Saw this piece of information on ESPN Insider in regards to the Magic and them bing able to trade Tracy McGrady. Here's some of the more important parts---

Lakers:
The Lakers could offer Kobe Bryant in a sign-and-trade. Shaq loves T-Mac, and Bryant, if acquitted, is probably as close to equal value as the Magic could get for McGrady. However, Bryant would have to agree to the trade, and given the Magic's problems ... why would he?

Celtics:
The Celtics might be willing to part with Paul Pierce and a couple of first-round picks. Pierce may be a notch below McGrady, but he's locked into a long-term deal and sounds like he's looking for a new home.

Grizzlies:
The Grizzlies might have the goods to get it done. They're one of the deepest teams in the league and a team searching for a superstar to complement their plethora of role players. If the Grizzlies offered Pau Gasol, Shane Battier, Earl Watson and either James Posey or Bonzi Wells, the Magic essentially would be getting four-for-one and nabbing a young 7-footer with star potential in Gasol. Would McGrady sign on long-term in a place like Memphis? With best friend Mike Miller now locked into a long-term contract there, you bet he would. The Grizzlies still would be deep; the team still would have an impressive power forward with upside in Stromile Swift, a solid starting point guard in Jason Williams, and two serviceable big men in Lorenzen Wright and Jake Tsakalidis.

Bulls:
The Bulls could offer Eddy Curry, Jamal Crawford (sign-and-trade), their first rounder (right now slated to be No. 1 overall) and one contract like Jerome Williams' for filler. While the Magic wouldn't be getting the star power some other deals might bring, the chance to have two of the top picks in the draft, plus a promising center and big point guard in Curry and Crawford could be tempting -- especially if the Magic could turn around and trade Howard and/or Gooden for a young dynamic two guard.

Sixers:
An Allen Iverson for McGrady swap only happens if the Magic get very, very desperate at the end. Iverson has the ability to sell out the arena and has more heart than McGrady, but he brings so much baggage I can't see the Magic pulling the trigger.

T-Mac to Lakers for Kobe:

That's quite possible. Kobe's unhappy in L.A., and T-Mac's unhappy in Orlando. In L.A., T-Mac wouldn't have to carry the entire team on his shoulders constantly. But with Shaq's recurring injuries, Payton's unhappiness and Malone's uncertain status, T-Mac might very well have to carry the Lakers in many situations.

And since Kobe's a free-agent, he'd have to agree to the trade. That, for me, is the dealbreaker, and why this trade won't happen. Never in a million years would Kobe want to go to Orlando, where they've thoroughly managed to screw themselves. It'd be kind of funny to see Kobe playing for Shaq's old team, but I give this trade proposal a 2 out of 5 on the likeliness scale.

T-Mac to Celtics for Pierce and two first-rounders:

What?!? McGrady's better than Pierce, but he's not so far ahead of Pierce that the Celtics would give him up and two first-round picks. Especially not with GM Danny Ainge's declaration that he wants the Celtics to miss the playoffs so that they can rebuild through the draft.

With the first-round picks attached, I say the likeliness of this trade is 0 out of 5. Without the first-rounders, maybe a little more likely. Ainge has let everyone else go, why not Pierce? 3 out of 5 for a straight-up McGrady-for-Pierce trade.

T-Mac to Grizzlies for Gasol, Battier, Watson and let's say Bonzi Wells:

Never in a million years! Gasol's only a few years away from being a legitimate MVP candidate. Battier's a great young player, and Bonzi's done very well since being acquired from Portland. And he's managed to shed that bad boy image, too.

I'm sure T-Mac would love to go to Memphis, and they'd love to have him, but in this situation they're simply giving up too much in my opinion. 1 out of 5.

T-Mac to Bulls for Curry, Crawford, first-rounder and let's say Jerome Williams:

This actually seems the most likely. Orlando needs promising young players, and Eddy Curry has been disappointing thus far in Chicago. Crawford's been good, but I think he needs a change of venue too. I'm not sure the Bulls would give up a potential #1 overall pick, and this trade certainly wouldn't solve all the Bulls' problems, but it'd put 'em over the Raptors and within striking distance of the Cavaliers for third place in the new five-team Central Division. And that just might be enough to make the playoffs. 4 out of 5.

T-Mac to 76ers for Iverson:

Man, I don't know. Iverson's slowing down, and getting injured more often. He does play with more heart, as ESPN said, but I think A.I.'s best days are rapidly ending, while McGrady hasn't yet reached his prime. So I'm gonna take the opposite track from the others and say the Magic wouldn't wanna make the trade... but the Magic don't know what the hell they're doing half the time and might want to just get the best value possible. 2 out of 5.

I'd like to respectfully disagree. I think if the Magic called Jerry West and offered him this trade he would take it so fast the Magic's heads would spin. The Grizz are 11-deep with no true superstar, and while I agree about Gasol, McGrady is one of the three BEST players in the NBA NOW. And with T-Mac playing small forward for 40 minute a night they wouldn't really need Bonzi or Battier off the bench. I'd guess the Grizz starting five after the deal would be Williams (PG), Miller (SG), McGrady (SF), Outlaw (PF), and Wright (C). With Watson, Posey, and Swift coming off the bench that would be a tough team to deal with.

WHen i read the title of this thread before even reading it I was thinking that the team needs to be a team that is deep and needs a superstar so sure enough the first team I thought of was Memphis. But that trade seems like a lot. I know McGrady is one of the top 5 players in the league and Orlando has to get something for him but giving up Gasol AND three other players seems steep. I think first I would try and make a deal for 3 or 4 players without giving up Gasol, if that doesn't work give up Gasol but only package him with one other player. If they don't go for that then I say forget McGrady.

Keep in mind the cap numbers have to work out as well. That would explain the need for a 4-for-1 swap, whereas in the Boston scenario both Pierce and McGrady are max salary guys.

I tried Pierce for McGrady straight up on realgm and it was declined.

Checking the Hoopshype salary pages for both Boston and Orlando, Pierce makes about $2M less per year than T-Mac does. This is greater than the 15% + $100,000 limit that the CBA requires for trades to happen.

I know they are both max salary players but from what I remember, Pierce's deal started the year the cap went down, which would explain the difference in salaries.

Personally, I think you should watch for a 3-way deal involving Orlando, Lakers, and either Memphis or Chicago. T-Mac goes to LA, Kobe goes to either Chicago or Memphis (and is reunited with Jerry West), and Orlando gets Gasol/Battier plus cap filler and/or picks from Memphis. If the 3rd team is Chicago then Orlando gets Curry/Crawford plus cap filler and/or picks.

EDIT: Here are possible scenario's with LA and Orlando plus either Chicago or Memphis.

T-Mac won't be traded. Not too many players can score 62 in a game. Not many can shoot 7/8 from 3-point. T-Mac is one of the best, if not the best player in the league. Only Garnett is up to par with T-Mac. Magic's won't trade T-Mac. But T-Mac does need to improve his D.

Oooh, lemme try some of these T-Mac scenarios with RealGM:

T-Mac to Grizzlies for Pau Gasol, Earl Watson, Bonzi Wells and Shane Battier:

The trade was accepted, salary-cap wise, but statistically, it's a disaster for the Grizzlies. Memphis loses 16.5 points, 11.8 rebounds and 5.2 assists per game.

T-Mac to 76ers for Iverson:

The trade was accepted, and Orlando loses only 1.8 points and 2.4 rebounds per game while gaining 1.3 assists per game and more importantly, an experienced guy who's been to the NBA Finals. But I stand by my opinion that the Magic wouldn't want to trade McGrady for Iverson, because Iverson's getting past his prime and is spending a lot of time on the IL. Plus the fact that he's a head case, which for some reason I forgot to mention the first time. Besides, if Iverson's bitchin' about being stuck on the going-nowhere Sixers, does anyone think he'll be happier with the Magic, the worst team in the NBA?

If your asking do they want to? Heck no, but do they have to? I would say so. Because unless they just want to use him 'til the last year of his contract and get nothing out of him when he decides to become a free agent THEY BETTER TRADE HIM. Because this guy could easily get you 2 good players and maybe even a draft pick. Is he worth that? Duh. If they are smart enough to look ahead and trade him before the deadline year of his contract, then I think he will end up going to the Phoenix Suns, because if I were him I would be fed up with the Eastern Conference.

If the Blazers don't make the playoffs I will be the sadest one of them all for the next 21 years.

Yeah, 'cuz the Phoenix Suns are in a much better situation than the Orlando Magic... wait, sorry, I'm wrong. Actually the Suns are dead-last in a division also featuring the freakin' Clippers and Warriors. The Suns have fallen below the Clippers, for the love of everything holy.

Remarkably, the Suns are still five games better than the Orlando Magic, but the difference between a potential 22-game winner and a potential 27-game winner isn't all that much. Worse, the Suns, being in the Western Conference, have to conceivably win many more games than an Eastern Conference team would in order to make the playoffs.

Even if the Magic were to stand pat this year (and I'd be surprised if they do, but of course Grant Hill's contract situation makes it difficult for them to do anything under the cap), the Magic would still have a relatively good shot at winning the Southeast Division in 2004-05 and thus making the playoffs. The Magic will share a division with the Atlanta Hawks, Charlotte Bobcats, Miami Heat and Washington Wizards-- and only one of those teams is in any danger of making the playoffs this year.

The Suns, meanwhile, have very little chance of finishing better than third in next year's Pacific Division with the Lakers, Kings, Clippers and Warriors. Even with T-Mac, I wouldn't see the Suns with a better record than either the Lakers or the Kings, unless L.A. has a dramatic shakeup this offseason.

I dunno. I think the “Man, I'm getting pissed, and I'm going to the Western Conference” thing is starting to reverse. Because only one team can win the Western Conference title every year, and that team is usually the Lakers or the Spurs, with the Kings, Timberwolves and Mavericks having an outside shot. Other than that, fuhgettaboutit.

Meanwhile, the Eastern Conference predictions are a crapshoot every year, although my Pacers and the Nets and Pistons are starting to show signs of true league-wide dominance. Who wouldn't want to go to an Eastern Conference team? Put a guy like KG on any Eastern Conference team (except maybe the Bulls) and instantly they become a favorite to win the East. So I think as players start to realize how difficult the Western Conference has become, they'll start to make Eastern exoduses to see if they can lead a team deep into the playoffs. And eventually, the league will be back in balance.

But that's just my take.

Umm hello, the Magic are dead-last in the LEAGUE, there is a big difference. T-Mac has already discussed his displeasure of this year, and has said that he is not happy about the situation (referring to the fact that if he dosen't do go, he dosen't do good). I gurantee you he will not end up on the Magic after his contract expires. But of course there still is a chance that he will still be on an Eastern Conference team. Maybe the Pistons lol, they need some offense =)

You're saying there's a big difference between the Suns' and Magic's records, but I'm looking at the Magic (19-55) and the Suns (25-48) and thinking something different. Sure, the Suns have six more wins than the Magic, but they were still the first Western Conference team eliminated from playoff contention. And they'll need a lot more than six wins to catch up to the rest of the pack. That's what I'm saying.

I do agree with you, though, that they need to trade him, because unless they improve in a hurry (or Hill retires, for the love of God, and gives his team some salary-cap space), I don't see T-Mac sticking with the Magic through the rest of his contract either. I just don't think McGrady will be any happier with the Suns than he is with the Magic.

I wonder what Minnesota's salary-cap situation is... boy, that would be sick, if the Timberwolves got him. As if they're not about to win the Midwest Division over the defending NBA Champions anyway.
