A few thoughts from under the OU baseball cap (F-U, JR!) on tonight's WrestleMania Flashbacks show...

- I understand the point of a show like that is to draw people in for the nostalgia and then give the hard-sell for the PPV. I don't have a problem with WM ads coming in and out of commercial breaks (in fact, the only one I remember seeing was Hogan-Rock. Way to go on hyping your World Championship match, guys). But Christ on crutches, it seemed like that show had about 35 minutes of show and 25 of regular commercials. Woof.

- Did anybody else nearly fall out of his/her chair when the ending of WM9 was called the "Greatest WrestleMania Finish Ever"??? Somebody at Titan needs to lay off the crack NOW.

- With only an hour to work with and 17 WrestleManias, I understand that you can't show whole matches (especially when you cut your show in half with commercial breaks, see above). Given that, I think they did a pretty good job of putting video packages together for the selected matches. I especially liked the use of the footage in the pre-match hype. Cool stuff.

- They showed the Austin-HBK match (a damn good one, yes) and not the Austin-Hart XIII match (an even better one). Nothing like adding a little harmless fuel to the "HBK is coming back!!!" mantra, eh? Nah...

I did enjoy the show, even if I didn't necessarily agree with what they highlighted. But there's 47 hours or Wrestlemania history out there, and that's hard to sum up in what is essentially an hour long infomercial.

The biggest thing I got from the show was a major reminder that Wrestlemania just aint the same without Gorilla Monsoon and Jesse Ventura in the play-by-play/color positions.

Rest in peace, Gorilla. I miss ya.

a few of my thoughts on the show...

- mostly i want to say that this year the WWF has been doing a tremendous job of promoting the history and legend of the 'Mania franchise, but a piss-poor job of selling the matches for this year's show.

- as much as i can't stand Taker, the vignette on his historic streak was kind of cool to watch, if only to see his evolution. coulda lived without the Giant match clips, but thank god they spared the Bossman hanging.

- it was GREAT to see the Savage-Steamboat 'Mania 3 match, my friends and i used to rent that tape over and over at the local video store simply for that match.

- as a very sad (pathetic) sidenote.. the Hart-HBK Iron Man thing... i have yet to see. it happened during the years i was away from wrestling, and thus far i haven't stumbled across a tape of it anywhere. yeah, yeah... i know

overall i have to say decent job for what little time they had to work with. and that hour alone did more for encouraging me to buy X8 than the past month of RAW and Smackdown. what exactly does that say about the state the fed?

You're not missing much. It's a pretty boring match dominated by rest holds if I remember correctly. I didn't much care for it, but I suppose of awesome psychology and old school wrestling is your cup of tea, then maybe it will do something for you.

I caught bits and pieces of this show on TSN monday night, in between commercials and crappy videos on the Ed The Sock show. What I saw was well presented and a good look back at selected WM moments. But ultimately it didn't look like something that I would shoot myself over missing. It did a good job of hyping the WM legacy though.

They could really have used another hour, but yeah it was cool for the nostalgia. Loved the Dragon/Savage footage. but was Liberace really such a great celeb moment??? I miss Heenan.

I enjoyed the show, but am in total agreement with the amount of commericals. I taped it and watched it later in the night, and it only took me like a half hour to watch. Also, I was left wondering what the show would have been like if the nWo hadn't come back. A lot of Hogan stuff, but I guess that was just to try to sell more PPVs this weekend. But the Yokozuna/Hogan "match" being the best finish ever? And the end to the Sid/Hogan match was in there too? Blasphemy. Warrior beating Hogan should have been in there. I *was* pleasantly surprised to see the Savage/Steamboat stuff, but was confused at the omission of Hart/Austin. Oh well, too much stuff, too little time, I guess.

"I didn't much care for it, but I suppose of awesome psychology and old school wrestling is your cup of tea, then maybe it will do something for you"

Come on! Psychology MAKES the match. Lack of ring psychology is the reason the WWF product is inferior today. Yeah, spotfests are nice once in a while, but when basic logic is sacrificed to that particular altar, the product suffers. So, Stone Cold's been wearing those knee braces for years, yet only one or two guys has thought to attack the legs. Of course it would be nice if he sold a leg injury once in a while (That natural limp from the shitty knees doesn't COUNT!!). I'd bring up the Rock, but that angry bastard (God bless him!) Eric S. has that angle taken care of! So, Triple H is trapped in a car and dropped 40 feet, but is back a few days later with no ill-effects. How about any Hardy Boy match where damage seems to be measured like a video game "life meter" instead of selling injuries (like the back after a missed Swanton Bomb). The Undertaker seems to be the only one not engaging in these incidents of bad psychology. You know... because he's an undead biker who feels no pain and can regenerate tissue at inhuman rates! :-)

Okay, [steps down from the soapbox] aboot the subject at hand. The show was aces with me, simply for the Steamboat/Savage match! Good God, could the man work a match or WHAT!! In my MUH'FUKIN' opinion, he was just as much "Tha MAN" as Ric Flair. I liked the old promo too, it kinda gave that quiet, determined, and barely restrained homicidal rage vibe. Good stuff!

Warrior beating Hogan was in there, complete with Hogan going out of the ring to get the belt, giving Warrior that "Well...ya beat me!" look and the hug.

Barring the inclusion of Hogan over Yokozuna as the top moment/match - which doesn't even make sense with how they're playing it as a low on Raw and SmackDown - I thought this was a really fun show to watch. This was the WWF production team just going to town.

They made Bret/HBK's Iron Man Match at WM12 look fantastic, and the whole package for this segment was just great. The goofy shot of Bret in full Prince-jacket regalia shaking hands with HBK in his stupidest outfits somehow still worked, and using the old "Mighty Ring General Bret Hart" and "Boyhood Dream" Shawn Michaels voiceover was a nice touch. They worked in all the best shots, too, like Bret smirking when he had HBK in the headlock early on, HBK being out of it at 20 minutes, the two of them going all out near the end and the "Bret just needs to not lose" before the 60 minute mark. This was just really cool to see edited together like that.

It had some nice consistency with the later recap of Austin/HBK at WM14, tying together Bret to Michaels to Austin and paying special attention to HBK loading up for the Sweet Chin Music but getting caught to parallel with the end of WM12. All the little things they fit into this one reminded me of how great HBK was at setting the mood and playing his character - the shot they put in of Michaels bouncing around and laughing at Austin to start the match but almost looking like he was going to cry when Austin turns around and flips him off was hilarious. It just kind of reminded me of how much more I liked HBK than HHH in terms of the cocky can't-beat-me heel.

UT's Wrestlemania History piece was also great. Even with a lot of his matches (Giant Gonzalez and Bundy and Snuka) not being much on their own terms, putting them together and using the old Undertaker theme just summed him up. I hope he uses that as his theme again before he retires.

As Mr. Heel said above, it was also a nice reminder of what Ventura used to bring to the table. Hearing him say "This is one of the greatest moments associated with the history of wrestling" in a totally deadpan voice while man's man Liberace was in the ring is still funny. Uecker getting choked by Andre should have been #1, though.

Of course, I'll never get tired of seeing what they can do with highlights of Hogan/Andre and Savage/Steamboat. Seeing the old classic in-front-of-the-blue-screen promos for Savage and Steamboat was cool (Hogan needs to cut one of those on The Rock), and the way they worked in the old footage of Andre calling "Hull Howah" out, with Piper needling Hogan, demanding he give an answer and Hogan finally yelling "YEEEEESSSSSSS!" was fantastic.

Overall, not all of the stuff they showed was great, but the manner in which they showed it was. I was glad they didn't feel the need to tack on the crappy music by some crappy band over the clips and used some of the older music and archived sound. They probably could have done without "ranking" things. My biggest disappointment, though, is that they didn't show the greatest Wrestlemania interview of all time, Hogan at Wrestlemania IV.

I agree that the showing of the old backstage interviews at WM was awesome. I really wish they would go back to stuff like that. It really adds a little last minute sizzle to even the dullest of matches. Who knows if it would work nowadays, though.

Does anyone know if they plan on doing a DVD box set of Wrestlemania? It would be awesome to own some of those older WMs on DVD instead of VHS all in one set. Maybe they're waiting for the 20th anniversy to do that. The only problem, I shudder to think what the price of something like that would be.

One thing I now know for sure:

Vince McMahon has got to be the worst announcer in the history of whatever. I'm now sure that any negative feelings I have for the WWF can be traced back to hearing the sound of his awful voice.
