HARTFORD, Conn. -- A Massachusetts-based real estate developer has submitted a bid to move the Montreal Expos to Connecticut, but Major League Baseball is not giving the plan much consideration.

John Alevizos of Wellesley, Mass., who helped Toronto land an expansion franchise in the mid-1970s, has organized a group of investors who want to buy the Expos and relocate the club to Connecticut.

Alevizos was quoted as saying in Wednesday's editions of The Middletown Press that his group offered more than the $125 million the other 29 teams paid for the Expos three years ago. Alevizos told the newspaper his group is looking at several locations around the state to build a 34,000-seat ballpark.

The proposal was given to Chicago White Sox owner Jerry Reinsdorf, a member of the relocation committee. But it has not yet been forwarded to Bob DuPuy, baseball's chief operating officer, or to officials in the commissioner's office, baseball spokesman Rich Levin said Wednesday.

"My optimism has no bounds," Alevizos told The Hartford Courant.

The Expos also are being sought by Las Vegas; Monterrey, Mexico; Norfolk, Va.; Northern Virginia; Portland, Ore.; San Juan, Puerto Rico; and Washington, D.C. Baseball hopes to make a decision by the All-Star break in July.

Currently, the only major league team in the state in any sport is the Connecticut Sun of the WNBA, but there are three Double-A Eastern League baseball teams and several independent minor league teams in Connecticut.

Alevizos told the Courant, for Tuesday's editions, that private funding would provide for a 34,000-seat stadium that because of its relatively small size would drive up demand for season tickets. The Hartford area is where fervent interest in the Yankees and Red Sox collides, but as a National League team, the transplants -- who would be known as the Connecticut Colonials -- would not be able to draw on that interest to any great extent.

The Courant reports that the real estate firm of Colliers, Dow & Condon, which is helping Alevizos, claims that the four sites being considered do not infringe on the territory of other major league teams.

"I think Connecticut is the perfect location," said Alevizos, a Red Sox vice president in 1969-74 and former Boston University business administration professor. "If [baseball] does their homework, they'll agree."

Bids of various degrees of seriousness also have been launched from Washington, Northern Virginia, Portland, Ore., Las Vegas and New Jersey.

Connecticut first had major league baseball in 1872 when Mansfield of Middletown joined baseball's first major league, the National Association, for part of the league's second season. The team disbanded in August. Hartford joined the league in 1874 and New Haven was in for one season, 1875.

The National Association evolved into the National League in 1876 and that was the last season that Connecticut had a major league baseball team. The next year, the Hartford Dark Blues moved to Brooklyn.

Information from The Associated Press was used in this report.

I always thought that Portland would be the smart spot to put the Expos, but that was before I even considered the very state where I've been setting up shop. I think a baseball team would do quite well for itself here and it could easily compete in the midmarket level of San Diego, Clevland and St Louis type teams. The major hang-up is still going to be getting it by the Yanks and the Sox. Even though they are American League teams, out of state ones at that, they'll still put up a fight.

I can't see it happening. First, they would be the 4th team between the New York and Boston markets (counting the NL Mets), and they would have difficulty getting TV (true FSNE would be available, but they probably would get blocked out of the Boston market, thus making them less desirable). Plus, I don't see the burning desire for the NL Team in New England. The market is made up of Red Sox fans who die with the team, and Yankee fans who torture Red Sox fans. That's alot of generational loyalty to try to override. Now, if they adopt Brass Bonanza as the team's song, perhaps I could be swayed the other way.

I've never understood the logic of tossing another team into this market, especially NY (which Connecticut might as well be an extension of). You've already got two teams with a lot of entrenched loyalty, and also the Mets.

There must be somewhere without baseball that would support the Expos, and at the same time truly expand the fanbase for MLB.

Maybe they figure every game would be on ESPN. Can anyone say Hartford Whalers.

Speaking of Brass Bonanza...

You can get it from this site, along with other old Hartford Whaler sounds.

Yankees/Red Sox can be the AL, Mets/Connetispos for the NL.

I still think that MLB is dragging their heels on the Montreal move until they can get a deal worked out with Washington.

I hope, I hope, I hope the Expos come to Portland. But... it's wishful thinking, hearing what plans they've pitched to pay for the stadium, and getting a feel for what goes on up there well I don't see it happen.

Still only a hour and a half drive to see baseball! Dammit I want!

Though to get the people to bite would be a community owned team, but that wont happen. Amazing what Green Bay has done to scare the Holy Bajeezus out of almost every sports team owner in several leagues.

Alas it is not meant to be. (Baseball in Portland, and community owned teams.)

Vegas would be a good spot for them, and Washington is a no go because Baltimore will balk hard on that eventuality. And West Virginia? You can't really be serious. The same thought applies to Conn. and like everyone else said the other teams will say no.

But here's to wishful thinking, and hopefully they can save the team with a move to Portland or Vegas (Now I wonder what they'd change the name of the team to for Vegas... better be damn skippy "The Gamblers" will be excluded. Though to hear the Kenny Rogers song in a ball game, being chanted by the fans would make me laugh until I lost all bladder control.)

lol, the expos to Connecticut? Ya right, even though lago here has lost faith, I still think that the Expos are coming to Portland. Because, we need another team to cheer for. And baseball has always been a big part of Portland, even though all we have to had to cheer about when it comes to Baseball is that the Beavers FINALLY won a home game lol. Anyway, I hope the MLB has some compassion on a sport thirsty city and sends to team on over to P-Town so we can see some dudes wack a chunk of a cows ass with a stump.

The only town I'd like to see the Expo's go to more than D.C. is my own, but that will never happen.

lol, the last thing that California needs is ANOTHER TEAM. They have at least 2 teams in every sport, no one feels sorry for you.

Try three. (Football- Chargers, 49ers, Raiders. Baseball- Giants, Dodgers, A's, Angels, Padres. Hockey- Ducks, Sharks, Kings. Basketball-Warriors, Clippers, Lakers, Kings.)

//edit: I'm not looking for sympathy, I just think it would be cool for a major league team to relocate to my hometown. Our AAA team the Grizzlies (SF Giants play in a park that rivals many major league teams in terms of aesthetics. However, I'm not holding my breath on Fresno getting a team ever. This town sucks when it comes to supporting what it has, plus the weather is oppressive in the summer. We're like top three in the country when it comes to air quality. Think LA, but without the coastal breeze every now and then. And hotter. Being in a valley, we get a lot of the smog from SF and Oakland up north. Sucks to be us.

Baseball doesn't need another small market team. Move them to a media center with some population. Nothing against Portland. I have visited and it's a nice place but not a major league town.

Actually, what baseball really needs is to drop back down to 24 teams so that less Double and Triple A caliber pitchers are filling up the back end of rotations/bullpens.

I agree with you the way things are now but I would rather see our youth gain renewed interest in the game. Baseball should work to connect with the kids and increase participation. With the U.S, Latin America and Asia there are plenty of major league players out there. Increase our kids interest and combine it with the rest of the potential markets and contraction wouldn't be needed.

I think there are enough position players out there when you go through Latin America, North American and Asia, but I still think there is only X amount of QUALITY pitching that has to fill X + 3 spots on each roster. Because of that you have inferior pitching plus teams rushing borderline-quality pitchers to the Big Leagues (Tigers of last season is best example), thus pitchers that could succeed end up getting shell-shocked. If they wanted to keep the 3 division/1 wild card in each league format, they could still go with 3 four team divisions in each league, or they could just revert back to 2 six team divisions, no wild card (they wouldn't blow that money though.)
As for investing additional money, it at least appears that most organizations are starting to invest in Latin America, and some teams are trying to rebuild baseball in urban regions of the U.S.
