If they spent more time creating interesting ideas and chacters then they would not need a draft.

Here are the reasons I didn't like the announcement last night
1) It came out of nowhere, with the storyline that Vince doesn't like what the GMs are doing. (Wasn't that also the case with bringing back Stone Cold, but he needed board approval to keep him away?)
2) It killed the rest of the show for me. If they would have had the announcement at the end of the show (or the end of SD or heck the beginning of next week's show) Mucho better. What's the point of watching the "throwaway" main event. The whole purpose of it was to watch the friction between Benoit and HBK, and you know what? Next week there's a good chance it won't matter.
3) Not only that but now I'm really not that interested in watching next week. If the majority of the show is going to be the draft/lottery... Not a lot of fun.
4) Need more definition of what the rules of this are.

There's definitely a part of me that wants to see different matchups, but I don't want everything to change (See Christian vs. Jericho, Johnny Blaze/Spade w/ Bischoff), nor is this the way I want either Eddy's or Chris's first run at the top to end. Guess we'll have to wait and see what hapens next week.

As for doing this every year. That could be cool, if they make it dependent on the GMs. Have the GM whose team wins at Survivor Series get to make the first choice (or whose man wins the Royal Rumble). Have the draft before WM. Protect the champs. Have the changes take affect after WM (that way you can end any fueds you need to). Allow certain people free agency protection. :)

I must stress that it's a LOTTERY, not a draft, the difference being that in a draft, picks are made, but in a lottery, it's all luck. I think every wrestler picks either a RAW or Smackdown marker, or something like that. Therefore, the random drawing could be really cool...

I'll give the WWE the benefit of the doubt. I like the draft idea right now for the reasons in my first post in this thread. But also, WWE has done a good job with stories and booking lately. No reason to think that they this isn't just an extension of this revamping of the quality of the business. I like the idea. I just hope they can pull it off correctly.

Maybe this is not what you are getting at, but I don't think there's anyway that the draw will be "random".

I like it. And I think the timing coupled with the way Vince stormed out made it seem like something a "real life" company might do...thereby making it easier for the suspension of belief.

I'll definitely watch RAW next week and I can see myself becoming a devoted fan again because the show will be interesting again for a while.

With a smaller roster, caused by brand extension, there are only so many feuds a guy can go through. And now that HHH has gone through Booker T, RVD, Kane, Benoit, HBK...and he's just an example...he needs some new blood to scrap with.

And, on a strictly fantastical side note, I think a Cena-Orton feud could put BOTH guys over and make something big happen, much like the old Rock-Austin feuds.

At least some day maybe I'll understand why some day maybe you never can. Or something like that.

I think the only way this makes me happy is if they move HHH to SD! for a while. Since my DirecTV doesn't get local channels, and I'm too cheap to shell out for cable too...I could go without seeing him a while...

I like the idea of the lottery and shaking things up a little. I agree with some of the thoughts here that it won't be a huge change but something enough to even out the rosters. It hopefully will be a nice opportunity for new fueds and new faces getting a chance. As for the belts, the current champs could stay where they are until they lose, then move on to whatever brand they were slated for.

A friend of mine, Aron, noticed this at WWE.com and its gotten me scared. I think the terror warnings (board's and NHS's) might need to be elevated!

So, next week, there will be a lottery to form new rosters for both the RAW and SmackDown! programs, and nobody is exempt from being sent from one side to the other. Partnerships may be split, factions could be divided, and Superstars who are currently Champions could very well be in a position where they will have to drop their Championship. As Mr. McMahon said, even members of his own family are not exempt from this lottery! So what does all of this mean? Less than 24 hours after winning the World Heavyweight Championship at WrestleMania, will Chris Benoit be sent back to SmackDown!? In that case, who will be the World Heavyweight Champion?

No wonder Trips tapped out! He's going to be getting the belt back by the two sweetest words in the American-English language - DE-FAULT!

I just hope they get Flair away from Triple H. Flair is mega-over with the fans & I for one get tired of having to hear him fawn over Triple H. Hook him up with someone else he can give a rub to.

From the way it sounds, the belts are staying on their current shows (for example, no IC title on Smackdown)... So at least we may be getting a couple of cool tournaments out of this whole lottery/draft thing ...

Well, now that HHH is selling an arm injury, doesn't he need to take time off to do a movie or something? Here's how they could do it. In the lottery on Monday, HHH is picked to move to Smackdown! He could refuse then Vince or someone else could pull out the "YOU'RE FIRED!" clause b/c of that. Or they could just give him the usual, "indefinite suspension."

(this ended up being a lot longer than I thought it would, so I apologize)

I think the telltale sign of all of this was the crowd reaction. Vince waited for his music to start, then took the requiste massive dump in his drawers (the only way someone can actually walk down the ramp the way he does) and comes out vaguely babyface.. "We're going to give you what you want.. New Supserstars, new rivalries, a new WWE!" Solid pops from the crowd. So how is he going to do it? "A lottery! No one's safe! Not even my family!"

Mixture of groans, murmurs, and boos.

So essentially, we're going to shake things up.. How? In the LAMEST way you could possibly imagine.

Now, I'm not saying this move (assuming it happens the way he said it would) is not going to be worthwhile in the long term. But as far as short term goes, it is just what I said it was. The lamest way to achieve a roster shake-up imaginable.

Certainly some people need a new start.. Why not just allow more flexibility for the wrestlers (characters) to jump ships? StaggerLee commented that a lot of us complain that some people need a new start and should switch shows, so why are we complaining when they try to do it? Well, because it's LAME. McMahon ex machina. And NOT everyone needs a new start. They have done a decent job of building up some nice rivalries that shouldn't necessarily be made for naught just for the sake of unburying a handful of other guys. And sure they will just rig the lottery so the rivalries they WANT to keep will stay intact but that doesn't really help in establishing an illusion of reality.

If they wanted to shake things up, AND have McMahon make a big announcement to hype the shake-up, here's what I would have done.. First let the ladies finish their match. Why bother having them go through the motions of the match if they're just going to be rendered irrelevant by a McMahon interruption. The interruption of the match told us "These girls are nothing but eye candy and their match is irrelevant." I have no real problem with them being nothing more than eye candy but it's not like we needed Vince to interrupt their match to make that point. If they were trying to establish them as viable in-ring talents then let them finish their match. Either let them finish or don't have a match at all.

At any rate, McMahon comes out. Instead of announcing a lottery to reshuffle the entire rosters, he announces that all current non-titleholders are officially free agents. Or he announces that the Smackdown! roster will be present next week for a major announcement. And he announces next week that non-titleholders are officially free agents. Said wrestlers are officially allowed, make appearances at the events for either brands for a period of... one month. Or 6 weeks maybe. By the end of that period of time, every wrestler must officially sign with a particular show and stay there.

Doing it that way accomplishes many things:

1.) No mixup of where the titles stand. Titleholders are the figureheads of their respective shows and should stay where they are. Both in terms of storyline and in terms of, why would a titleholder want to leave the show he/she is successful on.

2.) Achives the desired roster shakeup. Obviously with their lottery idea they have plans for new feuds. The honchos can easily manipulate the talent in this "free agent" scenario to acheive the matchups they want. Particular tag teams, and talent currently involved in interesting feuds, though, could stay where they are for an actual REASON other than the so called "luck" of this "random" "lottery."

3.) A solid story arc to involve many of the "buried" talents. The lottery idea (the way they allege it will work) will last exactly one week. The names are picked, the rosters are set, and that's that. With this, you have the potential for several weeks-long stories to emerge. Who will end up where? Will RVD make a suprise appearance on Smackdown? From show-to-show people will wonder, who's going to show up and make waves? Not only that but your buried talents can also be showcased on two shows. The potential for double the exposure could give guys a make-or-break push. Granted not EVERY guy would be showing up at two shows a week. Maybe one week he shows on Raw, the next he's on Smackdown.. etc. The possible stories you could generate from it are virtually endless. AND you're doing it in a much mroe natural manner, allowing it to develop over time instead of an instantaneous "well let's switch it up!" lottery.

Someone below mentioned they should do this lottery after EVERY Wrestlemania. Geez. DIdn't you see the last 30 minutes of RAW on Monday? Crowd was dead. Everything was irrelevant. The Main event HAD to be as good as it was to get any reaction from the crowd because it was all made irrelevant aftewards. That's essentially what would happen to the weeks leading up to Wreslemania. MAYBE the championship bouts wouldn't be harmed but every other side-rivalry would be rendered irrelevant. I think if they did the free agency thing each motnh after Wrestlemania...THAT would be an interesting idea because there's still a realistic question to be asked. It's not "will this (obviously fixed) lottery allow this feud to continue?" It's "Will this WRESTLER stay with this brand and continue the feud?" Not only that, you could have a heel wrestler leave and the face follow him, or vice versa. Like I said, the possibilities are endless.

I also think next Monday WWE will unveil a new logo. I heard the old scratch logo is gone since it represents the "attitude era" too much. I would also like it if RAW and Smackdown got new sets, since both will need new entrance videos (all new wrestlers on the shows).

Also when Vince said "not even my relatives will be spared", I think he was talking about his son-in-law Triple H.

"WHAT ABOUT THE TAG TEAMS" "WHAT ABOUT THE CHAMPIONS" Well, its simple, you say, with the exception of the Tag Champs, every other Tag Team is open to a split. The only one I can think of that really NEEDS to be together are the Dudleys. (With perhaps the APA if Simmons isnt retiring). Then you can say that if RVD or Booker's name is pulled, then they go, AS A TEAM to whatever show pulled thier name.As far as Champions go, same for them, leave them up for pulling. Nobody ever calls the US Title the SMACKDOWN US Title. Put Cena on Monday nights with the strap.

If EVERY SINGLE WRESTLER is available for the lottery, then of course that means that SMACKDOWN and RAW arent going to be the same old show, so RVD moves to Smackdown isnt a big deal, its just that he gets a fresh start with a supposed fresh set of opponents, or at least a 50% of the roster fresh start.

And, finally this will hopefully mean that we will get JR and TAZZ on the same broadcast team and Cole and JR on the other.

When I mentioned the champions staying out of the lottery, I was mainly talking about the respective World Champions. At this point they could flush the tag division. Now, if they want to rig the lottery, put Guerrero and Benoit on the same show and have them do a unification match at Backlash with the winner becoming the 'touring' world champion while the individual shows have their own champs: I-C/US, that's fine with me. But, if they decide to move the Eddy title to RAW and the Benoit title to SD, it makes no sense. Either unify the belts or leave the belts, anything else and confusion occurs.

"And NOT everyone needs a new start."

Exactly-who says everyone's going to have a fresh start? Who knows how many or how few people will switch shows? With your idea, there would be no logic in somebody like van Dam or Booker NOT showing up on SmackDown to try and improve their careers, so if they didn't, it'd be like "huh? Why aren't they even trying to jump ship?" With the lottery, it's a case of the boss' say-so.

"First let the ladies finish their match. Why bother having them go through the motions of the match if they're just going to be rendered irrelevant by a McMahon interruption. The interruption of the match told us "These girls are nothing but eye candy and their match is irrelevant." "

I'm kinda stretching here, but maybe that was the point. Maybe Vince was saying "this here new WWE....none of this "eye candy pretending to be wrestlers" crap."

"At any rate, McMahon comes out. By the end of that period of time, every wrestler must officially sign with a particular show and stay there."

But then you're just destabilizing the brand split for six weeks instead of doing it all in one night. For the first coupla shows it'd be "OH MY GOD! RVD'S ON SMACKDOWN!" But by the fifth week, when Hurricane and Rosey are popping in for a quick tag match, it'd be "ehhh, who cares?". This is a way of changing talent that nobody might care about under individual circumstances.

"Someone below mentioned they should do this lottery after EVERY Wrestlemania. Geez. DIdn't you see the last 30 minutes of RAW on Monday? Crowd was dead. Everything was irrelevant. The Main event HAD to be as good as it was to get any reaction from the crowd because it was all made irrelevant aftewards. Not only that, you could have a heel wrestler leave and the face follow him, or vice versa. Like I said, the possibilities are endless."

Well, it would work after every WrestleMania, simply because people would want to see those feuds resolved. The crowd were out of it last night-I would assume-because they'd a)Just had a big announcement, and b)The following on Raw was probably going to have nothing to do with said announcement. Besides, saying that mania would be meaningless because some might switch brands two weeks later is like saying Benoit winning the title was meaningless because "he'll just lose it some day". If it were held every year-not for the whole roster, but say six names are drawn at "random" to switch shows-it could even add tension to the Mania matches. Will Jericho get his revenge before potentially being switched? Will Eddie win the WWE Title back before possibly having to head to Raw and start back at the bottom of the ladder?

I do like the idea of a trade window, however, just not as extended as yours. A month's free agency for everyone could work-but only if once they show up on the rival show, that means they've jumped. I don't like the idea of having, say, Christian flit between shows for three or four weeks before deciding to stay put after all. It just doesn't work.
