I had to reboot my computer a couple of times, (it's four years old.) When I got back on, NONE of my bookmarks remained. I ran Ad-Aware, and found something nasty (I suppose I could dig it up if it might be important.) Ad-Aware removed it, but, the bookmarks are still gone. Am I in store for massive password changing, or what?

Windows 98. To my knowledge, I don't have seperate user accounts set up on this machine.
Edit: I also can't add anything to the links toolbar.

Ad-Aware found something called Wild-Tangent. The lack of bookmarks and links is the only thing I've noticed different. The lack of my links bar is particulary annoying. I checked in the password manager, and everything is still there.

When you say you had to reboot your computer a couple of times, what exactly do you meeeeean ? Did you manage a complete, graceful shutdown of the OS, or was there button-pushing &/or power-cycling involved? (My first thought is that some of the open Mozilla files didn't get shut properly & are corrupted.) If that were the case, wouldn't a full "scandisk" be the thing to do next?
If it were me, I'd also do a "find" through your system looking for a file that contains something that you know was in your bookmarks file. (This will take a while to run, depending on the amount of stuff on your hard drive.) There may be a backup or otherwise renamed version of the file floating around, that may give you a hint about what happened.

I had to power it down hardway, because this graybeard froze up on me. This is not an uncommon thing though, which is why I'm perplexed. I've had to do that so often that's it's not even a mild frustration anymore. I am very relieved to hear that I don't have something more serious. I suppose I could always import them over from IE if need be, I haven't changed much since then. I will try the scandisk right now. I am teh suck when it comes to this stuff, which is why I turn here.

Ha! My Win95 laptop from 1997 scoffs at your machine's claims to antiquity! :-)
Based on my brief & unpleasant experiences with Win98, I'd personally be swearing at that rather than the trusty old hardware. (I had to hard reboot that thing more often than any other system I've ever been on!) But, if you've put up with it this long, we'll assume that it is what it is.
I've got FireFox rather than 1.6 here in front of me. In FireFox it looks like the personal toolbar stuff is in the same file as the bookmarks; assuming that 1.6 is the same, it's consistent that you'd lose both of those together if the bookmark file is trashed. The file is named bookmarks.html & tucked away under a totally obscure directory.
Thanks to emma pointing me in the right direction, I was able to find the bookmark file, and successfully restored my old settings.
