Question strictly out of curiosity and me not knowing the answer: given your job, are you even allowed to make federal candidate contributions?
Don't know about Grimis but as a state employee, I can give money to anyone but it is preferred that I not really endorse anyone and can say nothing regarding university issues. Lobbying is verboten.

ALSO as a state employee I can say that roughly the same rules apply. And in all fairness within a week two separate people were asked to remove the "For President" signs in my building...one was for Bush, one was for Kerry.
But I have no lean on me to make a federal contribution either. It's also worth noting that in the mail the other day I got a suck-up form letter from the DNC that looked a lot like the one my alma matter sends every 6 months. Well, except for the Prez-bashing. Otherwise it was asking how much I was willing to contribute. Just like FIU would.

I can give money to federal candidates, as I do state and local candidates. But the federal candidates I support(Bush, EJ Pipkin, etc) can raise plenty of money on their own. I'd rather support my friends and colleagues locally, where my money can have a greater impact.

Gotcha. I felt the same way when I got the aforementioned DNC letter.
I too only give to local candidates, with the exception being my former Senator Russ Feingold. I'm a City employee, and it's technically OK. This being New York, however, visibly supporting non-incumbents (meaning Democrats for State Senate, GOP for State Assembly, or not the current Municipal Officials) is generally not too great for your career.
I wonder how much money George W. Bush gave Paris Hilton.

Wait, the Democratic fundraising letters are in crayon? (I taught there for a year in a Gordon Rule class. I'm allowed to insult the students intelligence. "Europe is a new country." "World War I led to the formation of the National League." Dear God.).
Why is TVLand stealing my ideas from DEAN's Workrate Report's? They had to be stealing, as I thought I had the only demented mind that could put Bea Arthur and Abe Vigoda in a sex scene.

That's what you get for teaching at a commuter college. By the way and for the record, I didn't take my history credits at FIU. :D
Cool...other than a couple of bones thrown to General Clark, my magical duplex land is Bush Country.

Along those lines, I know that New Jersey is a state that favors Democrats. When I used this page though for two different zip codes in South Jersey, the Bush contributions easily dwarved all the other candidates.
I did love though that the lowest figure was some dude from Mount Holly, NJ giving Dennis Kucinich five dollars.
It's weird how the voting patterns and the giving patterns fon't always add up. Look at Oklahoma and New Hampshire, both pretty solid GOP states, but which seems to give money mostly to the Dems. Or Oregon, Michigan, and Wisconsin - all swing states that give overwhelmingly to the GOP.

What I found interesting while looking over my community was the number of housewives or "homemakers" who donated 2,000 (the max) to the Bush Campaign. Hmmmmmmm.

Pretty interesting... I'm about a half-hour south of Green Bay and, with only one exception, my li'l community is apparently very Democratic, with most of the donations going to Gephardt and Dean.
As a side note, Bush is going to be speaking just a mile away from my apartment on Tuesday... between the motorcade, the looky-loos, and the protesters, my commute is gonna be hell.
