anyway, I have to agree that I've only seen bits of the old HHH once in a while. I believe that it's the restrictiveness of the scripts and booking that has caused him to be somewhat stale. Politics? Maybe that too, I don't know. All I know is that I cracked up at the sheriff promo big time. His promos and match with Benoit and HBK were really good.

Of course, I can't lie and say it's been all good with Hunter, lord knows I wish that Katie Vick thing was just some sick dream I had after eating too much. I don't know how I survived that to be honest with you. But, even that repulsion wasn't enough to make me regret the fun I had with this guy. I never gotten into a wrestler this hard before, and I've been watching for sixteen years!

Anyway, kidding aside, I hope this spaghetti western thing works out for him. But, if it's all the same to you, I got my money's worth when he tore off two shirts on Monday! :-)

That sort of thing annoys the heck out of me. It destroys any semblance of character balance. When a wrestler is apparently regarded as residing on a different plane of existence from every other guy on the roster (Undertaker excepted, natch--hey, he's DEAD or something) then there cannot be any suspense or excitement in his matches, because he becomes some sort of undefeatable demigod and every outcome is preordained. There's no credit in keeping a title when every opponent disses himself from the get-go and makes verbal obeisance to the champ instead of, like, *challenging* him or something.

However, it almost looks as if someone has realized this, because HHH is starting to show just a few chinks in his armor, not to mention losing the title at long, long last. Eddy, IMO, has been well booked in that sense--he keeps defending that title, and every match has been a nail-biter because it was entirely possible he would lose. That's good. I hope they keep it up for a while. I liked HHH very much three years ago, and I wouldn't mind at all if he got some of that old spark back, especially since he is liable to be in the title picture for the foreseeable future.

Yeah, that could scaffold HHH's character for a while and let everything simmer and build up quite nicely.

This is the way I see it happening, though.

RAW will start with HHH coming "back" to RAW (like he ever really left), probably with Bischoff at his side, and he'll cut a promo about how RAW is his show, his yard, whatever. How he's the most "dominant" force on RAW, because he is the best, and he is just that damn good, yadada yadada.

BUT... remember after Edge speared Bischoff on Monday, he started telling the crowd, "This is MY show!" Well, that will be angle to get him in HHH's face. Edge will come out and spear HHH (and Bischoff again as well). It's pretty much a just-add-water feud. But there you have it.

Oh, there could be some variations on the formula. And hope there will be. But I think that will be the basic premise. The upside is it might keep Hunter away from Benoit for a while.

I don't think the HHH/Edge feud should start up yet, at least not in full force. I think they should play off the negative feeling of basically all of the RAW guys which were shown when HHH was announced as going to Smackdown. Maybe start up a mini-feud with Edge now by doing something along the lines of what Stilton suggested. Then, at Backlash, have a competitive match between the two, HHH gets the upperhand due to Evolution's interference, but then Edge has backup come out, and they take out Evolution and cause HHH to do an injury angle, so he can go off to Hollywood for a while. When he comes back, the issue with Edge hasn't been resolved yet, but HHH also has issues with a) any of Edge's 'backup' guys and b) Evolution for not being able to save him from being injured. After that is all taken care of, the REAL feud with Edge could begin, and it will be that much better because it will have had the slow build.

But yeah, this will only really work if HHH is able to keep on doing what he's been doing for the past few weeks and that is show some vulnerablility and realize that in order to keep on being fresh he needs to reinvent himself at every opportunity.
