For some reason, I was listening to Wright All Night on my way to work, and something he threw out there struck me:

He was talking about ESPN's NBA "Power Rankings" and the fact that the top five - FIVE - were all from the Western Conference.

"Are you telling me," he said (paraphrasing), "that a team that's going to LOSE in the FIRST ROUND is BETTER than the Eastern Conference team that makes it to the FINALS?"

Has the East become the "AFC" of the NBA? (Yeah, I know, the AFC isn't the AFC anymore, but that seems to be the apropos analogy) HOW did this happen? WHEN did it happen? Clearly, my Sacramento tunnel vision has kept me from noticing, so I throw it out to those more in tune with the league as a whole than I.

Okay - this is going to be brief since I should be working. But, yeah, for the most part the Eastern Conference stinks. My sorta beloved Knicks torment me every day.

If the playoffs were to begin today (1/7/02), the East would look like this
1) New Jersey - 21-11
2) Boston - 20-12
3) Milwaukee - 18-13
4) Indiana - 20-15
5) Washington - 17-14
6) Toronto - 18-15
7) Detroit - 16-15
8) Orlando - 17-18

The only one of these teams that averages over 100 points a night - Orlando at #8 (in fact Orlando is the only one that does in the entire East). The Top FIVE teams in the West aveage over 100 points.

One team in the West averages less than 90 points a game and that is the cellar dewelling Memphis Grizzles. Four teams in the East do this (including my Knicks and the sometimes Iversonless Sixers)

Three teams in the East have 20 wins. 5 in the West do.

The two teams who have been considered the worst teams this season - Miami and Chicago (combined 14-49) - reside in the East.

Thing of the names that people always talk about as the big names in the NBA - the marketable ones (of course there are a lot more we could debate about).

West
Shaq
Kobe
Webber
Duncan
Garrnet
Malone

East
Jordan
Iverson
Carter
McGrady

But of course - the East has won 8 of the last 11 All-Star games.

Anyway, just a bunch of stuff that sorta shows the West is stronger.

As a lifelong Celtics fan, I have to say that the Celts look pretty good this year and they are as good as any team in the East. Now, having said that, I think they will get their asses handed to them by the West's best teams. See the thrashing handed to them by the Kings a couple of weeks ago.
So, yeah, I think the 5 best teams are in the West, too.

There's something else you have to take into consideration though. The teams in the West are better than the teams in the East. Now i'm not positive about this, but i believe every teams plays the other teams in their conference more than the teams in the other conference.

So the teams in the West are playing other Western teams most of the time, so they are playing better teams and the top teams in the West are STILL winning more games and scoring more points against better teams. So that makes them even FARTHER apart. You see what I'm saying?

If the East played as many games against the West as they do against the Eastern teams, I doubt there would be more than 2 or 3 teams in the East even over .500.

Another consideration to take in is the fact that not only is the East considerably smaller, but they have the majority of the younger players. The east is loaded with 19-20 year old kids who are a good 2 yaers away from being able to make an impact. The Knicks, and teams like them on the other hand, have locked up players who are way past their primes. So the East has this horrible combination of greener than hell guys and old, past their prime guys, not to mention maybe 4 legit star centers/PF's. And by legit, I mean guys who are BIG and can bang a little. The east, on the other hand is loaded with 7 footers who can play, such as Shaq, Dirk, KG, Duncan, etc. Even the older guys such as D. Robinson still have game and would avg about 20 pts per game in the east. The west also landed a lot of guys in their primes or approaching their primes. The reason the East has been so successful in all star games is because their top 10 or 12 guys can match up against the west's but its a sharp decline from there. Just a quick 3am post

My brief take on this:

Yeah, the West is better *now*, but it seems to me that the youngest teams in the NBA are in the East. So when the Pacers, Bulls, etc. grow up a little more and gain more experience, they'll be very difficult to deal with.

Another thing to consider. If even *one* of the West's marquee players (Kobe, Garnett, etc.) were suddenly to move to an Eastern Conference team, the balance of power could shift dramatically.

And that, as they say, is that.

Young teams only become good teams with proper coaching, development, and fan support.

I can point out a great example of a perenially young team gone wrong...

Clippers anyone?

There's a lot of NBA teams out there that are just TO young. It's not very often that a top college player goes the whole 4 years and that just kills the whole learning curve.

Tim Duncan came out as a senior and was pretty well polished, and an instant threat. He was pretty much full grown as well. These kids that come out of high school and out as freshmen might be 7 feet and jump to the moon, but they only weigh a buck-sixtyfive. Not only that, but they really don't know shit about the game. It's costing the NCAA right now and I think it is starting to hurt the NBA as well.

If the NBA is so eager to grab these guys as soon as possible they really ought to have a minor league system where these guys can learn the game. Otherwise a lot of these young guys will end up on bad teams. Going though several different coaches, systems and having the pressure of saving the team on their shoulders. A lot of them just won't reach their full potential under the current system thus hurting the game.

Actually, they do have a "minor league" for the NBA. It is new this year, called the National Basketball Development League (NBDL). It seems like it is mostly for undrafted free agants and guys like that, but it will be interesting to see if any good players come out of there. I would like to see high school players go to college for at least a couple of years. I will definitely miss my boy Frank Williams when he leaves us a year early next year. Speaking of Frankie, did anyone see us destroy Iowa last night? What a great game. Frankie had 2 passes to Brian Cook that were just unbelievable.

Curry's health issues are his heart (the literal, not figurative). That's more serious than pulling a groing or hamstring on a consistent basis. Plus I'd like my starting center to average more than 5 boards a game.
