Meltzer is reporting today that Stephanie is not going to be the Smackdown GM tonight, which I think begs the question...who gets the spot?
Shane?
Austin?
Foley?
Teddy Long?
My choice for the role would be William Regal. For my money he was not only the most entertaining commissioner character they've had to date, but he also seemed like a very natural fit for the role. His personality made sense as an authority figure, much more so than, say, Steve Austin. Apparently he's relatively healthy again and itching to get back into the picture. He's always been a fave of mine, and I think this would be a great way to get him back on TV.
Then again, they could go all 'inside joke' on us and make HHH the GM. Maybe not.
Other possibilities?

Regal would be cool but I can't see it happening. Same for Teddy Long. Foley HAS to finish his feud with Orton on a high and Austin would be a bad choice.
Even though I don't like it the new SmackDown GM will be Stephanie McMahon.

I want to beleive that it will be someone, anyone other than Stephanie (especially Regal now that you mention it), but all previous experience really says Stephanie will be the new GM. I guess we'll all find out tonight when the spoilers are posted. As they say, wish for the best, but expect the worst.
Wasn't it just earlier this week or last week that people were worried about Angle's injuries and saying he should take it slow and take some kind of non-wrestling role? he could become GM and not have to wrestle for a while but still get to get plenty of tv time. He could also continue a feud with Eddie by putting him through hell. It could be just a temporary position until the WWE feels Angle is alright to wrestle full time again, then they can hand the job off to whoever else.
I think it'll end up being Long for now, because otherwise his move to SD is pretty damn pointless. Regal maybe, but I haven't heard of any news lately about him being healthy enough for a return to TV, even for just an on-screen role. My original pick would have been Stephanie, but the rumors sites have been backing off of that... plus in storyline terms, Vince just was beating the holy hell out of her 6 months ago. Hell, it could end up being Russo for all I know. Or maybe one of the HoF inductees... hmmmmm.

I think he is dead.
My choice would be Bobby Heenan.
Admit it, there is no better choice.
I think at this point, Cornette would be a better choice than Heenan. First, there is Bobby's health, so I doubt he could handle the weekly strain. Second, there is a 15 year plus kayfabe/shoot hatred between Cornette and Heyman they could play up. Plus, it could lead to a Confidential where they replay the infamous phone to the skull when the Original Midnight Express arrived in the NWA in '88 and Cornette's subsequent blading.
(edited by redsoxnation on 23.3.04 1856) Why is TVLand stealing my ideas from DEAN's Workrate Report's? They had to be stealing, as I thought I had the only demented mind that could put Bea Arthur and Abe Vigoda in a sex scene.
Angle's not a bad choice, either. I was thinking they could do an angle where Eddie has to defend the championship every week until the next Smackdown PPV. You could have Eddie and the announcers play up how exhausted Eddie is from all his matches, while Kurt's just been sitting around resting up. Have the story at the PPV be that Eddie's got nothing left in his tank, and Kurt just beats him clean. Then you can have Eddie chase the belt.
Well, it BETTER not be Stephanie now, as I've gotten my hopes up.
If it indeed is not her, then I have no idea who'd fill the spot. Teddy Long would be great, although I'm not sure how long the act could last. Shane or Vince (or Linda, especially) would just be a cruel joke. I think Austin should stick with RAW. Foley is gonna' stick with RAW, as he has another month to feud with Randy Orton.
As far as out-there picks go, Jim Cornette would be AWESOME. However, I seriously don't see that happening. Ditto, Bobby Heenan.
The answer to WWE's financial problems...
Never 'Wiener of the Day', and is actually quite bitter about it.
I do think the Foley as GM thing is still a possibilty. If they acquire him as GM, he could than go out and trade John Cena for Randy Orton, swapping titles and bringing Orton in to continue the feud... now with the upper hand that he has the power. Although this is unlikely because it looks as if WWE has set up Evolution for Orton to take the reigns for good.
I love the idea of Cornette, but I also don't believe that would happen. Cornette has friends and a home here in Louisville, works hard on OVW all week (including the houseshows over the weekend many times), and I seem to recall him saying that he would sooner shoot himself than go back to that type of lifestyle (at least for now).
Also, it would be jumping from OVW to Smackdown and there's been no indication on the OVW show that Cornette would be going anywhere soon.
Mind you, they certainly do spend a bit of time with him on the new MONDAY NIGHT WAR DVD, including showing him in the ads. That would be a good tie-in there.
I'll say this, if it DID turn out to be Cornette tonight, I'll certainly be attending the OVW television taping tomorrow!
But I think the next great choice would be Angle. He needs to clean up the company anyway, so what better way to do it? And with Austin bouncing back and forth between the shows, we would hopefully get some great skits with the two that we've seen in the past.

Was about to post this exactly. Cornette is great, no doubt about it. His mind is one of the best in wrestling, his on air skits are oozing with charisma and brilliance.
But nobody knows who he is, nobody remembers him aside from us hardcore fans, or at least some what passionate fans.
A friend of mine mentioned it could be Vince, so Vince would run one show, Bischoff would run another, and (presumably) Heyman would run another.....just like the good ol' days.
Me? I'd like to see Cornette (the guy is a genius) or even Teddy Long. But since my predictions are never right......I will say the team of Kang and Kodos will run Smackdown.
Well, if Meltzer is correct, and the new Smackdown GM isn't Stephanie, then I personally would hope to see Jesse Ventura fill the role. After all, he's not scheduled to be doing anything until 2008.
It's gotta be Long. Why else would that have put him, of all people, as a lottery pick last night? But then again, I'm still asking that question about Tajiri and Spike.

'92 still sticks out as the best, mainly cause it was the first one I saw on PPV live. Flair's win meant my friend Rick died his hair blond. I still hate '94...with the lame Hart/Luger tie. Q:
