OK. So the SF Chronicle is saying he was given steroids by his trainer now. So, what does baseball do??

If it is "proven" that he actually took them (which you can't do without a positive test, imho), does baseball strike his records, take back his MVPs, etc? Yeah, the trainer GAVE him steroids, but that doesn't prove that he took them. Yeah, it would seem obvious, but not proven fact.

I mean, would they give the single-season record back to McGwire...who was probably on roids also??

At least some day maybe I'll understand why some day maybe you never can. Or something like that.

Technically, steroids were not illegal in major league baseball until 2003 (despite them just being illegal before that). Thus, Bonds' records were prior to the substances being declared illegal, and thus they won't be touched. Yes, it makes no sense, but, as long as the Major League Baseball Players Association remains in existance, common sense is forbidden.

It's never going to be proven if they took them. I really don't think Bonds, Giambi, Sheffield and others are going to admit to taking steroids, and I don't think that Major League Baseball has vials full of blood from previous seasons, so testing that is out. You'd have to be an idiot to be on steroids now, especially when you have Bonds saying "test me every day". Unless somebody converts a DeLorean into a time machine, we're not going to know if anybody is on steroids until they get really sick and admit the evils of the drugs (a la Lyle Alzado).

Funny, I thought the records of a grand jury were, you know, private. To be honest, baseball didn't give a rat's ass about this until the bad publicity. Jacking it out of the park saved baseball after the strike.

I actually think Ripken breaking Gehrig's record saved baseball after the strike. It totally put the focus back on playing baseball & baseball's history, plus it had one of baseballs best representatives at the center of attention.

Sosa and McGuire saved baseball after the strike. At least thats what the media in St Louis has told me every year since then.

I can only speak for myself but they definitely were what piqued my interest again.

I think the greatest thing to come out of this is that they said that Bill Romonowski was one of the listed steroid receivers. I WOULD HAVE NEVER KNOWN. HE'S SUCH A WELL ADJUSTED CITIZEN. Right.

My favorite comment about Romo comes from Garrison Hearst: "He's nothing but a racist dope pusher".

Actually, being linked with Romanowski is the most damning evidence you could present to the public against Bonds, Giambi, Sheffield etc. We all know Romo is on roids, so the list is believable. Unless of course, it was actually supposed to be his wife on the list instead of him.

What will the consequences be for this?

Assuming the Feds don't have any evidence to indict the players, what will MLB do? I have to imagine everyone's off the juice by now. How long does that stay in your system? And, absent a urine sample from Giambi in 2003 lying around somewhere, does he get away with it? [Assuming he has something to get away with, which we don't know at this point].

Well, they more than likely won't take away any records, I mean Rose is banned and his records are still kept. Baseball has never to my knowledge erased a player's stats...

Even the 1919 Sox Series stats are kept as official, though most of them threw the series...

I don't think what Rose did was as bad as this. He never affected the outcome of any game. He also got his records without cheating. The roid users cheated every other player who was not on the juice.

It would also be fair if they'd expand the investigation beyond the Bay area. I'd take a look at all the other top homerun hitters, especially McGuire.

Mcguire was hitting 500 foot homers as a rookie. His added bulk didnt do ANYTHING to change that, or improve on it. Roids only builds muscle, it doesnt increase reaction time, or give you any ability you didnt have before. It only makes you stronger.

Since after all this time it would be damned near impossible to prove he actually received and took them, probably nothing. However, from the perspective of his legacy, he certainly tarnished it. Blood tests would be better than urine but since Bonds dropped about 20 lbs. last year and Giambi dropped "4 pounds and is eating better" this year, I doubt they could prove anything.

But, being stronger allows you to swing faster, which translates to more power & faster reaction time as a result of the added bat-speed. You may not read the pitch any quicker, but you will get to it faster than you would have without the steroids...

Well it COULD happen, but I doubt it. I think you're right about the East, Washington is about to drop out of sight and then Marlins have been a huge disappointment.
