Who's gonna get this game for the PS2 or PC?

I was considering in getting it, but I think it sucks that you gotta pay a monthly fee.

No way. FF or not, it's just another Everquest experience treadmill. I'll probably wind up getting the hard drive, especially if GTA:San Andreas winds up requiring it, but if I'm gonna pay a monthly fee to play a game it'd better give me a lot more over Everquest and its ilk than the ability to ride a chocobo.

Tried it, got bored with it, got really pissed off at Square-Enix's bastardly policies and deleted it without a second thought.

You can't even pick the server you're on? That's insane. I have been a big fan of both FF and EQ, so this seems like the perfect game, but jeez... sounds like they really nickel and dime you on a bunch of those options.

Is the gameplay any fun, Carl? I would've posted this on the other thread, had it not closed. I'm guessing from your review that it's similar to EQ.

That's pretty accurate. If you like the EQ-style treadmill gameplay, then this should suit you.

Essentially, starting the game means you go out the front gate of your town, search for random monsters that /con at an acceptable risk level, run up to them, hit your attack/magic/whatever button and wait. When you've earned enough money, go back to your town, go to the Auction House, buy some armor or a weapon or whatever else you happen to want, hop back on the combat wagon.

The big gimmick is sub-jobbing. When you hit level 18 (which takes...awhile), you get to do a big quest that lets you train yourself in a second job. The problem of course being that it's restricted to 50% ability, you must earn the extra EXP to train it, all your armor/weapon restrictions are judged by your primary class, etc. etc. etc.

The best example is one of the later quests. A friend of mine played it through level 20, and thus encountered the feared and revered Chocobo Quest. Throughout the game, you're treated to the rather tantalizing sight of players and NPCs alike riding chocobos. This is admittedly a cool thing. To ride one, you must finish the aforementioned quest. This involves finding the Chocobo Stables. Go there, talk to a couple people, you're directed to a sick chocobo. You must attempt to befriend it by offering it Gausbit Greens. It won't take them. Here's where the fun starts: you can log out or go to a different zone if you want, but at the turn of the next in-game day, you MUST be there, right on the dot, to offer the greens again, and once more the third day. On that day, the chocobo will finally accept them, and you will be granted a Chocobo License...which only allows you to purchase chochobo to ride them temporarily, knowing that they do in fact run away instantly as soon as you get off.

That's the theme of FFXI: everything is a treadmill. If you are fan enough of the EQ style that this sounds appealing, then you are a much stronger man than I, and I heartily recommend it.

Guys, all MMORPGs are going to be like EQ for a long time. It is a proven formula, and anything "better" or "more RPG like" is way down the road. I never played Shadowbane, but it wasn't as Revolutionary as it was supposed to be. Star Wars, nope.

It's here to stay. But come on.... IT'S FUN!!

Er... you obviously have a far, far different idea of "fun" than I (and everyone else who thinks that EQ and its clones are tedious wastes of time and money) do.

The problem I've had with their formula is that they charge me, the guy who doesn't have the time for the whole "sit around and find a group because you can't survive without one, walk for thirty minutes, stand in line for the right to kill a monster, kill it over and over until you get the magic toilet of whatever/go up a level, rinse and repeat forever and ever" the same amount of money that they're charging the people who'll sit there and play for eight or ten hours every day. Considering that the game's designed to be played like that and rewards you for it, I'm not going to get my money's worth nor am I ever likely to. You pretty much HAVE to devote a shitload of time to them or you'll never get anything close to the full experience. I want a game, not a job that I have to pay for.

Shadowbane failed to be revolutionary because Dark Ages of Camelot had already come out and filled the "completely devoted to PvP" niche. SWG has (re)proven that there're plenty of people who don't necessarily want to play the traditional hack-and-slasher, and I think that there's a large market there waiting to be tapped. Hopefully games like True Fantasy will keep pushing in that direction.

I actually stuck with EQ until I hit level 50. I got in a good guild that was fun and active, but not full of curmudgeonly players. It certainly took forever to hit 50 and that involved hours and hours of grinding, as you all have alluded to.

But after I hit 50, it seemed like I had hit a ceiling. There simply wasn't much to do, aside from getting a group together to go to Isle of Dread and grind for "uber" gear, while fighting with other players over stupid arguments about who stole someone else's mob. But then, the only goal was to get better gear, presumably for bragging rights and to distribut to the rest of the guild.

After that, the frontiers update came out, but by that time, my interest was pretty much gone.

FF seems like it will have the same sort of stuff, but it looks like they've tried to freshen it up with more quests and games and what-not.

I like the idea of the games, because they provide good escapism, but they soon become black holes of time. Yeah, the gameplay does get incredibly repetitive and there's no real payoff.

I feel like there's a better game out there somewhere. From what you guys have said, the EQ model looks like the dominant one, at least for MMORGPs, but is there anything better? For consoles, I mean.

Y'know something brothers...

Whether the EQ model is the best or not, I really don't have any interest in playing MMORPGs at this time. And I'm not even talking about the repetition.

I don't like the idea of paying a monthly charge to play a game that I already own. I also don't like not being able to not play for awhile without completely screwing myself. I mean, if I play a regular video game and get bored with it after awhile, I have the security of knowing I can simply save my game and play another game for awhile. When I come back, the first game will be the same as how I left it.

If you do the same kinda thing in an MMORPG, your group will probably have moved on, or at the very least there'd be questions like “Where the hell have you been?”

So, bottom line for me-- the monthly fee and the committment necessary to play MMORPGs are compelling reasons why I won't play them.

NATE THE SNAKE, I never meant that EQ was worth playing. It certainly isn't. But it does distract you and sucks your money. It is successful. For some reason, you keep going and going. It can be fun at times. There is some gratification in getting a new item, or going on a fun raid.

But yes, most sane people do quit after a while. I don't think I killed a single mob after I hit 46 with my main. I was just totally burnt out after camping the FBSS for straight days and days.

I'm just saying that it is a successful formula and companies aren't going to come out with a "casual" version anytime soon.

Now the thing I like about FFXI is the fact of the classes and the fact you not just one class. You can be a warrior and after awhile you can switch to something else and after lvl 20 I think you get the other classes like Samuri.

I don't like the fact you have to pay for each char you want to pay. This part not a 100% on is the moveing around the place I know you don't have to run everywhere you can get that bird thing. I don't like that I am going to have spend about 200 bucks to play it if I want to do it on my PS2 or 50 on the cpu, but something got to be mess with just to play it.

I had Everquest and it was fun for about a month then I got bored. Now I can't get rid of the damn thing, so it sit there. I didn't like it was the same thing over and over, run here then run there and then run here again. That got real old real fast.

I am going to try City of Heros when it comes out and True Fantasy Online when it comes out.

Coming from the Mud world, I'd have to ask if players have a option to attack (PK) each other in the game? That's what Mud players do when they max their levels/stats. They build castles and have gang wars. Or the other option is to develop the game as a wizard, which I doubt FFXI will touch that.

My other question is how many hours does it take to reach that level 20 on FF XI? How much longer do people last after that? This could be a committment lasting hundreds
of hours?

As for owning multiple characters (i'm assuming there are 10?) ...oo it's not only potentially 200 bucks to play but 200 per month??? ouch!

Each additional character is only an extra $1 per month on top of the $12.95 fee.

PvP is going to be put into the game in time for the PS2 launch, but it won't be 1-on-1 fighting. Instead, PvP will take place in designated areas, and it'll be party vs. party. Moreover, there'll actually be an ingame point to the fighting, as the outcome of these battles has an effect on the conquest struggle going on between the game's three major nations.

It would cost me 200 dollars, because I have to get a network adp. and router for the cablemotiom and then the harddrive is a 100 itself. That why I said 200 hundred sorry for the mix up.
