Watching the Ten best matches show on Spike got me to thinking: there's all kinds of moves, holds, and spots that used to be staples of a WWF match that you rarely see anymore.

The one that stood out for me was seeing Randy Savage with his arms trapped between overlapping ropes in a match against Steamboat. The old "tied-up" in the ropes manoeuvre. They used to do that all the time, and now I can't remember the last time I saw anyone use it.

And speaking of Savage: has anyone used the flying elbow since him?

Also, I believe the simple head-butt has been in decline for a good decade or so.

And where have the nelsons gone? Full- and half- ?

Can anyone think of other wrestling moves that no one uses much anymore? Any you’d like to see make a come back?

So sayeth Randy Stilton, the real Stinky Cheese Man!

HBK uses the flying elbow on a semiregular basis.

The head butt is usually used by bigger guys. I know it's a staple in Rikishi's arsenal.

Bob Holly also uses the Full Nelson quite a bit.

Yeah, I miss the old "tied up in the ropes" move, though.

It is interesting that the flying elbow is not a finisher anymore, as HBK does it as a transition move. Meanwhile, Chris Benoit had been using a flying headbutt as a finisher until the neck injury.

Speaking of moves not used much, it seems that the only time that a catapult is used is when the match involves the Clique. Seriously, you only really see Triple H, Shawn Michaels and maybe Billy Gunn getting hit with this maneuver. Other than that, the move is all but gone.

Oh yes, of course HBK uses the flying elbow sometimes. It's not a move I identify with him, though, or at least not in the same way I identify it with the Macho Man.

I usually go to the bathroom when Bob Holly is wrestling, so I might have missed him busting out the full nelson.

Bob Holly was using the Full Nelson (at least he was trying to) when he was trying to put over the story about wanting to break Brock Lesnar's neck. He just never seemed to be able to lock his fingers because Brock is so big.

A move that nobody uses that is there for the taking is the old Tully Blanchard Slingshot Suplex.

I'd mark out like a five-year-old if I saw somebody bust that out today. Or even a variation of it. Slingshot Jackhammer, anyone?

I believe Ultimo Dragon used it on Tajiri just tonight.

Test used the flying elbow as his finisher, and now he still uses it sometimes. Headbutts are used by every samoan and by Big Show.

I guess the move which they used most in the past, and today not anymore, must be the Atomic Drop. When I recently watched some old 1990 tapes, there were Atomic Drops in every match. Today only Shawn Michaels uses them.
And who is using armbars nowadays? Piledrivers? Kneedrops?

When was the last time a sleeper hold ever put anyone to....ummm..."sleep"?
The effect of the hold now is to elicit spontaneous recovery when the hold-ee is 3/4 under.

The ten-punch countalong seems to be in decline, as does the test of strength.

This will get added at the end of each post you make, below an horizontal line. This should preferably be kept to a small enough size.

I haven't seen anyone using the Eddie Gilbert's Hot Shot/Austin's Stun Gun in a long time. It's probably for the best since you see guys dropped onto the top rope in a few other variations fairly often now.

As for the armbar, Nunzio has it as a staple in his matches these days.
